Anyone In Vic Able To Lend A Hand With A Road Tune...

Recommended Posts

Howdy guys. After a few years of DIY tuning the car I need a final hand by someone more experienced then me to do a final on road low RPM tune (as in, everything in the higher RPM's has been dyno tuned)

Getting sick of log, alter, upload, log, alter, upload, etc etc etc etc, makes driving the car more of a chore rather then a happy drive. I'm in the western suburbs and not really fussed if I need to drive out. Will pay in cash, alcohol, sexytime, whatever.

Also, car isn't a skyline if you've guessed lol.

Even if I could get some usernames of people i could PM or email or whatever that'd be tops. heaps of places here to dyno tune but (well for obvious reasons) not many who can do a good on-roader.

Spanks.

if u know the basics and have the tools you should be able to do it yourself

what ECU and software are you using to tune it? what cant you do or dont understand yourself?

I do understand the basics....It's mainly the timing side of things I'm not 100% in yet.

ECU is an adaptronic e420c. Software is WARI V8. what can't I do? is drive and tune at the same time.....That's the main bit. for now i need to drive, log, get home, go over log, correspond with map, alter map, save map, upload to car, road test.

AFR's are pretty damn good but it's mainly timing.

Car is N/A aswell.

get a girlfriend or friend to drive and just drive in normal mode, ie you dont have to load it up mega to tune the ignition timing

and basically dial in as much timing as you can without knocking, when you reach the knocking point, back off 2deg and your done

i did this on my gtst with a powerfc and thats all there is too it really, make sure you dont dial in too much

ie add +2 deg to the whole map, plod around (dont load it past 3k) and see how it knocks

then if you see no knock in low area, repeat again

i was able to add +12deg under 3k on my GTST and the results were amazing

never laod it past 3k with that much extra timing but under 3k should be ok

this should change the car from normal/sluggish/doughey to sharp and crisp

Thanks for that writeup mate.

problem is, for whatever reason it is, my whole map in untuned (ignition timing anyway) areas are all 35deg+ from 1800RPM onwards. so I'm in two worlds as to where to start. Do I dial back or advance it more. Hmmm. So much for forking out thousands on a "tune" and getting a "tuned" car back. Ha.

you add more timing on the map (advance it)

the more you advance it, the more efficient the engine becomes, but the more likely it knocks / detonates

so you advance slowly in small increments until you find the knocking point, and take of 2deg

lets say at cell 4,4 its the load point for 2100rpm to 2400rpm

and its say 18deg IGN Timing. drive around go past the range under normal acceleration or whatever and see if it knocks

if it doesnt, change the IGN timing for that cell to say 20deg and repeat

can you build a kncok map with your software?

datalogit does this very well

you bascially drive around and it logs all knocking values onto the map tracer format

so for every cell you can see min/max/avg kncoking

then you know which cells have too much timing and which cells dont have enoguh timing (ie knocking is 0)

If you know your way around a dyno, Sam (Dr Drift) may hire it out if he likes you enough :)

Quite reasonable rates as well and in 1hr of dyno time, you should be able to touch up the whole map and do a power run.

Shite, you can even preserve your license, minimize car sickness and do it right with no chance of an accident on the dyno.

Gizzmo Kmon, Knock Box etc, is ESSENTIAL to tune knock properly if you're just starting out.

You can pick up knock quicker with one of these devices than by a normal human ear, simply because you can filter out all of the noises such as open wastegate, valvetrain, etc.

Good book on general dyno/engine tuning, including tuning ignition for MBT: http://www.fishpond.com.au/Books/Nonfiction/Transport/Automotive/General/9781934709740/?cf=3&rid=224650787&i=1&keywords=dyno+tuning

Google Tuning for MBT as well for a quick primer. You need a dyno and a knock sensing device to tune MBT properly.

Trent @ Status is quite familiar with Adaptronic, and when i had the GT-T, we would go out a couple times on the road, Trent with the laptop, and he'd make sure everything was hunky dory during normal road cruising. He'd have the map up and change things if need be.

Would highly recommend making the trip if you want someone very knowledgeable behind the laptop whilst you're driving.

Hi mate, any contact details for Trent @ status?

Thanks for the tips guys aswell.

Major thing I need to sort out is how to set up the knock filter by first filtering out all normal engine noise. good times ahead.

Forgot to mention a knock sensor is installed and working but the filter doesnt so it registered EVERy noise. No BOV or wastegate, tis an N/A car.

    • Ha ha, all good! I've almost caved in and realised I'm buying one.  I know myself well enough by now that I will start chasing ADHD butterflies half way through building it and not finish it so I'm better off spending the extra money buying one instead of making one just so I can get into straight away.  I would very much enjoy making one as fabrication is probably a strength and definitely a passion but I don't want that to be at the detriment to the car I'm ultimately building it for! There's some pretty good ones around for ~$1100 at the moment so I think I'll just go that way.  At the end I sell it or as mentioned, get another project to make further use of it! Thanks gents.
    • That link was very helpful thank you.
    • That is the option code, not the VIN. Regardless all of that production is considered series 2: https://gtr-registry.com/en-ecr33-vin-table.php
    • Apologies if I sounded like a arse My point was that you will not be able to buy a rotisserie that suits your car, you get the rotisserie frame, and then fabricate parts to mount the rotisserie frame to the body The rotisserie side is easy, but the fabrication of the actual mounts is the tricky part, where to mount so you don't bend/twist the body, plus the geometry involved to get it to turn  If your capable at fabrication, and can work out where the C/L is in relation to the weight is so it actually can turn, you should be sweet I would love to see the progress on this just for the thought processes and fabrication
