350Gt Sedan Problem

Recommended Posts

hi guys, just bought a 2002 350GT-8 as the family car and i'm absolutely amazed with the car so thats awesome.

however, i have a small problem:

sometimes... when i start the car the VDC light is on (on the dash which means its off) and the "SLIP" light in between the tacho and the speedo is on constantly...not only that but the car feels like its in 5th gear and won't change....even if i chuck it in manual mode it won't change....its like the car is "semi immobilised" in other words it feels like its not completely disabled the engine so it starts and drives but only in one really high gear and its really sluggish...

when i switch the car off and on a few times, the "SLIP" and VDC light stay

off as they should and the car drives normally.

is this something any of you have seen before?

cheers,

Nas

I have been told to check the breaks when the vdc signal plays up but if its stuck in gear i would be looking at the cvt box

oh yeah somethings telling me its the cvt box too coz the guy who sold it to me reckons it needs a service every 5 years or 70,000kms....being a 2002 model with 47,000kms its due now if its never had an oil change.

what confuses me is that how does the computer know that the tranny needs an oil change which leads me to think that maybe the cars immobiliser is playing up coz this problem seems like its electrical

having said that, i'm not a mechanic so if anybody has any experience with this could you please post here or pm me coz i got the car as a family car and last thing i want is for the wife with the new bub being stuck somewhere

Just make sure when you do get it serviced they use the correct fluid. Do a search on here I am pretty sure I have seen this topic a few times.

*edit seems you found it......

oh yeah thanks man i did find that thread but i was told when i bought the car that i could only use this particular oil and nothing else or else risk fudging up the tranny but i'm just not sure that this is the problem just yet...have to get someone to plug it into a diagnostics computer/thingo and it will probably show up...i dunno...

CVT-8  ........try & get a 5 speed box installed..........a couple of grand -then trouble free for years---- CVT will provide on-going pain ..sorry.

Has this been done yet as im interested when my transmission plays up getting this done?

apparantly quite common when the CVTs die .....spoke to a guy at Five Dock 18 months ago who claimed to have done a few changeovers for customers.

are you saying that its quite common that i'm getting this problem with starting coz of the CVT transmission is dieing?

FIRST thing to do is find someone with a decent scan tool and see what the story is.

Jeezus people on here are ridiculous.... oh "just swap the POS 5speed tiptronic in there".... FFS?! domokun.gif

I'll put a dollar on it not being related to the cvt in anyway.whistling.gif

Why does everyone rag on the gt8 box??????rant.gif

Get it checked out, i.e. fluid level & scan tool. If no joy, contact CVT.CO.NZ, they would probably be the best guys to get info from- outside Japan.

P.s.- Nissan tested this box and at 120K, stripped it down for inspection and found no wear, and even considered putting the original oil back in for more testing, Only consider swapping out the box if the cost of repair outweighs switching.

Dealer/ repairer I know has had alot of trouble with CVT-8 that he's sold.....he won't touch 'em now....and has done quite a few swaps.

Thats all i'm throwing into this thread -pinch.gif ----that i know first hand someone that changes them over for people who have trouble with the CVT --and he's had enough of them because of the failure rate /issues he's experienced .........THATS ALL :action-smiley-069: .........people who have got a good one & like em...GREAT .

pay for $1300 for a CVT oil change. Will fix 'most' issues...Search the threads for more info - I have posted heaps of CVT stuff here when I owned a GT8....The guy I sold my car to hasn't had any trouble with my ex-car since he bought it.

Sometimes it's just a lucky draw with jap imports...You may get a super-reliable car, or a super-lemon....

For the same reason, I am out of the Jap Import car scene...

i wish it was only $1300 for the oil change....i got quoted $1400 just for the oil plus labour to flush tranny cooler (apparently the tranny has its own radiator or something) and flush torque converter etc otherwise if you don't flush all of these things including the tranny itself then it won't take all the oil its supposed to. so i'm looking around $2000 for CVT oil change :(

So has it been scanned yet? at 47,000kms it should not need an oil change.

And have you got a second opinion from another outfit?

The oil runs though the bottom of the radiator and then there is another air/air cooler in front of that with filter or something there aswell.

Hi Nas

Don't be so keen to swap to the 5spd gearbox, you'll find that it's a far cry from the luxury feel of the gt8 cvt.

Take this from somebody who have own(ed) both of them ;)

You do have to take care and make sure you have the tranny fluid changed properly ie, correct fluid, every say 80-100k

Beware of the odometer in import cars, in general take them with a pinch of salt.

Look at how worn the drivers seat, brake discs, etc instead.

I did not trust that my GT8 had done 40+k when i bought it so i bit the bullet and got the tranny fluid changed to be safe.

IRev in Bayswater is very experienced with v35 and they have the scan tool. They got the tranny oil at the best price for me.

    • I am currently going this route. I am curious how much horse power you put behind the cut bell housing? Collins was telling me I am going to crack it and bluh bluh bluh. Because I didn’t buy the custom fly wheel from him. I am looking for somewhere around like 500 hp
    • Forgot to mention that these are the before pics when I first got it!
    • Thanks @PranK for the updated member status, much appreciated! 👍🏼 Now, about those pics… Unfortunately I could only find ones that I took in the dark. I was soon to discover that underneath it wasn’t in the best shape, but it was mine and that’s all I cared about at the time 😆
    • Oh, and only having done this task yesterday, I've now driven the car ~60km since, and while it is hard to avoid placebo effect and confirmation bias, I reckon that some annoyances I had with the way the car has been behaving have improved. Which....kinda makes sense, I guess. If the bushes were really stiff and resisting rotation, they would have been contributing to the effective wheel rate. And if it was more so on one side (which it was, because one side was worse than the other) then.... you might imagine that the additional rate would be asymmetric, and potentially even different between compression and rebound. And so... the car has been twitchy at higher speeds - like freeway on ramps. It really shouldn't be. The wheel alignment is good and there are no (other) known problems elsewhere in the suspension. But at 90-100 on a long sweeping ramp, tiny steering wheel motions would make it feel like it wanted to rear steer. Quite nervous. At lower speeds it would heave about in a manner that it didn't use to. Didn't want to put power down, etc etc. Now...seems to behave better. Am going to have to concentrate on the various corners where it has exhibited weirdness, on the rare occasions when I can get a decent run at them without Methanial getting in the way in his D-Max/Ranger/LDV Van/etc.
