Painting The Interior Roof Lining (R33 Gtst)

Hi peeps,

I am about to embark on a mini rebuild/overhaul of my series 2 33 and part of project involves a new S3 33 GTR interior.

Anyway I got to thinking over many bevvies last night that the crappy looking light grey roof lining & rear view mirror would look a lot better if i could match it to the darker grey colour like the dash/doorskins etc etc.

What would be the best way to do this? Paint, Dye or a full reupholster?

Has anybody here done it?

Im keen for opinions and pics if anyones got them

Id say paint it, would be the easiest and cheapest way.

And should be fine if done right as its not going to get rubeed off

Reupholster would be a bit tricky but could be done just need a few cans of spray glue and some light material.

Spray both surfaces lightly then lay it on.

thats doing it properly uou may be able to just glue material over the old stuff

I looked into it a bit, read up about painting etc. But I was a bit concerned about a lot of people saying how the paint smell didn't ever seem to properly go away and that on some hot days the smell would come back, so I dunno?

I'll most likely get mine retrimmed in alcantara or something similar.

As for the mirror, painting would be fine, that's what I will most likely do (or get a carbon fibre stick on cover from Japan )

If you get the right paint its odourless..

Also you know what might be cool, get that carbon fibre wrap and do you whole hoodlining in it..definately be different..

Jeez Phil that looks awesome. You do realize that's gonna cost a fortune yeh?

The paint smell worries me too, like on a hot day etc.

I couldn't afford to go to the extremes that interior is done to.

However the roof lining and a couple of bits and pieces are do-able, shouldn't cost to much.

Ive been in a few cars with painted interiors and all them had the paint smell, it never went away...

reupholstered would be the way to go for sure...

If your going to change the colours of the plastics you really need a plastic/ vinyl stain instead of paint that way scratches will remains the darker colour and not stand out, as for the headliner remove it from the car and retrim it in whatever fabric you like,if you really want to use something like a vinyl wrap u need to remove the fabric then use a wire brush on a dril and remove every bit of foam, I did it for a leather trimmed car when I put the sunroof in it, not fun (time+tears)

If u go to that utube clip he is actually selling the stuff, has mixed reviews though, but anyone who is painting their seats probably has a few screws loose anyway..I reckon for the roof should be fine..And for the price of a can 20$ its worth a try, if it doesnt work just get it retrimmed later.

no need to strip it right back.

Depends how much $$ your willing to spend and how properly u like to do thongs i guess.

Well when I used to work at Autobarn to retrim a roof lining in normal velvet type material we used to charge around $150-$200.

Depends how much $$ your willing to spend and how properly u like to do thongs i guess.

Main reason is the old fabric with age will start to peel away from the solid underlay. You see a lot of cars, especially smokers cars, that have the roof lining falling down from the adhesive letting go. So even if your roof lining is in good condition, you run the risk of it starting to sag one day. When if you do it all properly, it will last another 10-20 years.

Hey yeah the visors lol........thanks Chris didn't think about that. Does it look the same just a different colour or is it a whole new material?

I'll have some more coating comming your way shortly, plazmaman, a few other little bits and pieces like last time and some ceramicoat for my new turbo housing. Oh yeah can you fix my wheels?
