Personally i think this is a silly goal to try and achieve.

I mean you could be right up there in the Records with a late 8, early 9sec GTR.

Building the car to go 300km/h needs a different approach, not to mention you wont be able to test the car to 300km/h on a 1/4 mile strip. So you will be forced to do it illegally on the street which is insanely stupid. At 300km/h it doesnt matter how good of a driver or how good your brakes are.

All kinds of things can happen at 300km/h, ive seen movie after movie of cars that are going almost 300km/h, the car drives into a cross or back wind and is literally picked up and thrown. The RX7 video springs to mind, it got lifted dropped on its roof and slid for almost a KM before stopping. Not to mention in a recent HPI issue they showed the 350Z that crashed at 300km/h in the desert... Just cos there isnt anything to hit, doesnt mean you cant crash.

Also, once you get 300km/h in 13-14sec or whatever ... Then what?

Whats the fun in that?

Theres so much more in Drag Competition with the amount of money you have to spend. You can be in the records and open up all kinds of things, sponsorship, invites to race in japan, invites to the biggest races all around the country etc etc

Thats my opinion anyway,

Just remember, at 300km/h, there is no second chance, you better get one damn good roll cage installed

OK Let’s get into it then……..

The first decision you have to make is, how are you going to make the 1,000 bhp these turbo’s rate? Since horsepower = torque X rpm, you either have to increase the torque and/or the rpm. For that sort of power you are looking at both in fairly large lumps.

There are 2 schools of thought….

On is RB26’s at 2.7 or 2.8 litres (small bore and stroke increases)

RB26 - 86 X 73.7 = 2,570 cc’s

RB27 - 87.5 X 73.7 = 2,660 cc’s (using any brand forged pistons and RB26 block and crank with any brand forged conrods)

RB28 – 87.5 X 77 = 2,779 cc’s (using any brand forged pistons and HKS, JUN, Tomei etc crank and conrods and RB26 block)

This requires max engine revs of around 10,500 to 11,000 rpm to make the horsepower target.

The other, is RB26’s at 3.0 or 3.1 litres (small bore and larger stroke increases)

RB26 – 86 X 73.7 = 2,570 cc’s

RB30 - 86.5 X 85 = 2,998 cc’s (using any brand forged pistons with an RB30 block and crank and any brand forged conrods)

RB31 - 87.5 X 85 = 3,068 cc’s (using any brand forged pistons with an RB30 block and crank any brand forged conrods)

OS Giken 3 litre – 86.X 86 = 2,999 cc’s (using a complete OS Giken 3 litre bottom end)

By far the cheapest is by using an RB30 block and crank with forged rods and pistons, cost would be around $10K. The most expensive is the OS Giken 3 litre, which last time I checked was $25K. The other options fall somewhere in between.

That gets you a bottom end to suite the turbos. Next post will be top ends.

In the interim, I am sure the guys will have some comments on the possible bottom end options.

There's nothing terribly "top secret" or "proprietry" with Mario's setup. But he is one of the few people in the world with the resources and inclination to build a car like that.

In a few years if the development of the RB26 continues, and the popularity of Skylines in the US picks up, then it will be significantly cheaper to build up an RBxx filled with aftermarket parts. How do CNC ported heads flowing 310+ cfm off the shelf sound?

paragon, good luck with the project. I dont have anything to offer with info, but I would like to see the finished product.

IMHO, if you want to build a 0-300 car, look at the land of the rising sun. They have been doing it for a while, so you can learn a few lessons from what they have already found out the hard way.

I have one comment for you

drive or be taken for a drive in an 800 hp car and ask the owner how often he drives it.

600 hp in a gtr is great good fun in fact and very driveable even day.

in the november 2003 issue of motor mag (has a hsv 4wd on the front cover green)

they had:

gtr r33- 5 speed, 350kw weighing 1532kg ---306.9km/h

maserati coupe cambiocorsa- 6 speed sequential, 287kw, weighing 1680kg---264.9km/h

lamborghini murcielago- 6 speed, 426kw, 1650kg---303.8km/h

hsv gts sedan- 4 speed auto, 300kw, 1710kg---260km/h

jaguar xjs 6.0(oldish car built/stripped for circuit work)- 6 speed, 450 kw, 1440kg---283.1km/h

csv mondo gt(holden)- 6 speed, 370kw, 1660kg---280.5km/h

roaring forties rf40(the old gt40 ford)- 5 speed, 320 kw, 1100kg---282.1km/h

holden monaro cv8 targa(yeah i know another holden this one built specifically for targa tasmania) -6 speed, 330kw, 1550kg---271.4km/h

VT commodore v8 supercar (yep and another)- 6 speed, 450kw, 1350kg---295.1km/h

at end of the day here's what they wrote:

You'd better beleive it wasn't, it huffered and snuffled it's way to an incredible 299.1km/h on it's first pass, followed by a full Lamborghini-beating 304.3km/h on its second. A cloud of white smoke as it dud a U-turn deep into the braking area was though to have signalled a terminal turbo-blow out, but it turned out to be just a lot of oil moving into the top end of the motor under duress.

But even better was to come when owner Tony Avramides strapped on his helmet. Unencumbered by McConville's idea of mechanical sympathy (he'd been changing up at about 8500rpm and crossing the line at 8250rpm). Avramides took his change up points well into the red and added a couple of kays to the top speed, finishing the day on 306.9km/h*

i think tony would've played around with the gearing on the gearbox to get it to there, i'm not too sure, and obviously at those speeds you'll need to do something with the oil, maybe a dry sump setup. They did it at Avalon airport south-west of melbourne.

that was down the avalon runway, this guy wants to build one that will do it in under 20 seconds which requires alot of $$ and hp.

Theres a big difference from a car that can touch 300 down a runway to one that can do it in under 20 seconds. Even by cousins stock mx6 turbo could touch 240km/h down avalon years ago.

oohh k my bad didn't read that part sorry.

does he have any idea the g-forces it's gonna pull to get it under 20-sec to 300km/h, not to mention the driveline stress, i think he might need a bit more than 80 big ones to get there.

but like i said good luck and even better if he does go ahead with it.

How about we simply put down what we think he needs to achieve it. After all it might actually to be fun to let the mind stretch the envelope..........

So is it 2.6, 2.7, 2.8, 3.0 or 3.1 litres?

My vote is 3.1 litres, need that torque.

I prefer 3.0 litre OS Giken kit. I reckon the full-counter crankshaft is worth more than the extra 100cc that you get from an aussie RB30 bottom end. OS rate this engine at something like 13,000rpm - so I reckon its a better bet when you're going to be consistently taking the motor past 10,000rpm. This option does take a chunk out of our $80,000 budget though :)

As for cams, i'd be looking at HKS step pro or something with around 290 degrees duration, and as much lift as feasable :)

Management would definitely be MoTeC M800.

The fastest ever run was by the Veilside R32 GTR at 13 Seconds.

Car ran perfectly fine when I parked it at the end of the year. I took the engine out and painted the engine bay, and put a fuel cell with an inline walbro 255 instead of the in tank unit I had last year. After reinstalling everything, the engine floods when the fuel pump primes. if i pull the fuel pump fuse it'll start, and as soon as I put the fuse back in it starts running ridiculously rich. I checked the tps voltage, and its fine. Cleaned the maf as it had some dust from sitting on a shelf all winter, fuel pressure is correct while running, but wont fire until there is less than 5psi in the lines. The fuel lines are run correctly. I have found a few threads with the same problem but no actual explanation of what fixed it, the threads just ended. Any help would be appreciated. I found the problem though. There was a break in one of the ecu coolant temp sensor wires. Once it was repaired it fired right up with no problems. I would have never thought a non working coolant temp sensor would have caused such an issue.
    • Hi sorry late reply I didnt get a chance to take any pics (my mechanics on the other side of the city) but the plugs were fouled from being too rich. I noticed the MAF wasn't genuine, so I replaced it with a genuine green label unit. I also swapped in a different ignitor, but the issue remains. I've narrowed it down a bit now: - If I unplug and reconnect the fuel lines and install fresh spark plugs, the car starts right up and runs perfectly. Took it around the block with no issues - As soon as I shut it off and try to restart, it won't start again - Fuel pressure while cranking is steady around 40 psi, injectors have good spray, return line is clear, and the FPR vacuum is working. It just seems like it's getting flooded after the first start I unplugged coolant sensors to see if its related to ECU flooding but that didnt make a difference. Im thinking its related to this because this issue only started happening after fixing coolant leaks and replacing the bottom part of the stock manifolds coolant pipe. My mechanic took off the inlet to get to get to do these repairs. My mechanics actually just an old mate who's retired now so ill be taking it to a different mechanic who i know has exp with RBs to see if they find anything. If you have any ideas please send em lll give it a try. Ive tried other things like swapping the injectors, fuel rail, different fuel pressure regs, different ignitor, spark plugs, comp test and MAF but the same issue persists.
    • My return flow is custom and puts the return behind the reo, instead of at the bottom. All my core is in the air flow, rather than losing some of it up behind the reo. I realise that the core really acts more as a spiky heatsink than as a constant rate heat exchanger, and that therefore size is important.... but mine fits everything I needed and wanted without having to cut anything, and that's worth something too. And there won't be a hot patch of core up behind the reo after every hit, releasing heat back into the intake air.
