I did this mod a few months ago and managed to snap a few shots of the process.

This is for those who want maximum simplicity and low costs involved in a small upgrade.

1-- Remove the front left wheel of your car.

2-- Take off the inner guard black plastic lining. All the bolts holding it in should be plastic and quite easy to just pull out.

3-- Undo all the bolts holding up the R33 SMIC, and also make sure you loosen up the clamp in the engine bay just under the air filter (shown in the 2nd picture). You may need to temporarily remove your airbox (if you have one) to get to this clamp. I had a pod filter so there was a fair bit of space for me to use.

4-- Once the R33 SMIC is removed, install the R34 SMIC into the exact same locations as for the original intercooler.

5-- Reconnect back the inner guard black plastic lining. You will notice that as the R34 SMIC is taller than the R33 SMIC the guard will stick out a bit, or may not bolt back on exactly the same as before.

For me I bolted it all back (with a bit of gusto) and let the guard hang out a bit as a make-shift scoop for the SMIC. Nothing has flown off yet so it seems to be doing the trick and feeding nicely.

DONE!

Probably the easiest mod you will ever do as a beginner - I hope this basic tutorial will be useful to people

After the mod on-boost kick was harder (this may be a mental thing though :))

Yeah thats the sort of thing im doing. Just bought mine, it has cat back exhaust and pod already, but need a dump and highflow cat. For now i have just done the solenoid mod, but getting a turbotech manual controller to run 10 psi.

Its running well as is, so i cant wait to finish it. Do you think the 34 smic would handle a highflowed standard turbo?

did you buy it off here? looks like the one i sold to a guy on here about 3 months ago... sprayed silver and all lol!

They imo are only good up to 170rwkws, anything more than that and they suffer major heat soak, but better than a 33 one.

    • So either way it is gearbox out and look what is wrong?  I know about the input shaft bearing. Even before swap/new clutch the it sounded exactly like this: So is that inout shaft bearing or the other was installed backwards?  And can some please tell me the part number for that input shaft bearing? The gearbox is small box from R34 N/A and number is FS5W71C. Thank you
    • I am yet to see anyone ever regret a quaife or helical. ...other than drifting/skidpan duties. I kind of want to upgrade my factory helical with a Quaife (but really it's not ultimately that different, and is a MASSIVE UNDERTAKING), that's how good the hype is about them, that I want to try them 'just to see'
    • D2 and Ksport are essentially the same thing and basically just generic Taiwanese manufacture. Better than ChinaBay crap, but... not top shelf. Öhlins have got to be some of the best dampers around, so likely to be a good option. It's going to get to the point though where I suggest you buy from Oz. We have at least 2x excellent options here. If I were you though, I'd be talking to KW about doing something for the R33. There's bugger all difference between that and the 32. In GTR land, anyway.
    • KW only offers a set for the R32 GTR. Popular options are D2 racing, Ksport or Öhlins. I have a D2 Racing coilover set, though I don't know for sure which one.
    • Well, the good news is you have more than one very good option for new coilovers in and around your country. Worth the drive over to KW to talk about GTR stuff.
