Battery Dying

gday guys

got a problem recently my battery decided to go flat recently but for no known reason so i thought mines a couple of years old and ill replace it, worked for a couple of days but now wont last for more than 7-8 hours and wont start after being connected for that period of time,

anyone know what could be wrong? alternator?

It could be your alternator ( most likely ) or check your main fuze in the engine bay mine cracked and was arcing out

could be the charge rate the alternator is supplying. something draining the battery when parked up. volt drop through bad connections or inadequate cabling. does it only fail to start after being parked up overnight or wont start after running? check charge rate with a multimeter if you have one.

ive just been disconnecting the battery overnight for like 2 months starts up fine after that, i forgot to do it at work yesterday, got there at 730 went outside and 4 and dead.

well something is draining the battery. if you have a multimeter you should be able to use the 10A scale. pull a battery lead off and connect one lead to batt terminal and the other to the cable. then you pull fuses until the current on the meter drops right down and you should have an idea from fuse description where the drain lies...could be anything from alarm system to shorted diode inside the alternator.

Do an amps drain test - remove the negative terminal of the battery and connect a multi meter between it, then read out how many amps you get (should be around 0.05amps) Before you do this make sure all accessorys are off doors closed etc. If its excessive start pulling fuses to identify which circuit is draining. Id start off with any aftermarket electrical items first, as there usually the first to fail or cause problems. If thats ok, check your alternator charge rate. It should charge the battery to around the 14v mark.....

If you've recently installed HIDs or audio amps go for those fuses first - will almost definitely be the thing you recently installed.
