so i pulled the dash out to fit a stereo and guages and generally just needed a clean up as there is allthis black goop stuck to it, and theres a big crack i need to repair as well.

what im wondering is should I bother painting it while its out..

car is gunmetal grey colour, stereo is a lighter grey and chrome so doesnt really match anything but it was given to me and has bluetooth so its gotta go in.

So is painting the dash cool or just tacky cause i really cant make up my mind, if so what colour..

Also should have posted this in here as well

As for the thing on your dash.... Looks like something aftermarket was there... or is there

The sensor is behind the little grille to the right of it and you should be able to keep it by either putting the gauge far enough away that you dont have to cut it, or just pulling the sensor out and relocating it. The A/C may not work as well (on auto) but it will still work as normal as long as that is plugged in, You just might get to high a fan speed on auto as the sensor might be to far from the cool air

As for painting the dash..... I'd say do whatever you like on that. I painted mine silver, as alot of people have done. I think the dash is just 'to black' especially in a black car, and mine was going bad in alot of places and I was lazy to find the stock colour. Some people like it, others dont. But I think it looks good with my Blue Dash/DVD screen/boost gauge/turbo timer etc etc.

Just do whatever you think would look good For you

thanx,

yeah my aircons long gone so thats no issue i can rip the sensor out then..

theres an intercooler where aircon used to be..

I was thinking maybe a dark silver, or even a black chrome sort of finish, nt sure if there is paint like that but.

Did you just use normal paint , does it stick ok..

I was told to use..... acrylic? Im not sure....

I bought this stuff from supercheap that comes in small cans, its touch up spray paint basically but it seems to work well... Mines got a few scratches on it now, but that wouldnt have happened if I used clear coat.... But being silver, if I'd clear coated it I would have been blinded by the reflection of the sun

Depending on what colour you want there might be a proper plastic and Vinyl paint out there. I used one of these on my VL before I had the skyline and it looked great right up until the day I sold it.

Basically use either one of what I have suggested. I dont remember the brand of the paint from supercheap I used but pretty sure its got its own rack and theres heaps of colours. You'll probably want two cans (its only about $12 a can from memory anyway) and some plastic primer as well as a clear to go over the top. If you can find a gloss black and chuck some clear over it this might get your shiny black that your after. Experiment on the ash tray...

I started by giving my panels a light sand with some 600 grit, cleaning with wax and grease remover, then spraying on some plastic primer. Let that dry then use your paint. Apply light coats as Its better to do 2 or 3 coats. Then a coat or two of clear if you choose to do that.

turns out all that black goop was the old paint, so i stripped that and thuoght id just leave a black plastic finish, but it looked no good,

So turns out it has to be painted anyway, so got some metallic grey to match the car
