cracked open a std nissan filter a while ago and honestly was surprised with it, after a lot of feedback was always to use the Nissan filters becasue they were better i thought i would cut open the next filter i buy and check out the differences between the two.

Here is some photos between the Ryco and the Nissan filter, personally i like the closer pleats and metal vs fibre ends(yes i know they are different sized filters).

I had to put a screwdriver through the ryco filter to get it off the car so you can see some of the damage it has caused.

my hack job and the springs, the Ryco uses a spring and the nissan a flexable plate, i like the nissan better in this instance.

Interested to see what other people have cut open (in australia not on the interweb from overseas) and discussed above.

the ryco seems to have tighter pleats and be better constructed with the general look and feel being better then the Nissan filter.

It made me worry with the fiberous ends on the nissan flter if they were to break off as well rather then the metal on the ryco.

personally i think a lot of it comes from a mix of misguided information, and people being what i like to call brand whores. as well as a lot of import owners thinking their car is something it isn't. the majority of imports (including skylines) are just ordinary cars. there isn't nothing mystical them. the majority of owner of them in japan were probably just family type people who bought them because they thought they looked nice and went ok (the same reason why someone here might buy a commodore or a falcon or even something like a lancer). half of them probably weren't even serviced regularly. then they get bought buy some young enthusiast in australia who thinke they are some spectacular road going race car and that they need to be treated differently to any other car that has ever been made.

ryco filters would be used on probably hundreds of thousands of cars on australian roads. they are probably regarded as the industry standard of the non-genuine filters.
