I just got a new Nismo GT LSD installed yesterday and they said to drive it slow for 3-500kms to wear it in. I also was expecting some chattering which i got, but heres the thing. Sometimes/often when driving corners slow or at low speed the thing really thumps i can feel it grabbing and then that force is released and i get some fairly loud thumps. When driving straight its fine and its makes some noise at, say, 40-50kph light cornering. So, this being my first LSD< im wondering

1, is this normal?

2, Will it get less violent over time?

3, Will the noise reduce when it get the NISMO oil changed into it after the run in period (like the bottle says)

4, What were your experiences running in an LSD

Did you set it on it's soft setting or leave it on it's 'out of the box' medium setting?

Also if you used the Veruspeed oil that 'should' come with it, it has no friction modifier in it so you may need to stop in to your local performance supplier like rocket industries, performance wholesale or other places like that to pick up a bottle of redline friction modifier. This will help to quieten it down.

I see on pt3 what you said about the oil but it should get the Nismo oil straight out of the box.

It will become less agressive over time but if it's truly annoying, you can adjust the centre from the R/R half shaft. Just drop the R/R (right rear)driveshaft where it meets the half shaft and put your socket (17 or 19mm from memory) into the hole and turn it anti clockwise. That will put it onto it's light setting.

Also, if you didn't do figure 8's in a carpark or whatever for a half hour, it probably hasn't bed in completely yet either

it came with the Nismo oil but, on advice at the shop, I had them put in Wakos cheaper oil for the bed in stage and then after 500kms they will put in the nismo stuff. Apparently the nismo stuff is meant to have an additive in it that quiets the chattereing, but is this what im experiencing...?

I know that the more expensive GT-PRO LSD has a way to adjust it, but i have the normal non adjust type.

I havent done figure 8s in a car park yet due to no time and very few car park areas to do it (Japan!) but im hoping that just driving it with care, not thrashing it etc will get the job done over time.

I notice the nismo page says( The design standard for the initial torque output value is 8.0 kgf·m at the time of delivery. After the LSD is broken in and the plates are working well together, it will stabilize at 6.0 to 6.5 kgf·m. ) I guess this means it should calm down a little over time?

The diff is 1.5 way, but im just still a bit surprised. Put it this way, its not an annoying sound so much as its a noise that has me a little worried, like it feels like its not quite right, i wince a little sometimes on the slow cornereing. hmmmm

Without doing this (as instructed in the Nismo instructions) you will not bed it in correctly. Nismo is a Japanese company, surely they found a place to do figure 8's. Try ringing them to ask where :P

yeah it's normal mate. a tight mech LSD (regardless of 1way, 1.5way or 2way) will give you some nasty noises and bumps and chattering when new and tight and can do even for a long long time. when doing tight slow turns it may feel like the arse end is about to fall out of your car but believe me it's fine. I'm sure the workshop in japan you are using knows what a new LSD is like so if you are really worried get them to drive but my bet is it's completely normal. the reason is they lock up under the slightest throttle application so at low speed tight turns you have one wheel needing to travel a shorter distance than the other but as they are effectively locked together by the diff you either get some tyre chirping (wheel slips on the surface) or the diff locking and unlocking providing the chatter/shudder.

The Nismo diff is noisy irrespective of which setting you have it on. The lowest setting is alot less nasty than the tightest, however. I found that using something other than the fluid provided with the diff does quieten it down a little.

nismo reccomend driving in the hills to bed it in, it's the KAAZ diffs that tell you to do the fig 8's ;)

remember to do them in first gear and to have the clutch in on the turns

my guess is that nismo probably think they have more chance of getting people to actually use their method

I ran it in with 30 mins of figure 8s. man, thats boring. It seemed kinda quieter after that time, as in i could do 8s with almost no chatter, but on normal driving it was still there. I think ultimately its normal and just what i gotta live with

A locker is awesome on a really stiff car like a v8 supercar, notice how they jack there wheels to unload one back wheel

I had zero issue with turn in with my nismo 2way lsd in my r33 gts-t, my old man even drove it and had little issue with it.

And regarding the noise issue, Was your install setup correctly? (i mean when it was install in the housing, eg correct backlash etc)

I bought myself a brand new nismo 2way lsd (normal GT type, non-adjustable) install in the housing by a pro, ran the lsd as nismo stated change the oil after the running 300-500km (using the nismo/motul oil) and mine was not very noises at all i was very happy with it

For anyone still reading this, I found Nismo oil to be the best for quietness. It appears to have been made with motul, but in Aus I put in the motul brand oil in and although it chattered less than cheap oil, I will be soon ordering the Redline friction modifier to see if that helps me more, as its still a little too noisy for my liking.

    • Starting with issues 1 - 5, we have already run into a problem...!  Issue #4 contained 2x front brake calipers, instead of 1 caliper and 1x steering knuckle. Will have to call DeAgostini on Monday to sort it out. Anyway here's some photos.  Issue #1 is the front bumper, headlights and number plate. Issue #2 is the front wheel (with "We produced with spartan air." text on the centre cap!) and tyre, the front lip spoiler and cylinder head cover with ignition coils under the centre cover... which will never be seen again. Issue #3 is the bonnet and cylinder head. Issue #4 is the front strut, brake disc (with laser etched metal discs) and brake caliper. I stopped here because of the issue with the missing steering knuckle.  Next update will be #5 - #10 in a few weeks.
    • DeAgostini is one of a few companies that release quite large (the largest commonly available size actually) 1/8 scale models in a series of weekly issues over 100 - 110 instalments.  They release different models for different markets and DeAgostini Japan have release the BNR32 Skyline GT-R Nismo last month. I've made two of these 1/8 scale sized cars (one an R35 GT-R from 2012 - 2014, the other I'm just about halfway through, a BNR34 Skyline GT-R from the 2Fast 2Furious movie) so when this R32 was announced there was no way I could ignore it as it's my favourite out of all Nissans.  Each issue costs around $20 so it costs about $2.2K when completed. I suppose it is very expensive for what it is, but the quality and details are really very good, and there are many "gimmicks" like fully functioning exterior and interior lights operated with a remote control, working steering, all doors/bonnet/boot/fuel lid open and close, the side mirrors fold in and it even has a speaker for the engine revving sounds when you turn the lights on.  Each issue comes with a magazine that tells the story of the BNR32 Skyline GT-R Nismo from the first design stages of the BNR32 to Group A homologation and the various racing version that were run in the Japanese Group A and JGTC, and Australian Group A.  So I plan to update the build in this thread 5 issues at a time.  https://deagostini.jp/r32/?srsltid=AfmBOooKjxDc4EUK2rmXqMBPgyHfFJ24s4oEPJBNpnF-lFlsRoW0PE6P

    • Re read everything that has been written about this in this thread.. Let us know if you're still confused.
    • This would be a new pump with new gears. I'm just unclear on whether it's a good idea to run more oil pump flow if you don't actually need said flow. Oil level is set a minute or so after shutting off a warm engine so wouldn't the high RPM oil level in the sump end up lower all things equal? Plan is OEM clearances, main concern in my mind is whether the OEM pump can keep up with the flow requirements of any additional oil coolers.
