GOR33
what up,im new to this game with this being my first question so i hope someone can help. Ive been told that up here in queensland, there is a certain type of wheel spacer that can be legally used, i can get my hands on a very nice and cheap pair of 18`s but i need spacers to clear the front calipers on my r33, any one know if this is true? Jay95R33
I could be wrong here, but I think that the only spacers that are legal are the ones that first bolt to your hub, and then you can bolt the wheel to the new bolts on the spacer. Soooo, the spacers that I'm talking about aren't the ones that just float on the wheel studs, but actually bolt to the hub... Can someone confirm? Duncan
GOR33, please don't buy spacers, just find wheels that fit properly. Why would you want to compromise with a performance car? EnricoPalazzo
by pushing the wheels out will increase handling?? Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/35086-wheel-spacers/#findComment-714076 Share on other sites
lwells
by pushing the wheels out will increase handling?? In the sense that you can fit wider rims and tyres. LW. Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/35086-wheel-spacers/#findComment-714078 Share on other sites
Duncan
You can fit wider rims fine, you just need the right offset in the first place. Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/35086-wheel-spacers/#findComment-714095 Share on other sites
lwells
You can fit wider rims fine, you just need the right offset in the first place. I am not advocating spacers -- the possibility of them sheering off scares me sh*tless. But if you want to fit some stupidly deep dishes, etc, particularly if you are buying second hand wheels, then I can understand the appeal (even though I wouldn't buy them myself) LW Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/35086-wheel-spacers/#findComment-714098 Share on other sites
sidewaymambo
well, for those people upgrade to large clipers will / may need spacers; if their original wheel offset is for the stock clipers clearence. Neil
I'm with Duncan, wheel spacers are just a band-aid fix and you would really need to change to longer studs while you are at it. Pushing the wheels out may well improve handling on a race car but I doubt most drivers would be able to tell the difference on the street. Proper offset 18's will have no problems with clearance. 0HR-30T
Proper offset 18's will have no problems with clearance. True, but as lwells said,if you were buying second hand rims that 'didnt quite' it would be a "necessary evil" if you like.Remember not everyone can afford a nice set of 18's. Duncan
np, if you can't afford a nice set of 18s with the right offset, but a nice set of 17s with the right offset plus you'd save heaps on tyres too Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/35086-wheel-spacers/#findComment-716087 Share on other sites

Steve
Interesting. The wider the track the better the handling will be, no question there. It is illegal in aust to widen the track beyond 24mm (from memory) or close to it. This is federal law. But if the car has been engineered, its a different matter (except in SA where an engineers report means squat), as approval can be granted to waive federal law, as is the right of all transport ministers (in each state), and is usually delegated to an approved authority - safety being the main concern. I have been told by an engineer that widening the track of a car can put excessive strain on the axles, beyond which they were designed, thus I suppose the rulings. If you change the offset, this will have the same effect as fitting spacers. As long as you get the nut threaded properly on a spacer, how will it be different to altering the offset? EnricoPalazzo
Bob: yes supposeldy spacers do put more strain on axles. Also, Spacers of any type are illegal in SA, even mine where the wheels dont petrude the gaurds, they are still illegal.
