hi guys,

a mate of mine is thinking of getting a Toyota GT Starlet before eventually progressing to a skyline. He just got his license and wanna the starlet as a stepping stone. I think its a pretty good idea.

He's not planning on making it loud, noisy and copbait on the road but he did asked me as a favour to post this thread on his behalf cos he wanna heard your views/experiences on the starlet.

The one he's looking at now is a 1994 black GT Starlet with aftermarket rims and exhaust system but alas, its an auto but he had got plans to convert it to a manual.

Please post your views and comments, guys. Hopefully, this does not escalate to a competition of egos or petty online fistfight :)

cheers all

Everything sounds good until this point: "auto but he had got plans to convert it to a manual." - golden rule of thumb: if you want a manual - BUY ONE!! It's a hell of a lot easier to say 'I'll convert it later' than to actually do it/pay for it.

Other than that - great little cars.

My mate owns a very quick gt starlet (180 kw @ wheels) which is a helluva lot for a small 1.3 litre car with a dry weight of 830 kg. Id have to agree on buying a manual one now as it is more trouble than its worth converting.

One more thing, i suggest getting the earlier model with the straight headlights, those circle ones make me sick, but thats just MHO.

Ohh, and dont count on going very fast with alot of weight in or being carried by the car. These things arent really known for strong tourque levels with such a low displacement but they are alot of fun (Upside is low fuel consumption though).

doesn't have much go above 90km/hr ? that could be a bit of a problem couldn't it?

They look ok for that small car sort of thing I guess.. maybe a little overpriced IMHO, but with some rims and bodykit can look kind of nice. Seen some work done to them to push them into a massive 13sec bracket

I had one a year or so ago. Built it up from a 65kw @ wheels up to a 140kw @ wheels rocket. Had a full whiteline kit, and could throw it into anything (until i got a pretty tight LSD). I could not speak any higher of a car. Did not have one problem with it. A good mate of mine bought it off me and he still hasnt had any problems.

In conclusion: Absolutely awesome. I wish i still had it.

in all honest, your first car should be shit. i drove a non turbo auto vl and it was terrible but i learnt most of driving in it so yeah. just go with something simple and easy, dont go extreme, do that for your 2nd car

    • The powder coating came in at $250 EACH. The TRX rims got a coat of clearcoat on the outside only.
    • Bit wet, but YUMMY
    • Keeping in mind that I am currently getting flat 10 L/100km on my RB25DET, which means >>500km/tank. I would test this car for vacuum leaks, check codes and AFM signal with NissDataScan as D says, check plugs, do a compression check while they are out.
    • It is hard to be specific half way across the world...but it *seems* like it might have a minor issue. Is the idle stable and does it rev smoothly? I would not expect any pops out of what I am assuming is a standard ECU, standard tune, standard exhaust. You can use Nissan Data Scan to find out exactly what is happening when it runs, the cable/software is reasonably affordable if you are not planning on changing the ECU (which hopefully you are not with an NA skyline) BTW your mileage may not be that far off, these are heavy old tech cars, and being NA might mean you use a heavy foot to keep up with traffic....
    • Hey guys! Y'all are the masters so figured I'd check in on a few items here. - My engine sounds ever-so-slightly more raspy than the other NA RB25s I've listened to. It's barely noticeable but definitely a slightly different sound. - When I back off the throttle at high RPM, I will sometimes get a pop out of the exhaust, assuming this can be diagnosed as misfire. Some history on the car: - Had an exhaust leak in auction sheet but was claimed to be fixed by seller (bought from USA importer).  - Car's coil packs and sparks were replaced when it was sold to me, but unsure on what the gap is and whether the coil packs are correct.  - A prior mechanic had misdiagnosed a pilot or throwout bearing sound as LSPI/detonation. Had played with timing a bit, pops/raspy sound of engine just got worse. Got timing reset. - Had failed emissions a few times. First time went in as is, failed. Second time, replaced cat, still failed, running rich as hell. Third time replaced o2 sensor, passed. Car still smells gassy though. - Timing belt and valve cover gasket also replaced.  - Gas mileage is... low. about 350-400K per tank.  Any idea if I'm having any serious issues here or does this all sound like normal old NA RB stuff and I'm fine to drive it with the pops/slightly raspy engine? If it'll help, I can get drop a video of the sound of the engine.
