Hey all,

Please refer to pictures as i'm not 100% sure if i know what i'm talking about.

I believe it's the CAS that's in the fotos?

Anyhow... i;ve noticed that when engine is running the cas is shaking/wobbly.

Is anyone able to tell me if that's normal or if it looks ok how it is in the foto?

There seems to be only 1 bolt holding it on top as well?!

Got the car like that so now sure if it's okay or not.

How do i go abouts fixing it if it's not okay?

What will i need/parts? etcc... and help on how i do it would be great.

Unless it's fine as it is.

it should not be wobbly. I can't see the bolts. I acn see one in the bottom of your second pic, can see part of the slot where the second one goes (top left of pic) but can't see any bolt (but it could be out of frame) and I think I can see the third bolt (top right). and yes that is the CAS - Cam Angle Sensor (aka crank angle sensor). it's find where it is but you need all 3 bolts in place as otherwise it might be sliding around which will be affecting your timing.

1st pic there is a bolt on the right.. but none of left..

so your saying it should be tight and not moving so i need to find another bolt to secure it?!

im told that it needs to be gapped or spaced properly?

or just get a bolt and tighten it all the way in?

There should be a washer or something behind the CAS to ensure the spacing is correct, yes. Normally your timing belt cover would be performing that function - but for whatever reason you don't have one.

You should definitely have all the bolts in-place, or yes, there's going to be issues - ditto the spacing.

Have you considered putting the cover back on, and bolting it back up that way?

There should be a washer or something behind the CAS to ensure the spacing is correct, yes. Normally your timing belt cover would be performing that function - but for whatever reason you don't have one.

You appear to missing the spacers. These are included in the rubber seal which slots into place in the cam cover. If you tighten the bolts without the spacers the CAS will rub against the cam gear resulting in metal filings. I am guessing the previous owner had discovered this and hence left the CAS loose. Not good. I think the spacers are about 5mm thick. Someone maybe able to confirm.

Also,

1. dont run the engine until the CAS is properly attached

2. check the timing after you've sorted the attachment (there's probably a write up on how to do it in the DIY section)

in relation to point 1.

the previous owner had always run the car with it like that.

and i've run the car like that for the many months i've had it for!

100% right.

Tightening the bolts with no timing belt cover off will kill the CAS, it's just a matter of time.

If the CAS is too close to the exhaust cam's key, it will destroy the CAS' optical sensor and believe me I've destroyed a CAS (not used the spacers from the stock timing belt cover when I put a clear cover on)

It's actually brass washers embedded in a gasket that provides the spacing rather than the cam gear cover per se.

I've heard you can toast your CAS by not having the correct spacing so it pays to be careful.

I have an aftermarket clear cover which has no provision for the OEM washers and gasket, but it provides the (some) spacing instead the way it's designed. I added some thin steel washers myself because the spacing provided by the aftermarket cover was very slightly less than the OEM washers/gasket.

I've heard some aftermarket covers provide no spacing though.

Yes what Tony has said is correct.

And yes you should remove the cover from your CAS and inspect it after you fit a cover and gasket/spacer. What you are looking for is the position of the trigger disc, and if it is rubbing on the optic sensor. If it is, you can carefully and gently tap the shaft back to its position in the CAS bearings where it should be positioned... so the trigger disc is central in its position in the middle of the optic.

    • Yep, pretty much what you said is a good summary. The aftermarket thing just attached to the rim, then has two lines out to valve stems, one to inner wheel, one to outer wheel. Some of the systems even start to air up as you head towards highway speed. IE, you're in the logging tracks, then as speeds increase it knows you're on tarmac and airs up so the driver doesn't even have to remember. I bet the ones that need driver intervention to air up end up seeing a lot more tyre wear from "forest pressures" in use on the highway!
    • Yes, but you need to do these type certifications for tuning parts. That is the absurd part here. Meaning tuning parts are very costly (generally speaking) as well as the technical test documentation for say a turbo swap with more power. It just makes modifying everything crazy expensive and complicated. That bracket has been lost in translation many years ago I assume, it was not there.
    • Hahaha, yeah.... not what you'd call a tamper-proof design.... but yes, with the truck setup, the lines are always connected, but typically they sit just inside the plane of the rear metal mudguards, so if you clear the guards you clear the lines as well. Not rogue 4WD tracks with tree branches and bushes everywhere, ready to hook-up an air hose.     • You're just describing how type certification works. Personally I would be shocked to discover that catalytic converter is not in the stock mounting position. Is there a bracket on the transfer case holding the catalytic converter and front pipe together? If so, it should be in stock position. 
    • You talking about the ones in the photo above? I guess that could make sense. Fixed (but flexible) line from the point up above down to the hubcap thingo, with a rotating air seal thingo. Then fixed (but also still likely flexible) line from the "other side" of the transfer in the hub cap thingo up to the valve stem on the rim. A horrible cludge, but something that could be done. I'd bet on the Unimog version being fed through from the back, as part of the axle assembly, without the need for the vulnerable lines out to the sides. It's amazing what you can do when you have an idea that is not quite impossible. Nearly impossible, but not quite.
