Some of you might know that I am converting my R33 GTS-T into a targa spec race car and one thing very high on the list was to remove all the heater and air-conditioning. Now that’s all well and good but after looking after Mark’s car at Targa Tas last year and Duncan’s at a very very wet Eastern Creek last round last year there is no way you race competively without a clear screen.

So through my build thread I found Del. Del has been a racer and around racing for longer than most of us have been on this planet. It’s a very small world sometimes as it turns out I have been in conversation with him at every race meeting we both attend. He also knows a number of long term members here as well.

So basically what he is looking for is interested Racers that would like heated front screens. I have confirmed orders for 3 x R32 screens,,, but quite frankly at least 4 is needed for production to start.

Unfortunately R33 or any other Nissan are not on the map at this moment,,, but with interest they should be available mid year. I need to get Del a sample R33 one to send to the UK as a sample.

Here’s some relevant information from Del’s email I received.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Escort MK 1 & MK11,,,Datto 1600,,,HO / XY Falcon,,,Torana XU1,,,Cortina MK 1
Porsche 911 1968 – 1989,,,HQ Holden No joke seriously !,,,Mustang ( Early models )
BMW ( Various ),,,Commodore ( Various )
Screens are available for all various vehicles like Evo 1 – VI, but as yet not the Evo X ( but available in a little while ) and a number of other models inc Subaru GC8 and the R32 GTR . Also RX7 BMW and some Honda models etc etc. With time a number of popular Holden and Ford models will be available in soon.
Details on spec's etc :
After attending Bathurst support races at the 12 Hr earlier this year, and seeing the demise of so much racing, due to the horrendous rain.
It again re-in-forced the benefit’s of having a heated screen so I looked into the supply again especially for the Evo I'm building as it shares a common screen with the Lancer.
I have already placed a firm order, so if there is any interest for additional screens I can add to, this will remain open for approx two weeks at the latest, at which time the order will close.
These are obviously laminated, using full light green tinted glass without the common heavy top tint band like some screens ( Made to current European standards ) They are 4.96 mm thick, have multiple zig zag micro wires up and down with what appears to be one bank / element but is actually two, with a small 5 - 6 mm gap down the centre.
Although you can see these, visibility is considered normal, they are also internationally E marked ( ECE 43R )so legal for ADR ( Not that that matters for racing, however would be suitable for registered cars competing Tarmac Racing type events ).
I'm having these made by a respected company ( Trading for many years ) They are contracted to a number of kit car manufactures for their screen supply, and a number of OEM too inc Ford Europe.
Further .... I requested a number of things from the technical guru within the company to clarify data of the screens i.e. what actual size are the Tungsten Micro Wires in the heating element banks installed in the screens, on each side ( 17 - 22 microns depending on model of car ), do they go right across the screens to the edges, ( very close to the sides ) the heat up / defrost time in seconds or minutes in adverse conditions, ( I'm told something like 2 mins for full vision if covered in heavy frost / ice )
Amps required from what I’m told while in use. ( Approx 12.2 amps while in use ~ amp ( On say an RX7 ) relay required ?
This is one area where my bum knows more about duck shooting, am out of my depth understanding wiring, so I am advised the following verbally from what I wrote down is basically what is below.
This is up to the individual as when installed in current model road going Ford Europe, and some models including the Land Rover series, the screen is obviously controlled by the factory ECU ) So it is advised / recommended to have them relayed and run for a max of 10 mins continuos, where then it’s recommended to leave off for around one minute, anything after that should be again controlled through a switch /relay etc.
Manufacturing / lead times upon payment in full has been received .... ( I'm told to complete any order in 3 - 4 weeks once final order is placed )
As stated - Deposit required for any model ~ $200 upon ordering …. Sorry This has increased from the original quote as manufacturing costs have risen over the last 12 months.
Fixed Total Balance of $295 + GST won't be due till arrival.
Interstate delivery can be arranged as I am happy to box / crate screens personally and deliver to depot of your choice in Sydney as I go there twice a week. Alternatively I can pack and have a courier collect on your behalf.
Insuring the package is your choice and responsibility, but highly recommended to avoid diss-appointments as I cannot be responsible if damage occurs during transportation. Having said that I may be able to have delivered to certain interstate areas for free or next to nothing, being piggy backed with screens I'm already sending interstate.
Data of element positioning etc:
Black line indicates the wire layout / design which surrounds the screen enclosing the elements / banks ( Two )
Attached here is a quote from my supplier as it may interest some who understand ! …. Here’s an example of how the touring/racing car screens are made up. The electrical data is ‘per side’, I try to keep the power density to around the 3.5-4.5W/dm2 because any lower and the performance is not so good and any higher and you risk getting a hazy view when in use. This is all dependant on the windscreen in question, size and shape affects it quite a bit.
The wire on the right side of the drawing is used as the earth strap; the other two are the power supplies.
Conditions Of Purchase :
If I am unable to supply the screens within a given time frame, due to any issues out of my control i.e. strikes or customs hold ups etc, and this genuinely creates a problem for you. I am happy to return your deposit in full, but if just a change of mind on your behalf happens, the deposit is non re-fundable .... Sorry
However I must stress that “ I'm given a manufacturing time and can only give my word on someone else’s. “
Once your preferred method of payment for the screen has been made ( I’d prefer an EFT if poss ) ….. Kindly advise when a deposit has been made by email, and which payment method has been used, including your reference N’o.
In for an R32 screen, of course.
in thre real world visibility is less than ideal at 200 with a fogged up windscreen and wipers that take over 1 sec on the downstroke....
Anyone building a rally or track r32 that does not jump on this is absolutely mad.
Hey ....
Appreciated Neil :thanks:
Great work there Neil, bugger about the R33's
I'm hearin ya .... I shall be sending a sample R33 screen to have made in late March Ryan so all is not lost !
CheeRS .... Del
so you looking at $525 + delivery within Aus?
and from what I understand the elements are almost invisable...not like the current V8 Supercars ones?
Interesting question on the price there Ben,,,I didn't think about the gst content in the deposit,,,so I'm thinking the price is either 524.50 or 544.50. I will find out later today.
Del would be up for answering the element question better than me,,,personally if I had to,,,I'd cop the V8 stupid cars one,,, thinner wire would be better though.
Cheers
Neil.
R32 - when do you need payment by exactly ( I did read but I think I missed it.)?
Unfortunatly Chris we have about 2 weeks to make the R32 ones happen,,,. We need 4 deposit paid screen orders very soon. I'm paying for two and Fatz is paying for his one or maybe I'm paying for his depending on him as well,,,so we need at least one more.
Cheers
Neil.
Can we conferm if they are like the Ford ones, or the V8 Supercar ones? People down here have bought the V8 Supercar style element down here pretty cheap, and stuck them on themselvs (and have them work well)
I found a place in the UK that makes these (I assume it's where the GB is coming from)
Hi ....
Thanks for your interest and sorry for not being more clear Ben.
Allow me clear this price thing up.
As I have imported the first batch in my name basically to guage interest etc, thus not through the business.
The total price will be $495 ~ Plus any internal freight if you purchase in this first order.
If screens are ordered in the second batch, these will be under Competition Windscreens.
Then the price will warrant GST bringing the price to $544.50c again plus freigh etc.
These screens have elements in two seperate banks, one on each side with 250 + zig zag micro fibre tungsten wires, ( 4 mm pitch / width ) which are only visable if you look closely . This is required, as they are designed to suit current road cars.
For the R32 screen there will be as many as 275 - 280. wires in total
" Completely different than the V8 taxi ones " !
R32 - when do you need payment by exactly ( I did read but I think I missed it.)?
Thanks for your interest too Chris
I would require a deposit only within 16 days from now to include in the first order.
Balance is due on arrival.
If the worst come to the worst,I will still honour the three already required once deposits have been received, and the forth will have to be for stock
Howerver I am really stretched to do this but will if need be.
I am also informed that the company that makes the V8 ones, as they are located in Qld.
im not planing on going off topic but i can help in regards to a timer system if people want them. i was looking into a similar timer dor work the othere day. somthing that will turn on and off at a perset time. i would how ever need to know what sort of time they idealy should be on and off for as on for 10 and off for 1 would be no good. a pulse like on for 2 off for 20 sec or equivilent would be better as while its off it will start to fog again.
and to answer a question in the above posts. the 12 amps that they draw could be switched through a decent branded switch only. but a relay is a better option.
Can I be pointed in the right direction by someone for where I could get one of these done for an R34.
I'm on my second version for an R34 heated front screen and so far they have both not worked (one was a proper made version that was drawing way to many amps to be usable and the other was a self stick on version that un-stuck itself the first time the sun shone on the windscreen).
OT - My buddy got one of these UK versions for his EMO and I must say its very awesome. I'd love one but would be happy enough with anything that worked!
snowy, if there is enough interest in 34 screens I believe Derek will be able to get them made at some point. possibly not in this first order but maybe shoot him a pm and see what he can do. and in the meantime contact any 34 owners you know who might be interested and see if you can get together another 4 or 5 blokes after a 34 screen. I'm sure that would help.
yeah but I'm going to need one before mid-march!
    • Uncle Duncan Yeap, FI Interchiller  Works well, normal IAT's cruising with the WTA only went from 50°c+ to 25-30°c with the interchiller  Before, when on it hard, the IAT would see 80-90°c, now, the highest has been was around 38°c IIRC IAT is measured under the blower hat I recommend it for the street or strip where your only on it hard for 10 or so seconds, but it wouldn't be efficient for sustained track use as it would heat soak from the AC turning off or whatever it does during WOT to protect the compressor It really needs the AC running for it to not heat soak and keep the WTA coolant chilled My WTA coolant temps when just cruising is around 2°c
    • Hey Mark...sorry to interrupt your career change to hair dressing... but...did you ever fit the interchiller to the commodore, and if so how was it? And, who made it?
    • I've been pondering this, I really enjoy the convertible thing, for me, it's like riding a motorbike, without all the issue of riding a motorbike, mainly, my old sore arthritic joints getting beaten up, and, being able to do it in shorts and a T-shirt and not needing a helmet and all the other gear required, especially like wearing jackets and pants in the summer, or needing 6 layers of cloths in the winter, or not having wet weather gear handy when your 100km away from home on the bike when it decides to start raining As for the hard top and its Coupe look, whilst I do lose all that open top feeling that I really enjoy, from my experience with the NB with a detachable hard top, the cabin is a much nicer place to be, the difference in noise for one, a hard top quietens down the interior, alot, with the soft top up or down it's pretty noisy, which, after 5 or so hours, can get tiring But, as you stated, the detachable hard top totally changes the look of the car, in a really good way, and for me, the look of a detachable hard top is so much better than the PRHT which looks more like a after thought with its weird bulbous rear roof line For me, the minimal effort of putting in on, or storing it after removing it, is well worth the time and effort for the look alone And yes, I'm sure the next owner will be grateful for it as well.......
    • I get into huffs with people when I suggest the MX5 looks so much better as a coupe than it does as convertible. Pretty sure I don't prefer the convertible version of anything. Good job on the hardtop! The next buyer will appreciate.
    • IMO wrap does have its uses, but like you said, quality wrap, and professional installation, would probably cost want a quality paint job does, but, the paint, if maintained, is basically for life, and much easier to touch up if required  In other news: it's pissing down here, with thunder, lightning and only some small hail "at this stage", luckily all "my" cars are undercover  I've also been contacted by a guy in Newcastle about the SS, he said he will come down next weekend for a look, we'll see how that transpires I guess 🫰
