Would like to know where the oil level should sit on the factory R33 oil gauge , for a healthy running Rb25et ? Just notice after a oil service the gauge reads up near the top which is where the 8 kg/cm mark is , but after a little use the gauge will drop down to the next mark level which is in between the 8kg/cm & the 4kg/cm . So like the 3/4 mark so to speak ! When i check the oil dipstick the oil is still on the full mark , so the engine hasn't used any oil , but the oil pressure has dropped a little. Is this ok or is it just the oil getting a bit thinner once it has been used a little ? I use Royal Purple 10w-40w. The level will never drop below that 3/4 mark so to speak. Any advice would be much appreciated :thanks:

My guess is you just overfilled it... What was it reading pre oil change?

Could be a faulty gauge also but as I said what was it reading pre oil change...

Mine is about 6 on startup and comes to just below 2 on warm on idle.

SIts around 4'ish when driving 'normally'.

No never overfill it , always put 4.3 litres of oil which takes it just near the full mark. Since owning the car the oil gauge has always been near the 8kg/cm mark in pressure & at normal operating temp would never sit around the 4ish level. Mine always sits around the 6 or above .

I can't remember what the factory kg/cm reading is (I have aftermarket dials that read in psi). But in normal driving it should be around halfway on the dile which is 55psi.

I have been looking at getting after market gauges , which give a more accurate reading. Eg Oil , Temp & knock level. Can't u get a plug in device which reads all of these that plugs into the ecu ? What setup have u got in ur 33 ?

My gauge might be playing up cause the oil level is always reading into the higher area , never sits near the halfway mark at idle !

Sorry I should have clarified. I don't have an aftermarket oil pressure gauge, I just have white faced dials in my car and they read in psi instead of kg/cm.

But yeah the factory oil pressure gauge is a bit suss so I take it with a grain of salt.

As far as I am aware, there is nothing that simply plugs in into our cars, you will always have to wire something in. And besides, it isn't so much the gauge itself that is crap, it's the 15+ year old senders.

At idle mine sits on like 25-30psi these days. Sometimes it falls towards zero and scares the shit out of me, but it is just the factory gauge acting up.

    • How fast are you doing the downshift? 4th gear was revised multiple times until 1998 to fix this issue. Synchro clips can fall out, synchros can wear. Most likely you're looking at a new transmission unfortunately. If you need to limp it until then double clutch downshifts into 4th.
    • Sorry I was being harsh there, but am I wrong? You can buy a M340i easily, and there's loads available second hand. A lot more workshops modifying them as well. How about getting parts for them? Don't get me wrong, I'd love a 400R, even a 4cyl (I looked at a few V36s before buying my shitbox BMW). Sadly Infiniti died in Aus and we're stuck with importing them as niche vehicles. Supply and demand
    • Probably straight swap for an R32 GT-R? lol
    • Yes I think we changed out the transmission fluid as I had a leak last year so we changed out the seals also. Need to check.    I should have said just change from 5th to 4th gear … down shift. There’s a grind.    I have a new clutch X clutch … but as I said all the changes in other gears are fine.
    • Change the transmission fluid. I would try Motorcraft XT-M5-QS if you have it in your area for a reasonable price. Also, double check your clutch is fully disengaging. If you are not pushing the clutch pedal to the floor fully for every shift now is the time to start. Make sure the clutch is fully bled. The damper line requires two distinct bleed points to be purged of air or it will not disengage the clutch properly. If either hydraulic cylinders input or output are losing hydraulic pressure in their seals/leaking you can have problems like this. If you've ruled out everything else then the most likely explanation is the synchros are worn and you need to double clutch the shift or rebuild/replace the transmission. The transfer case is discontinued FYI so you may want to rebuild it while you're in there too. If the chain stretches past spec it can do a ton of damage.
