Excellant work bobby I commend you.

Thought I'd add I was working for APC in springwood couple years

ago, in which I had the pleasure of working on a Bathurst r31 skyline.

I was told by the owner that during the racing year of 1987 the budget was

3 million dollars. Replacement cost of the exhaust manifold on the car was surprisingly

10 thousand dollars!

Was that rod marklands old car the R31 rb20 turbo?

There has been a slight change in this build with cam selection. Previously mentioned we were using IN EX 260 10.25 lift Tomei now we will be using IN 270 10.25 lift EX 260 10.25 Lift still Tomei cams, John has done some further calculations and found this to be the best combination for the motor.

I will get more info on why he has decided on this Intake cam!!

Do you get a cam card with the Tomei camshafts?

If so do you know what the IVO, IVC, EVO and EVC degrees are?

Those figures should actually be decided on by the engine builder. The info they supply (Tomei etc) are for a given lobe centre figure. That why i laugh everytime i read some-one quoting cam sprocket degree adjustsments as cam settings. . Unless you know where the cams are set ie: lobe centres before you start playing with them your just guessing and hoping for the best...

Good to hear your getting close to start up Bobby

The above pic shows the external oil supply tot he head , No oil will be supplied from the block. We can alos control the amount of oil for the head.

The above video, John has give a light skim of the head, he only took off 2 thou.

Motor is ready for final check and finished off very soon

Huge respect for this build, proven builds are great in practice and economic terms, but there is something to be said about the satisfaction of looking outside the box and creating solutions which push the boundaries. To succeed doing this is to properly achieve something, however just dumping a bunch of cash at a workshop to build your car to 400kw using the same methods that have been used a million times before, is just that, very little has been learned, and in my mind, very little has been achieved.

Thank you for your comment.

Yes its not the money its all about getting it right

We have also changed the headgasket to a 0.9mm Nismo Gt500 gasket from the 1.00 mm cometic, and the final deack height is +4 thou and using the 0.9mm head gasket we can achieve 33 thou squish.

With this quench distance, static compression 10:1 what boost pressure will be achievable to make the power you want?

Squish at 33 thou 10: 1 comp - boost in manifold will be 34psi and in the cylinder i think john said this will become like 15 psi.

In the documents with calculation there is a right about boost pressure.

Bobby, early on you mentioned that John looked at making a custom plenum for this engine... can you go into any detail on what was proposed before you scrapped the idea?

I have been looking at "Lehmann" style plenums recently and wondering if this is what John was considering.

There was a really good thread on the hydridz forums about a 'lehmann' style dual plenum inlet manifold being designed and made for an L28 I think it was. It was a long thread but had alot of drawings and CFD testing done with the guys design, think he got it all CNC machined out of two big chunks of billet in the end. Looked amazing!

Damn you Michael! I want to make one now!

I read it! :)

I want to design one and I want you to make it... I am so time poor it is making me sick.

    • I'm late to the party on this one but good to see common sense has prevailed and the turbo kit is coming.
    • She's looking good Greg. Colour suits it perfectly 👍
    • I had a look at the FAB9 EFR kit, around $8500 AU before delivery, so add in shipping, installation, consumables and tuning, I believe the price difference would be negligible  And whilst I am paying top dollar at MX5 Mania, if I have any issues with the kit they are local for support,  and from my experience, will happily go out of their way to help, hell, I've purchased parts from them and asked "how do I install or remove parts" and they have fitted a few of them for free, this means more to me than saving a few thousand dollars And yes, 99% of the time I just plod around in the car, that may change once I start hearing turbo whooshy noises, but, as I have 3 family members is the constabulary, even when I'm up it, it is only up to the speed limit, or occasionally, but rarely, overtaking on the Hwy (I just plod in the left lane typically and enjoy the drive) Plus the kids would never let it go if I got booked speeding, Jackie is constantly getting critiqued by the kids about her driving, which I think is hilarious, and tell them that she is "bringing shame to our family", so heaven forbid if I ever got done speeding, after all my mouthing off about her driving, I would never live it down, and it would be another thing she would bring up any chance she got Like the time I got drunk about 15 years ago and fell out of a cab, which gets brought up at least a few times every year since it happened Good times
    • True, might get it looked at. Found out you can in fact flatten the 12v battery relatively easily too the other day (kids lefts the hazards on) so meaning to get that checked in the new year. What's odd is it'll blow cold from both vents if you have the ac down as low as poss (18), but anything else the passenger one blows warmish. Also has been summer since I got it obvs but noticed it didn't seem to want to blow hot last night when we had a cold snap.
