hi all,

having a battery problem with my r34 gtr i dont drive the car much and the battery has gone completely flat now my problem is that ive been told not to dissconect the battery cause you can lose the electical setting ie the apeci fc, hks evc. is this true, also the battery is in the back and hard to remove, how much better is a oddesey battery. any help would be appreciated thanks

Apexi PFC won't loose it's memory as it is not stored on volatile memory. It will keep the current tune.

HKS evc should be fine too. The headunit may lose the radio stations and sound preferences though.

When I bought my 34 it already had a yellow top drycell fitted and I've had no problems. Ditto on the pain in the a£$ it is to get to though.

battery isn't that hard to remove

disconnecting the battery shouldn't alter the settings of the PFC, not sure about the EVC, but i would assume it should hold the data in it's memory

If the battery is COMPLETELY flat, then that has the same effect as disconnecting it. Controllers in general should always retain their information - who would want to re-program a PFC just because the battery went flat? Radios and the like will lose their settings.

Taking the battery in 'n out can be a bit fiddly.

If you're concerned about settings...

1) call K-mart or Battery World and ask if they will swap a battery for zero labour and get a price, letting them know what dimensions the battery has + the CCA Rating

2) ask the above shop if they can attach a piggy-back battery during changeover (since I know that both of the above possess such a thing)

3) when you rock up, keep your cool when they see that rear strut brace hehe...

I use the HKS Fcon V pro on the R34.

it doesnt loose memory when the battery is flat

i have the M spec uprated Nissan battery, uprated TS alternator, and upgraded eletrical wiring throughout the car. that helps keep charge

However you should invest in a trickle charger, if you dont drive it much.

no matter how good the battery

the M spec set up above lasts for about 3-4 weeks without being started

When ya buy a new battery to make life easier for youself make sure it is excatly the same size as there is no extra length on the cables that connect to the battery.

I just changed mine last week and the new battery was pretty much the same size but about 20mm taller and i had to extend the positive cable from the battery to the fuse box in the boot.

I removed the boot lining - there just the push in clips then removed the rear strut bar (4 bolts) undo the battery and it just fitted out on its side..

buy the way i have power fc and hks boost controller and had no issues only thing i lost was time and radio stations no biggie

i have a cheap repco battery in my v8 commodore. it gets started every 2 or 3 months (when i need to move it to mow the lawn or get my boat out of the back yard (so it only runs for about a minute each time). i have to charge it about every 6 months or so. would probably last longer if it wasn't an old carby 253 which takes about 30 seconds or so of turning over before it starts.

a decent battery should last about 2 months easily without the car being started (depending on whether it has an alarm draining power, etc)
