With the lock up how well does this work? It would be good to do this just whilst tuning then we can put back to standard

I just hit a switch and it dumps 12v onto the solenoid. Around town I don't use it, the converter flares too much for it to lock up anyway, so its easy. If you want to keep the factory lockup circuit you would need a 3 way switch.

3rd gear the converter lockup clutch won't hold on mine. It was fine up to around 300kw, after that we had to run it in 4th in which just holds. Hopefully Kewish can fit some extra clutches into the converter, thats the plan anyway.

Finished installing the speakers today. Turned out really well and even got the bigger Alpine Type R front tweeters to fit in place of the factory tweeter. Better sound quality than the standard speakers without all that harsh pumped up mid bass.

Now to decide if I want to upgrade the head unit. Any one knows of a good single DIN unit that plays DVD's and has wifi or bluetooth for music play back? I don't want a screen it it though.

Pretty easy actually. I just bent up a little bracket to secure it using the factory screw holes and used some adhesive foam strip on the bracket to squash up against the back of tweeter. Now that I think about it, I should have taken a pic of it.

Most when I was looking was a single DIN with a fold out screen. I think you've seen mine? Works well.

I got my battery back today. They saved the one with only 1.9V in it, or so it appears.

I got a chemical lesson that I'm sure only Leon would be vaguely interested in, but basically it has something to do with calcium based batteries using fibreglass as an insulator around the Lead. Apparently they don't behave well when their voltage drops below a certain amount (I think it was 3V?).

So while it has likely now had its live reduced by up to 20%, it should be fine for now after some heavy duty charging. Looking forward to chucking it in tomorrow and going for a drive!

I would have put money on that battery only being good for recycling. Good to see you can get some more use out of it. I only hope it doesn't let you down at an inconvenient time. (Actually every time is inconvenient, isn't it?)

Installed a FMIC on the C34 today. Purchased the JJR stealth kit and pretty happy with the result. It's looks the goods, and funnily enough is pretty stealthy behind all the black!! and thanks to front bar it get's a lot of flow to it.

Unfortunately no pics of the install! My phone camera was playing up... I'll get some pics of the finished product tomoz.

One thing I can say is that there was no instructions.. and after awhile I realised it was missing a mounting bracket, so I had to manufacture my own. Big step considering I've never done something like this before.

Also, I hadnt driven it for 6 weeks and since driving it I've found that my car has been reaaalllly laggy and seems to make a lot more noise than it performs. Its hard to explain.. I may need someone to look at it.

Hey Ryan I think your battery wont last very long. It might have 12v but it will only hold around 50% capacity if that. Once they go flat it kills them.

Most likely you've ended up with a reasonably bad boost leak....do you have a boost gauge, and if so what does it show.

Go back around the whole job and check every hose is seated square, and every hose clamp is tight. The easy way to check a hose clamp is to push hard on the screw part - if it turns on the pipe it is too loose. But even if they are tight, the hoses have to be properly seated on the pipes, ie square on and good overlap

Its got 13v in it at the moment, but according to the battery guys it would probably have lost ~20% of its capacity. So it should be fine, but if I'm not going to drive the car for a while I need to hook the battery up to a charger that floats.

    • I think you're really missing the point. The spec is just the minimum spec that the fuel has to meet. The additive packages can, and do, go above that minimum if the fuel brand feels they need/want to. And so you get BP Ultimate or Shell Ultra (or whatever they call it) making promises to clean your engine better than the standard stuff....simply because they do actually put better additive packages in there. They do not waste special sauce on the plebian fuel if they can avoid it. I didn't say "energy density". I just said "density". That's right, the specific gravity (if you want to use a really shit old imperial description for mass per unit volume). The density being higher indicates a number of things, from reduces oxygen content, to increased numbers of double bonds or cyclic components. That then just happens to flow on to the calorific value on a volume basis being correspondingly higher. The calorific value on a mass basis barely changes, because almost all hydrocarbon materials have a very similar CV per kg. But whatever - the end result is that you do get a bit more energy per litre, which helps to offset some of the sting of the massive price bump over 91. I can go you one better than "I used to work at a fuel station". I had uni lecturers who worked at the Pt Stanvac refinery (at the time they were lecturing, as industry specialist lecturers) who were quite candid about the business. And granted, that was 30+ years ago, and you might note that I have stated above that I think the industry has since collected together near the bottom (quite like ISPs, when you think about it). Oh, did I mention that I am quite literally a combustion engineer? I'm designing (well, actually, trying to avoid designing and trying to make the junior engineer do it) a heavy fuel oil firing system for a cement plant in fricking Iraq, this week. Last week it was natural gas fired this-that. The week before it was LPG fired anode furnaces for a copper smelter (well, the burners for them, not the actual furnaces, which are just big dumb steel). I'm kinda all over fuels.
    • Well my freshly rebuilt RB25DET Neo went bang 1000kms in, completely fried big end bearing in cylinder 1 so bad my engine seized. No knocking or oil pressure issue prior to this happening, all happened within less than a second. Had Nitto oil pump, 8L baffled sump, head drain, oil restrictors, the lot put in to prevent me spinning a bearing like i did to need the rebuild. Mechanic that looked after the works has no idea what caused it. Reckoned it may have been bearing clearance wrong in cylinder 1 we have no idea. Machinist who did the work reckoned it was something on the mechanic. Anyway thats between them, i had no part in it, just paid the money Curiosity question, does the oil system on RB’s go sump > oil pump > filter > around engine? If so, if you had a leak on an oil filter relocation plate, say sump > oil pump > filter > LEAK > around engine would this cause a low oil pressure reading if the sensors was before the filter?   TIA
