Hi guys,

Ive had a bit a of a search and found some interesting points, but i wanted to get some situation specific responses.

Ok, so ive got an R34GTT with a Neo engine in it, Its had quite a bit of mods to it, if you like i can list ?

some basics (cam, exhaust, intercooler, injectors, fuel pump, k&n pod, pfc, etc etc) standard radiator and fan im sure

ive just noticed yesterday while driving it around that the warning light on the water temp gauge was flashing (apexi water temp gauge) when the water temp reached 90deg C

Im not 100% but Im pretty sure it normally sits around 82-86deg C, and yesterday was the first time ive noticed it do this before. It was about 36degC during the day.

I did notice that it got higher temp sat in traffic or at lights, and while driving dropped to approx 88, i dont think the air con made a real difference whether it was on or not.

this leads me think perhaps thermostat, or radiator or fan are an issue?

It didnt get any higher than the 92 deg C, but I am worried that there might be a problem that if left untreated could cause some serious damage to the engine.

It is going for a service on monday next week but i dont want to kill it before then if its a problem =\

any pointers would be great!

36deg ambient temp and stuck in traffic.. 92deg water temp doesn't seem that bad, if it's going over 100deg on the street I would be getting worried. Even with big burnouts on a 40deg in my skyline I've never seen over 105deg (and even that didn't throw any coolant out, with the pressure and additives, boiling point is about 110deg).

ok, that doesnt sound too bad.

is it possible the warning light is calibrated slightly low? cause it has never come on before that ive noticed??

i will still get the mechanic to check cooling system make sure its all ok.

thanks for your reply bubba!

Well the Neo's do run hotter than the earlier RB's (82deg thermostat as opposed to the 76.5deg on my 32) so for the warning light to come on at 90deg it could be calibrated a bit too low (most aftermarket gauges with warning lamps, the warning level should be able to be adjusted).

By all means, get your mechanic to test the cooling system, radiator could have some crap in it that is moving about.

The radiators in our cars (I'm assuming the 34GTT has the same thickness radiator as my Stagea and Skyline standard) are woefully thin for our climate. GTR radiators are almost twice as thick and was what I upgraded to in my 32, I had an ebay spec alloy radiator but wasn't happy with the operating temps (would hold at about 80deg for a while until it heatsoaked, then it would rocket up to 95ish very quickly) so ditched it in favour of the GTR radiator.

cool

thanks man! i greatly appreciate it

the radiator isnt very thick at all, so i might look at getting a gtr one, should be fairly easy to fit i imagine??? i removed one from my old 180sx once and that wasnt too hard so it cant be too different can it?!

we'll see what the mechanic says

thanks again bubba

    • I also understand psi but apparently most things make more sense in kpa oil pressure being one of a few exceptions so im trying to learn ahahahah, I have no idea of the relief spring pressure tbh I thought 110 which is the absolute peak it hits was about right, I was thinking of removing the relief and making sure it is in good condition, I would just replace it but couldn't find a replacement for an n1 pump too easily but I could just be blind.
    • It certainly does make sense that there is just no oil to pick up, but I can go 3 or 4 gears of WOT and have no oil pressure issues too (I have no logs of this unfortunately) and I have a fair amount of oiling mods to try and help only thing I'm missing is a rear head drain which is potentially the most helpful.
    • speaking of the relief spring and noting this is one of those stupid times where I understand imperial (psi) but the graph is in metric (kpa), it looks like the oil pressure is a little low at full noise too, isn't the relief spring 120psi/830kpa?
    • No. All these dirty old Datsuns are shitboxes. Including the GTR.
    • Yeah well I was thinking...there is nothing that happens when you get off the throttle that should cause low oil pressure, its not like clearances suddenly change or and the relief spring would close and in any case the sensor is on the feed side....so more likely there was no oil available to pick up which means all the basic oil control stuff to: 1. keep oil out of the head (restrictors) 2. get it back out of the head when it gets there (external breathers/oil return, drilling out the block and head oil returns) 3. have more oil in the sump to pick up - larger capacity sump 4. have more oil near the pick up - baffles
