i've got a spare pair of c-spanners (the tools you are after) that you could even buy from me if you wanted but my workload is chockers for the next week

You can tap them round with a flat screw driver and hammer

Doing this with spring collars always damages the collars, especially if they're alloy, and sometimes the threads. Just wait and use the spanners...
