personally I wish we had a national racing series like the british touring cars; so much more variety as a result of their regulations no doubt.

BMW in V8 supercabs? still wouldn't be interested

hell, even WRC is Ford/Citroen lately, boring

I love watching the british touring cars they're way more entertaining than big lumbering v8 supercars. They're not scared to get knuckle deep in a scrap for positions either because there cars aren't super expensive one off items like the supercars are.

I read something ages ago on bmw and merc thinking of joining the v8 supercars. The problem for them is their high-tech cutting-edge engines are completely different to the fat-ass v8 engines being raced. 5 years i was watching a commentator describing the experience of being near a v8 supercar engine doing 7500rpm on the bench, whereas european cars at the same time were doing that from factory (yes i know the power output is different and the racecar tune ould be more aggressive).

Anyways, the thing biggest hurdle they (merc and bmw) were talking about was spending the time and money in r&d for essentially low tech dumbed down engines.

I stopped watching it years ago... boring!

I agree , ford vs holdens is totally f...cked , i stopped going 6 years ago .

I think the noose has taken the strain , bring any other vehicle maker on board for christ sakes !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

bmw and merc have big v8's, they just don't have a tonne of market for them because fuel is costly in Europe, the roads aren't as suited to big cars universally over there and they charge 5 times as much for them.

Another manufacturer would be great. There has been plenty of rumurs about toyota and even recently I heard mitsubishi were considering designing a front engine rear drive platform that could posibly also be used in the v8sc. Bmw would be great too.

A turbocharged version of the 370z would be awsome too if nissan came on board. I dont think the twin turbo four wheel drive r35 would be allowed but the rear drive 370z may be allowed. Of coarse in naturally aspirated form it would struggle against larger capacity v8s so a turbo charged version would be great to see out there.

The R35's used in the Super GT are V8 and rear wheel drive. Do you research.

you mean like the F50 that rocks a VK in a land barge RWD platform? Or the relatively smaller C35 sedans? Neither sold in oz tho in full volume.

I thought the restrictions in place in v8supertaxi's meant that both bogan sleds were essentially the same shit with different shells? I doubt BMW or Nissan for that matter would be prepared to Nascar it up for a fringe consumer group like australia.

Would be more interesting if the manufacturers had to use the same engines as in the road car (obviously worked versions thereof) and to see a number of other manufacturers in there (say maybe BMW, MB, Audi etc) would be awesome.

Love to see some Jap brands in there, but they would need to bring a V8 model sedan into Aus first!!

Other categories are already available for this, you just have to actually go to the track to watch it!

That was a freaking great watch, watched a fair few more of them too. Great series like that make motorsport, these overweight shells STILL running underhead cams are just not as interesting as any david vs goliath style battle (big v8's vs nimble less powerful cars). Sport is also largely dominated by bogans too who think that

1. the cars on track have any relation to the cars on the road

2. that v8 supercars are te premier motorsport

3. that introducing some interesting variety will ruin the sport's bogan history over the past couple of decades

4. introducing another make would bu un-strayan

Stripped out factory cars with suspension mods make for a great series. Remember the btcc, 5-10 years ago almost every manufacturer was entered, and the cars were damn fast for their "milk bottle" engines, would give the v8's a bit of a run on a twisty circuit.

The people posting about how great Grp A racing was...did you actually watch the races or seen footage? The racing was generally terrible. Cool cars for sure. I still remember the first V8 race at Amaroo and it was a revelation. Winton and Amaroo sometimes gave us good racing with the M3 in the hunt with Nissans, Sierras etc and the V8s did ok in the wet when Larry was up for it. But generally there was little racing

For some people, it's not about "lets make the racing so artificially close its boring or WOWEE look at all those awesome overtakes, this is so good....."

Just watching a shootout from that era is f**king awesome and more entertaining then a v8 supercar race.

Basically they want to make the sport as profitable as possible so look forward to almost identical cars, more boring street circuits and whatever artificial means they will use to make the racing "better".

Are people so stupid that they have to see an overtake every 30 seconds for the racing series to be a success ?

But not only was the racing pretty awful so was the telecast on seven (you'd get an hour squeezed in between the football or failing that on after the late movie on a Sunday night ie 10.30 start). People should remember that there used to be one race of less than an hour on Sunday with only qualifying on Saturday. So there is much more actual racing nowadays. Added to that there were relatively few cars - the 1992 rounds for Tassie and WA had maybe a dozen entrants.

The legacy of group A is the great cars it generated. The racing was ordinary & the set up unsustainable once it lost manufacturer support. V8's for all its faults has atleast allows more teams to prosper and is actually less dependent on the manufacturers than group A.

That article didn't say enough about engine restrictions. They can't just let bmw and merc in with their NA v8's. The article implied there was freedom, but the german v8's produce as much power as the supercars in road going cars, in race trim they'd thrash the meat head low tech v8 supercar engines.

All that article really says is they'll let other manufactures enter, but they have to use the same cars (effectively).

I wonder if it's possible to have an interesting variety and good racing anymore? Sure back in the day there were great battles against big american v8's and small euro boxes (such as minies), but suspension, chassis and engine technology is too advanced now, even a fat supercar can be made a decent racer.

What could they do to the supercar series to make it more interesting?
