if as much time went into peoples jobs as what has gone into some of the posts on this thread, this mx5 would have been fixed and then some.

moral of the story....don't track what you can't afford to lose.

as for the donations, i appreciate that this is an unfortunate outcome for both car owners, but there are people in qld and vic that have lost far more than an mx5 due to the recent floods. where are the bbq's for those guys?

let's get a little perspective.

Uhhh... have you not heard of any of the charities like the Premier's Disaster Relief Appeal??

tk80,

I would never compare my personal issue to those ones. I have personally donated to both causes as it is important for community to always do our share to pitch in.

However, there are large organisations and government funds going into those causes. I'm not saying my issue is larger, only that perspective is needed. Also, I'm simply asking for those that feel they'd like to help. If you don't or cannot contribute that is fine. I welcome the moral support as well.

We are a community of car enthusiast. I hope I never have to organise another one of these, but if another club member were in a similar predicament I would definately be there to help them sort it out as much as I can.

I'm a late starter here but.

From the video it is very clear that the 300Zx could have avoided a 2 car crash and gone straight on instead of trying to make the turn...I too have run out of brakes there at turn 10....but brakes dont just give up the ghost...you will have a long pedal well before they just simply stop slowing the car.

As for the bloke saying Eric should have been going quicker ON THE ENTRY TO PIT LANE!!!...well that is a big steaming pile of horse shit...its a club track day, and a passenger session at that...not the wakefield 300...and lets not forget that the pit limit is 40km/h and wakie doesnt have the longest pit entry road.

Thunder - you say that Eric should have been more aware, yet you fail to mention that the driver of the 300 should have been more aware of slower traffic AND the fact that he had no brakes.

As for saying her went down to 1st gear...well at peak revs what speed is 1st gear? 60-70km/h he was doing way more than that

Unfortunate incident it may be, but it really should not have involved 2 cars.

Zebra, thanks for your concern but this gound has been covered again and again. I'm really having second thoughts that I should have followed my initial judgement about not posting the video until this story was farther progressed.

Please respect my wishes that we move on and progress this thread back to the journey forward from this unfortunate accident. Both Thunder and I agree that there is no changing what happened. We both have chosen how we will move forward.

Please everyone, cease the discussion on the what/who/could have etc about the accident.

CAR DOCTOR TO MAKE A HOUSE CALL

A forum member's father runs a smash repair near me. He has graciously offered to stop by on his way to work tomorrow to give me an assessment of the damage and what he thinks it will take to repair it.

I've got some parts lined up already but just don't want to drop the cash and effort to pick them up until I'm sure the car can be repaired.

With this development, I could be getting parts this weekend if the car doctor gives the OK! With only a week gone by I'm pleased with the progress.

I hope all goes well tomorrow. I'll keep you all posted.

If you can get your fire extinguishers to me I can get them refilled, or I can get you new ones.

Let me know either way and I will replace them for you.

As already requested by Eric, please DO NOT continue with the discussion and "blame game" as to who was or was not at fault. Any further posts along those lines will be deleted.

Let's concentrate on getting the MX5 back on the road at minimal cost and impact to Eric and his wife.

Thanks Owen, I do hope that Reece and Richard are ok too.

Hey folks, sorry I didn't really have much time this week to organise a fundraiser to co-incide with the cruise on Saturday. I contemplated doing a BBQ but short timing, logistics and the fact that I may need to run to start picking up parts just makes it a bit to hard to pull off. Let alone notify everyone to show up early for a snag.

I've got some planning in the works so you'll be seeing some kind of social events & fund raising coming up soon.

I appreciate the offer, pm sent.

yeah blame game was kind of exciting and dramatic but def time to move on, cruise is on 19th right? when is the raffle draw that is going off your chip in account? maybe at a BBQ cruise a fortnight after the cruise? that way peeps will get their donations in while emotions and sympathies are still running high.

Not to sound cynical but some will move on while your stuck with all that metal in your driveway, fingers crossed the car doctor gives you the thumbs up for some affordable repairs and we can get the ball rolling.

oh and hey when its fixed everyone who helped out should sign the old rear quarter before it goes on the clubhouse wall as a conversation piece/ artifact ?

To everyone that is worried about my health,

I am OOOKKKK

But seriously, I was just a little sore. And this accident hasn't put me off racing/track days. Just a reminder to remember to be much faster than everyone else :P

I would just like it if everyone could get behind Eric and his wife, as Eric does alot for the club, more than most and if this had happened to anyone if us, he would be first to donate, even though his car is in need of some cash.

One last thing, Eric has had nothing but respect for everyone involved and has been completely proffesional about the whole situation and the only person involved who has said sorry to me about the whole situation when he should be the last person to appolagise.

I am looking forward to the tropfest doco you're going to make about all this eric :P

PROGNOSIS FROM THE CAR DOCTOR

You know that look your doctor gives you when he has bad news? I could see the signs on his face before he even opened his mouth. Methodically he walked around the car inspecting panels and gaps between.

When he told me that the rear subframe has shifted, my heart sank. This is a convertable after all and took a big hit. You really can't blame the little car it did its best and has faired suprisingly well. But my amature eyes didn't find the small crease marks in areas of the boot floor. Phil graciously pointed them out to me and was kind enough to explain all the details about how it affects the total alignment of the car.

Well, this is a game changer for Project Wifie. I'll have to have a good think about it now. I will post up once I revise my plans.

Sorry to hear that mate, things will look up eventually though, they can't keep looking worse :D.

I wonder if that structural stressing a built in safety feature? Modern cars have insane amounts of effort put into their design so that as little damage as possible is done to the driver, at the expense of the car. Slight bright side might be that if creases like that hadn't formed you and Reece may be a lot worse off.

Sorry to hear about this incident - it one of those things you hope doesn't happen, also sorry to hear your little blue car may be terminal :(. I hope you can fix it - I know what its like to loose a loved one.

If the MX 5 is gone though, would that open room in your wifes heart for a skyline with a sunroof? I mean, I know its not a convertable but they certainly are cool. :)

Maybe an S15 convertable, or even one of the S13's you see around. If it helps, I'll come over with my oxy and take the roof off any car you like :)

Probly not what you wanted to hear but at least you now know where you stand and what needs to be done. It's amazing what someone with years of knowledge can pickup straight away. I dragged my Dad around when i was looking at buying my Skyline and he kept picking out things wrong with them. Took me nearly a year to find the right car. I didn't even see it at the time he just said on the phone "this is a nice car" and i knew that meant it was good.

Folks, still have a "Grand Plan". Just the distance between the goal posts is longer than I thought.

I'm an optimist and have always held true to the belief in possibility - you have to design your own destiny despite the obstacles that will appear in your path.

(Sitting here at work today with my iPod on, plodding through my database queries so I do have some extra capacity to multitask on this issue).

    • Throwing my spoon to the soup here a bit.  When I installed a 044 back in 2012, along with the direct power mod, the car became very difficult to start. To a point I burned one starter motor as I was late for work and tried to get the thing going. With some tuning and careful use of gas pedal when cranking it became bearable. Trying to make this short as possible, but the 044 died after 2-3 years, after which I went with an AEM 320lph pump, which also died after about 4 years to my dismay. After that I went with a Nismo pump, and while trying diagnose an emissions problem, I noticed for the first time that my fuel pressure was 5bar/72psi on idle, and that removing the vacuum line did nothing. After monitoring the situation, and removing the direct power feed and going back to FPCM in attempts to remedy it, I noticed there was fuel in the pressure regulator vac line. Kept the FPCM, installed AEM external regu and the car became sooo much better in every way, including starting. And I had driven it like it was for 11 years.. Anyway, I agree these are likely two different problems, and the FP problem you just haven't noticed before. I do not know much about haltecs, but what first came to mind was the CAS, which probably is not there any more. So how is the wiring from haltec to gauge cluster? How is the battery voltage and alternator?
    • Your car was auto before? You have different diff ratio (auto vs manual i think? or n/a and turbo?)
    • +1 for getting a screen off alibaba, CarPlay/Android Auto is vastly better than whatever navigation cars had 10 years ago. I got an Android screen for my 2015 BMW, huge difference. Fully compatible with factory stuff including iDrive controls.
