Chuck a tarp or thick plastic down, then a carpet remnant on top.

Carpet soaks up any big spills before they get to the tarp & go through any small tear or holes.

They're cheap as chips from your local carpet supplier, they've always got a few metres of some ugly arse carpet hanging around.

i roll out a piece of vinyl floor covering. its easy to clean so you can re-use it. its thick-ish so it always rolls out flat and its easy to slide under the car as well as pull yourself back out.

Im a big fan of the cardboard box...

a) im ghetto and never think about those things before i start working on something, so usually have a cardboard box lying around

b) they soak shit up

c) kinda comfortable in a weird S&M kind of way

d) put them out for recycling when done

:D

I agree with the cardboard box!

Go to a panelbeater and ask them if they have a bumper box lying around. I had a huge Ford box for a year or so before it was too stained to go on. Fold them out and they will nearly cover the entire floor under the engine :)

they also have rolls of carpet in the bin. just look for some vaguely clean stuff. jacks and creepers don't roll on carpet or cardboard very well. go the vinyl if you dont mind buying some, or can find some old stuff. try carpet place again, they should have something. depends how much of the floor you want to cover i guess.

If I need something bigger than my cut-down-office-water-cooler-bottle oil drip tray, then I've had too much to drink and shouldn't be under a car. Wanna know what keeps my garage floor clean? Skill.

lol

What you need is a product called flotex.

It is a short pile waterproof type of carpet used predominately in hospitals, nursing homes, kindergardens etc. Anywhere there could be spillage and needs hot water to clean it etc.

It has a synthetic rubber back and will let nothing through. comfy to crawl around on too.

Just hose it off to clean it as water has no effect on it.

And yes, I am in the trade.

Here's another random one, bunnings sells some floor protector mat stuff (in flooring section), comes in a big ish roll, its about 10mm thick rubber/foam stuff and has a sweet checkerplate pattern -> lol. also pretty cheap. Just another option if you don't want a bruised back from rolling around on concrete :/
