Hey, I need some help installing a Bosch 044 (in-tank) into a S2 R33 GTSt.

I know roughly what needs to be done, but would like some help from someone who has done a pump install themselves. Obviously, I'm happy to reimburse you for the time taken ($$$ OR ).

I'm located in S.E of VIC but I'm happy to drive to you (unless you're on the border of NSW and VIC, which in that case I'm going to decline unfortunatley)

Either reply or PM me if you're able to help me out :)

Have a read through all the DIY fuel pump installs, Its a pretty easy job. If you know how to work a spanner give it a go yourself :-)

Hey mate, thanks for the heads up, but I've read through the DIY/Tutorials (before I began researching, I had ZERO idea on fuel pumps and how to do anything regarding it, but after scouring the forums, I know how to do it but need that little bit of confidence that someone experienced can bring lol). Cheers for the suggestion anyway :)

Isn't the 044 an external pump? Or are you planning on mounting it in tank?

Hey mate, yep it's an external one but I'm mounting it in tank. Quite a few people are getting great results using it in tank as it allows you to use a standard sock arrangement (would of chose 040 but I'm not a fan of the metal gauze bottom, which can't use the standard sock arrangment).

So for me, it was either the 044 in tank or the Walbro...... (p.s I've read ALOT of topics about Walbros and in almost all of them, you always appear and mention how it failed on you LOL :P )

Is the 044 physically bigger than the 040? Cause the 040 was a real tight squeeze to fit it in. It's not a difficult job just

time consuming unless you have little arms and x-ray vision :)

My 040 actually sits lower in the tank than the standard arrangment, which gives me a few more miles til empty...so I praise the metal gauze!

I'm not sure to be honest! But I'd presume it would be slightly bigger as the 044 weighs 1030grams whilst the 040 weighs 930grams.

Ahhhh k the, yeah I read one way to get around the 1/4 tank problem is to run the 040 lower, but you run the risk of sucking up all the crap on the bottom of the tank?

never heard of a 1/4 of a tank problem?

and the pump always sucks from the bottom, so there is no "sucking crap up from the bottom" as, it always sucks from the bottom

I've read that some people get problems with running with 1/4 tank or conrnering as the pick up isn't low enough so it starves and cuts out.

The mesh on the sock of standard pump is much finer than the metal gauze of the 040 isnt it?

i've got a Bosch 040 installed, don't seem to have this 1/4 problem - works fine.

Anyway, i was under the impression that the 044 is a much larger pump ment to be mounted externally of the fuel tank ? I had abit of trouble getting the bosch 040 onto the stock fuel pump bracket cos it was too fat from memory... not sure if the 044 is fatter?

1/4 fuel tank problem sounds like a problem someone who didn't mount the pump low enough in the tank would have. You do need to cut the fuel pump bracket and hose clamp the pump to make it fit.

Metal gauze on the 040 is plenty fine. They wouldn't put on a gauze that was going to stuff up the pump with debris...sounds like you've been reading reviews from paranoid androids :)

There's really not that much stuff at the bottom of the tank anyway. If you're worried about it, clean out the tank with a syphon. My 040 sits touching the bottom of the tank and I have no debris related fuelling issues. Didn't clean out the tank, haven't even changed my fuel filter yet (though a new filter is recommended at some point after a pump change). But if you've already bought the 044, well now we have to work out how to mount it in tank :miner:

Oh ok then, fairrr enough. Yeah, the 044 is slightly larger and it's meant for external mounting but the only reason I've gone for it was because I get to use the sock attachment lol

Hmmm..... that's kinda annoying for me then, cos after reading other people's experiences with them, they were complaing about it so I opted for the 044 LOL DAMN IT!! Hahahaha

I've got the 044 on order but it hasn't been dispatched yet, so do you think I should get them to change it over for the 040 instead, provided it's possible by them? Or should I just stick with the 044 and get it to fit by working at the bracket?

I highly doubt I'd find the limits of the 040, let alone the 044 (aiming for only 200rwkw until the turbo gives way and a high flow is needed). Like I said, only reason I went the 044 over the 040 (and Walbro) was because I could use the sock attachment lol

doesnt walboro use a sock? you should of got a walboro pump if you wanted the sock

Yeah, the Walbro does use a sock but I've read more negatives than positives from other people's experiances. Otherwise, I woulda went the the Walbro hehe

Anywayy, I called up Bosch and they don't recommend that the 044 be used in-tank as it can't be submerged in fuel and to go the 040, yet there's quite a few people who have done so with no problems.

All these dilemmas on me wanting just an upgraded fuel pump. FML.

Oh, and the 040 is the same diameter as the 044 (60mm). Only difference in size is that the 044 is 196mm versus the 040 at 169mm.

I got no experience installing an 044 in-tank, so can't really comment on whether you should cancel your 044 for a 040, but if you want to play it safe I would...because we at least know the 040 will drop straight in with a few adjustments (a hacksaw, a fuel hose and a solder of the terminals), which you would probably have to do anyway to get the 044 to fit in-tank.

Plenty of people running 300rwkw+ on the 040, you'll be fine with one of these.

    • So we have most the interior back in, and for the first time with one OEM speaker hooked up. The 31 is running, driving and now tunes!!! Hahaha yet another step for the sub that sat 10m under for two weeks!!! unbelievable really 👌 lots of love work and not giving up on her. Seen so many youngsters part way less, and in way better condition. I’m stubborn, thinking another problem is just a hurdle to overcome, One at a time. IMG_9277.mov
    • That is correct. I'm using a modified ABS ring and a ZF speed sensor on my rear diff for speed input. I'm running a Haltech ecu.
    • Been busy with the newborn. We originally thought we were going to go for a third, but we're good with two lol. He's starting to actually sleep now so I've had some energy to work on the car. It's been parked away in the garage since late November due to winter.  I went ahead and redid all my head oil drains. I originally had my front and rear head drain going into the same pipe but have since split them up. I also added an Ethanol content sensor to get ready to run E85 this summer. Tossed it on my return line. Sensor sits nicely under my intake manifold.    I also have a lot of parts that came in for my rear end. I'll be swapping over to a 3.3 final drive and doing the GK teck anti squat mod. While the rear subframe is off, I'll also change every bushing. We're planning on buying another house soon with the condition that I get at a minimum a 2 door garage, so I'll wait to have more room for this. Now onto the strange things that recently happened... After changing the lower rad hose (It had been sitting in my cabinet for well over a year and was the last hose I had to replace), I let the car idle in the garage to bleed my coolant. After running for a few minutes, it started missing. Got much worst within a minute or two and then stalled and would not restart. My crank sensor decided to crap itself. No damage, no explanation, just died. I went ahead and replaced it with another ZF sensor but the heavier duty stainless model with a shield. Tossed that in and started right up. Has anyone else seen this? I hate when things fail without cause. Luckily this was a blessing in disguise... This lead me to recheck my timing. It seems I may have had a beer or two the last time I had set my TDC angle as I was off exactly 5 degrees... I miscounted a line haha. I was running 5 degrees less then commanded. It's a little embarrassing but helps explain why my dyno operator seemed to think I should be making more then 478rwkws.

    • Nah no bearings, just slip fit.  Would be a reasonably challenging but not impossible job to modify it to run bearings but I'm hoping that's not necessary as I may have well built one myself if I end up spending hours modifying it!
