i know cops have the authority to defect a car based on an observation of unroadworthiness and the right to report you to the EPA based on an observation of the car being below emmisions standards .... but i wonder if they have the right to order a vass engineers certificate!

Of course they do - who else would have you do it?

They've been doing it for years now :)

So the police. As stupid as some can be are qualified to ask you to get a vass certificate? That's f**ked up. Before any cop does a check on your car ask them if they have completed the according training and have the certificate with then that they can do a rwc check. Has caught out a few cops in my time :) they cbf calling tmu so I left.

kyle i been thinking about it.. so you can get ya defect cleared, i'll take your rims and Trust DD off ur hands for free.. it was a hard decision to make but hook me up. ;)

Oh come on you already knew they could :)

EG 1. The old cooler hole in the engine bay on a Airbag equipped car.

Police have been citing cars for YEARS over that issue. And honestly - how else would you get pinned for it?

99.9% of people are not going to own up to a modification that requires a VASS like that.

EG 2. People also do illegal engine swaps.

More common than you might think, and again well illegal in many ways in accordance with current laws.

Whilst one may not agree, one must agree there is method and purpose to it.

Also ANY officer can defect ANY car. You just have to know what the LAW is. It's not about who can/can not defect a car.

If a run of the mill officer in a Divvy van knew the law, they are well within their rights to defect you and cite a VASS cert.

In theory you'd assume so.

However VicRoads don't care. Sometimes they wont even ask to see the car.

Just give them the RWC, hand in defect - cleared and drive home.

Just depends on the person on the day if they actually want to inspect it, but no, i wouldnt see a reason to require the specific things listed.

Most places do them for that price, some cheaper ($65-$70)

My overall pricing was 200/300 simply because id take a stab the car isn't 100% perfect.

Most cars aren't. Steering rack leaks and so on are common.

yeah, when i had a major defect...got a roadworthy after the time had expired so i couldnt drive it to vicroads, so i called up and i told them the situation and they said for major defects you dont need to bring your car in, only the papers.

and thankgod i aint on the roads...this period there are tmu everywhere.

If you get defected, YOU DESERVE IT, DON'T BREAK THE FQN LAW. Damn kids breaking the law. Its there for a reason.

what...because eg. he wants a boost controller in his car, he derserves a defect, now his a bad person? sorry buddy but your on the wrong forum if your going to be telling people not to have mods and that he deserves it.

no one deserves to cop a defect, the laws are just fkd.

I understand gtr's have the hole for the fmic from the factory... but if you set your car up in the same fashion that gtr's do, why can't it be engineered? r33' and r34 gtr's have airbags too

It can be engineered. the reason they defect cars that have no ring welded around where the piping comes through under your battery tray is because they believe that it reduces the cars frontal impact thus making it crush easily. apparently thats why. glare.gif

Or we could get a return flow cooler that they can't defect for shit...

Yeah cops defect alot of minor shit pointlessly, handbrake click stories etc. and the whole reason they pulled you over in the first place was to try and find something wrong with your car...but you can make the job very hard for them. It's part and parcel with owning a modified import, as are these threads with import forums I guess :D

i knew the defect was coming, my wheels are rediculous and it is definately too low, but engineers? what does he think im stupid enough to take the car there as is and try and get it engineered? i dont see the reasoning behind it just a waste of my time and money, i would have thought a roadworthy would be all i need as the car would have got a vass certificate when it entered the country and i DONT want to engineer any modifications, the car is stock.

You've answered your own question. The reason he's making you do it is that it's a waste of time and money, with the thought that you won't want to do it again (which you inevitably will if you put it back to the way it was.)

Cars don't get VASS certificates when they enter the country, they get complianced. Entirely different scheme.

As Juliette said - you were slapped with a VASS so that you were forced to either get it fixed, or pull everything off and have it taken back to a factory state.

Hence the time and money thing. If you were able to just get a dodgy RWC, you'd never learn.

They are trying to make you understand the law, but it seems like it's not going to work either :/

So expect to get reported and sent for another VASS if you put all the mods back on again.

$1200+ = expensive lesson not to learn for a car worth probably 8-12k

Either get legal, or enjoy being reamed i guess...

this

it's times like these that I'm really glad I live in the country and don't drive when the cops do their all to predictable blitzes.

Well that and the other thing I've learned is that most are farking lazy so if you're driving in the right hand lane they generally cbf pulling you over unless you have some kind of attention seeking mod or are out for your arse!

The other thing I've found is that you can get away with so much more if your car and the bits on it looks like a filthy pig most of the time :P

    • Dang. I love the little 'oil used' bingo card on the side.   🤣  Well, now they can use a box and an oil-filled goon.
    • Many many moons ago, I was chatting with Andy Wyatt, about his auto ignition tuning. One of the HUGE things he said to me, when tuning for power, right where you hit peak ignition timing for your max torque, dramatically increases NOx emissions. He was finding in testing, particularly on engines you could advance timing beyond peak torque, that backing the ignition timing off a couple of degrees only made for a small drop in torque (compared to if you keep backing it off further the same amount of degrees) but dramatically reduced NOx emissions. I'd say targetting for 14.7, and he's even mentioned in some scenarios going slightly leaner, and pulling a few degrees of IGN timing will help pass for emissions quite a lot. However, who tunes an RB for emissions
    • The main stuff from.Vibrant I see is more their intercooler piping, and everyone raving about their clamps, but when I looked it was about $150 per clamp... I was a bit   I also thought the public price SP had up was high. As Mark said, a normal exhaust shop can fab them. It was many years ago that I had a full exhaust built, but for a full turbo back exhaust, and 2 custom built mufflers, plus a high flow cat, was about $1,100, and that was fully installed, drive in, drive out. I believe SP was about $900 for 2 mufflers, just supplied   These days, I just buy the material and built it myself, because I need to stretch my $$$
    • I'm pretty sure if it's considered a gasoline powered vehicle you have to do certification against a fixed, very expensive certification fuel.  If you add two precats and then replace the main cat with two cats back to back you can get an RB26 to do 0.24 g/mi HC, 1.6 g/mi CO, and 0.3 g/mi NOx on the FTP-75 drive cycle. Found this out courtesy of California's laws at great expense. Divide by 1.61 to get g/km. So even with extra cats + precats you're blowing past the NOx limit by probably 2.3x. Probably the only way to get an RB25 or RB26 to meet euro 4 purely from an emissions per km standpoint and not durability/OBD2 requirements is retrofit at least intake side VVT, clearance the pistons to allow the full 50 degrees of advance so part throttle EGR can be maximized, and change the wastegate control from conventional 7 psi spring for example to one that is always fully open if the wastegate line is at 1 atm or higher and only close it in response to vacuum. See BMW's N54 engine as a reference for how this works. You would need to find space for a vacuum tank to function as an accumulator in this system. That way you can avoid any heat loss to the turbine as much as possible during cold start to heat the catalyst faster. Then find some way to eliminate as much as possible cold start enrichment to light off the catalyst rapidly. Maybe secondary air injection if there's no way to avoid cold start enrichment. Close coupled catalysts in the downpipe are probably necessary. I would also probably swap to EV14s, pick something with the correct spray targeting + dual cone pattern for the intake manifold you're using. EV1 style injectors to pass anything resembling modern emissions requires a very annoying air assisted injector system to break up the droplets at part throttle/idle which still doesn't work that great compared to just having smaller droplets from the injector to begin with. Realistically, you're probably going to be financially ahead if you just pay the fines instead. Or don't drive it into the city center. There's a reason why Nissan never bothered to even attempt certifying an RB for CA/US emissions. The VG30 needed external EGR on top of NVCS to pass in the 90s. Doing all of this work is also distinctly expensive and you're going to struggle to find anyone who is remotely interested in helping.
