Hello all,

Need a little bit of advice on where I can help with my 'line.

Recently the tacometer has started playing up and the needle is bouncing all over the place. It could be sitting at 5 grand when idle or up over 9 grand when cruising. I can still drive the car as I dont need the taco for daily driving, however I got a lovely little EPA notice which needs dealing with and a working taco is a must to get that resolved.

I live in Rowville so I am looking for a workplace in the south eastern suburbs where I could get this fixed. Can anyone recommend a workshop? Or alternatively, anyone had this issue and know how to fix it?

Any help would be appreciated. Cheers.

I haven't used them but maybe this company could help: http://www.hotfrog.com.au/Companies/ShowCompany.aspx?company=Ringwood-Speedometer-Service

Whenever I've had gauge cluster issues in other cars it has been as simple as a bad earth.

good find adam

on my GTST with the apexi RSM connected my needle goes spazzo past the RevLimit Warning set on the Apexi RSM

the hicas light flahes and the RPM goes all the over the shop - fix is to set the rev warning on RSM to 10,000 and it goes away

unrelated to your issue, but another "wierd" gotcha i saw with the RPM needle

The easiest way t fix it is to get a new tacho that works and swap it over.

There are tutorials which in some cases fix the tacho but ive had no luck. I bought a secons hand tachometer and havne had a problem since.

its pretty easy to change the tacho over, just have to get the cluster out and then its three screws to get the tacho out. If you get a whole new cluster, you can see how it works.

Thanks for the advice guys.

Looks like the easiest way will be to replace it fully. However may pull it apart and check some of the connections as per the link provided.

Anyone have a spare tacho for a R33 GTST lying around?

Needing a working taco for an epa is stupid... ...How many cars out there don't have tacos... ...I've owned three... ...and only one of those was an auto... ...I had to get an epa cleared on an old FJ45 Landcruser which doesn't have a taco and they couldn't do anything about it... ...He didn't want to clear it because there wasn't a taco but they were never made with a taco...

My taco isn't working at the moment and I've been thinking of changing mine to a VU meter for the subbie going in the boot!!!... ...Tunes man... ...Woot...

    • What HVAC actuator is under the steering wheel? Do you mean on the RHS of the centre console, immediately to the left of your shin? If so, then yes, it is probably that one, because that is the mode door actuator, and from what I know, it's still a pain in the arse to replace. I don't know about whole dash out, but you certainly have to rip into the centre console section. I don't know if it's covered in the workshop manual, as I haven't spent much time looking at those parts of it. (and by "the workshop manual, I mean the R32 GTR one, which is the most comprehensive one we have, and it should be similar enough between that and later cars to serve as a guide).

    • No I got mine from a friend that had fabricated one … but I had to fit it to my setup which was a hks turbo setup. His was a Garrett -7. So one of my turbos was not a flange for one side … then I had a leak in the welds I had to find a weld shut … in the end the setup was decent priced but I spent a lot to get it fitted. A couple companies I checked would make it but you’re talking 7-9k aud with titanium. No joke mine was 6-7k even second hand after I had to fit it in Hong Kong … labour is expensive here.
    • I'd just like to restate that I don't think anyone here is actually hating I recently sold a car part to a guy who was building a forged auto R34, with MV stall and aiming at ~450kw. I told him that I'm him, from the future and to stop after it explodes once. I told him I knew he won't listen the first time, and that's fine. But if my predictions do come true - Change direction faster than I did. I also said it's probably no coincidence that the dyno plot of a reliable turbo engine starts to look a lot like a N/A motor. :p
