Thanks gents - chipping away at it slowly!

That is a nice tight fit. Looks awesome sitting in there though. I have a 31 sitting next my 32 at home will have to take some measurements the fullrace mani is absolute porn.

The mani is very nice but the finnishing in a few area's isn't to the standard I'd expect considering the asking price. Glad I got mine cheap!

Trial fit of the fuel cell all done, the hole saw packed it in so I had to resort to the slow method (lots of small holes followed by a file!). Good times :P

Cardboard is a template which will be made in steel to cover the old fuel tank access hole.

^ thats something i need to do :)

had a look through your thread but i couldn’t see if you where planning on doing some circuit racing. if so, might the cell be in a bit of a dangerous spot or are you going to put some protection around it?

+ where did you get the diff mount from?

great build man

Cheers James. Yeh the plan is club level stuff but keeping the rego while I don't have space for a trailer and dedicated tow car.

Not sure about the cell location being an issue, I can't really see any difference which side of the floor it sits on from a rear impact point of view (other than fuel spilling on the ground rather than inside the boot if it were to split). I certainly think it's better than mounting it part way through the floor like most people have to do due to the spare tyre well (risk of slicing it in half in a rear hit). It will be covered on the underside if that's what you mean?

Brake master, clutch master & slave rebuilt plus some braided brake & clutch lines. Just need to give the booster a sand and coat of paint. Also grabbed some adjustable LCA's - I think originally godspeed but the welds have been ground back and professionally re-welded, they've also been machined to take off the shelf SKF bearings rather than the chinese bearings they came with.

Rebuilt both wastegates with new diaphragms/springs etc and set them up with shortened speedflow fittings (without cutting them down they limited valve travel).

Time to make some intercooler pipes and find someone to do the wastegate plumbing and new dump pipe.

Nice work Nick, got a rough ETA?

Hopefully in the first quarter next year but we will see. I still need to find someone to build the engine, and that's assuming the new head hasn't been lost in transit somewhere :(

  • 1 month later...

So I made good use of the long weekend, progress! But sadly still no head some 4 months later

Rebuilt brake & clutch masters fitted

Dummied up the flares

Lower rad hose adaptor for the rad breather tank from garage7.

eng_bay_06.jpg

Mocked up the new oil filter location

eng_bay_05.jpg

Found homes for the rad breather tank, accusump and fpr.... the accumulator is friggin enormous! Also fitted up the plenum so it's ready for IC piping to be made.

Getting closer! Shame it's not my engine :P

And put the seats back in so we can fabricate a hardness bar

Time for the fab work and hopefully some wiring.

From fatz stockpile of carbon bits ;)

+ where did you get the diff mount from?

great build man

The diff mount was from z31parts but it failed in fairly dramatic fashion so I wouldn't recommend one. It was replaced with a solid mount..which reminds me I need to find solid alloy subframe bushes to replace the nolathane ones which allow the subframe to move too much.

    • That's the thing. Cam is smaller than before.. though the old cam was +6 degrees advanced. We're talking huge changes here, the narrowbands want to trim out 20% of fuel and pull the (wideband) idle to like 16.0 AFR or such. One side is a little more trimmy than the other. Think along the lines of ~20% to ~15-18%. Unfortunately my scouring of the internet hasn't really found anyone with this issue. People either just disable NB's or have them wildly different, where one is -20% and the other is +20 or 0 (i.e a sensor is just dead/wiring is just busted). Turning them off and relying on the base map only results in the wideband reporting at about 14.0 with the Varex closed. It'd be a little leaner (closer to 14.7ish) with the Varex open. I know I can just change the switch points so that the narrowbands agree with the wideband, but it's still odd. Both of them are reading voltage, it's just that they're reading quite high mv, in the ~800 region. It's just odd. This was with the IAT fudged to report it was about ~22 degrees which is my guesstimation of the temperature in the room. I have an OEM sensor ready to try tonight, which is slow and crap - but .. worked last time I used it. Sadly I am aware that idle tuning with the big TB is going to be a PITA and I look 'forward' to many hours spent stalling or stumbling idle or delving into drivability things.
    • The GTR strut brace clears the new manifold.. by about 0.5mm. So this means I need to buy an OEM GTT Strut brace (again), which will clear the new manifold, but not the bonnet vents. I guess I can sell the GTR Strut brace with the bonnet with the vents as a package deal as someone will need this one day. So my choices are vented bonnet but no strut brace, or GTR Bonnet with OEM brace (which I have to buy) but is bright red instead of the same colour as the rest of the car, which means the entire front end of the car will just be red until it goes back to paint jail. In other news the engine starts and doesn't leak. Why both O2 narrowband sensors think the tune is rich AF I do not know. The idle is also pretty shitty and my expensive IAT sensor from the USA is dead. The car sounds awful. But I assume or at least hope this is due to the many exhaust leaks, and the concrete garage it is in, sitting there with 0 intake bolted to it, and no bonnet or panels or anything to stop the induction/intake sound which is about 200db.
    • C'mon! At least come kicking and screaming into the 2000s. BA XR8 bulge.
    • No such thing as E30 in Sydney servos As stated above, flex fuel is your only viable,  and "safe" option I believe
