Hi all , I'm having a few starting issues with my 33 and I doubt its the battery . It now has to be connected to my CTek charger so that it WILL start when I want it too .

Recently got home after half an hours drive and the cow wouldn't start after I'd shut it down to open the garage door . From cold it fires up quite willingly off the charger but not so well having stood around after a reasonable run out somewhere . When I get it home its back on the charger which claims its around 3/4 charged .

I reckon I need an alternator and I usually have higher output ones than std fitted to my cars if they need changing .

I think I remember reading that some Maxima's had 100 or 120 amp output alternators on them where R33s tend to be 80 or 90 and can be Hitachi or Mitsubishi .

Anyone had a win with a higher output Japanese alternator on an R33 RB25 powered car ?

Cheers , Adrian .

unless your using lots of electrical power then a bigger alternator prob wont help. could be a few things... something draining the battery and the charger is compensating. will it start if you use the charger then dont try to start it for a while?

the battery may be at fault and the charger is keeping a surface charge in. what is the charge rate? should be 13.8- 14.4 ideally. but as log as its above 13 it should be enough if all other components are in good working order. i would be checking voltage 30 mins after its been running then check again in the morning and see how far it has dropped. if it has still 12+ in the morning check voltage while cranking and it shouldnt go below 10v

I may have had a win with this . I stumbled across a 95 A32 Maxima (VQ30DE) in a wrecker and surprise surprise it had a Hitachi LR1110-705 (110a) alternator on it . They take a bit of digging to remove , hate transverse V6 front wheel drives , but at least when you remove them yourself you get all the fasteners and plugs etc .

I'm not sure if it will be a direct fit to my GTS25T but I think it will be close enough to go in without too much of a fight . The cars ODO showed 196K and the badly cracked rad top tank is most likely what killed that car .

Myself and a mechanic friend freshened up a 2nd hand Z32 300ZX Hitachi alternator for the old Subaru and the upgrade from 50 to 80a output was good - no dim lights at idle . This Maxima alt owes me a whole $35 and the other one cost $50 and a pair of bearings . I'll get this one tested and if good we'll split it and replace its bearings - and brushes if required .

More later , cheers A .

BTW - be wary of old plastic top rad tanks because they can go without warning and damage engines easily . I say the top one because the hot side tanks are always the ones that cop the hottest coolant and generally die first .

I dont understand how an alternator will help your car start?

it will help charge a battery, but it doesnt aid in starting the car...

you need to ask why your battery charge is being brought down so quickly.

Good call. OP should check what the alternator is putting out. If its in the usual 14-14.8 volt range, then turn everything off (ie remove key), pull earth off the battery and connect earth to the battery negative via a multimeter in current mode. This will tell you how much current is being pulled with everything off. IIRC mine was about 20 milliamps. If its a lot more than that, pull fuses one a time and see if the reading drops.

AFAIK VL alternators are 85 amp.

    • Starting with issues 1 - 5, we have already run into a problem...!  Issue #4 contained 2x front brake calipers, instead of 1 caliper and 1x steering knuckle. Will have to call DeAgostini on Monday to sort it out. Anyway here's some photos.  Issue #1 is the front bumper, headlights and number plate. Issue #2 is the front wheel (with "We produced with spartan air." text on the centre cap!) and tyre, the front lip spoiler and cylinder head cover with ignition coils under the centre cover... which will never be seen again. Issue #3 is the bonnet and cylinder head. Issue #4 is the front strut, brake disc (with laser etched metal discs) and brake caliper. I stopped here because of the issue with the missing steering knuckle.  Next update will be #5 - #10 in a few weeks.
    • DeAgostini is one of a few companies that release quite large (the largest commonly available size actually) 1/8 scale models in a series of weekly issues over 100 - 110 instalments.  They release different models for different markets and DeAgostini Japan have release the BNR32 Skyline GT-R Nismo last month. I've made two of these 1/8 scale sized cars (one an R35 GT-R from 2012 - 2014, the other I'm just about halfway through, a BNR34 Skyline GT-R from the 2Fast 2Furious movie) so when this R32 was announced there was no way I could ignore it as it's my favourite out of all Nissans.  Each issue costs around $20 so it costs about $2.2K when completed. I suppose it is very expensive for what it is, but the quality and details are really very good, and there are many "gimmicks" like fully functioning exterior and interior lights operated with a remote control, working steering, all doors/bonnet/boot/fuel lid open and close, the side mirrors fold in and it even has a speaker for the engine revving sounds when you turn the lights on.  Each issue comes with a magazine that tells the story of the BNR32 Skyline GT-R Nismo from the first design stages of the BNR32 to Group A homologation and the various racing version that were run in the Japanese Group A and JGTC, and Australian Group A.  So I plan to update the build in this thread 5 issues at a time.  https://deagostini.jp/r32/?srsltid=AfmBOooKjxDc4EUK2rmXqMBPgyHfFJ24s4oEPJBNpnF-lFlsRoW0PE6P
    • As per title.. has anyone used so far? Keen to hear results, comparisons. In the market for a new mani for my new turbo. Any issues cracking?
    • Re read everything that has been written about this in this thread.. Let us know if you're still confused.
    • This would be a new pump with new gears. I'm just unclear on whether it's a good idea to run more oil pump flow if you don't actually need said flow. Oil level is set a minute or so after shutting off a warm engine so wouldn't the high RPM oil level in the sump end up lower all things equal? Plan is OEM clearances, main concern in my mind is whether the OEM pump can keep up with the flow requirements of any additional oil coolers.
