Hi everyone,

I've had my R33 gts-t for about 2 months now. It started off pretty well with no problems but soon after the car may occassionally stall when rolling up to the lights or if i'm pushing the car hard it'll kind of just cut out for a bit then keep going again. This seems to be more frequent as time goes by.

However, this morning the car would barely even start. I would turn the ignition, the car would start but with barely enough revs to keep the car going and it'll then stall. I pushed the gas and it jumped to life. But then when i started driving it the car just shut down even though i was pressing the gas. It wouldn't start.

Now i don't really know all that much about cars but can anyone help me diagnose the problem? Fuel pump? afm?

Your help would be much appreciated.

Eric

well for starters, turn the car on and let it idle for a bit, then unplug the air flow meter. then take your air filter off, turn the car on and start to cover up the air flow meter. cause mine has a leak somewhere, if i fully cover the air flow meter the car will still idle like normal. closely inspect all your intake pipes for even hairline cracks and splits.

as for the coil packs, unbolt the rocker cover case. the plug things with the clips in them are the coilpacks ha. hard to expain. check them for cracks down the shaft.

and also unclip your injector plugs and give them a little clean and clip them back in.

  • 2 weeks later...

Ok just as an update, on the weekend i cleaned the AFM and the AAC valve. This seems to have sorted out the stalling issue when i roll up to the lights. It idles very steadily at about 900rpm.

I then drove it for about 150kms, and it just stalled when i was driving. The dash lights come on. However, my hazard lights still work and stuff. It's quite scary. Anyway, i try turn on the car again a few times but it just doesn't want to start. If i take out the key and wait a bit i can start the car again. Does this mean that the problem is electrical? or is it the fuel pump?

Basically a CAS can be a Cam/Crank Angle Sensor it is used to know where the Cam/Crank is during it's rotation + speed. If its not working properly the motor is going to run like sh*t.

EDIT: have a read. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crank_sensor

Grab a copy of the FSM and look in the diagnostic section - run the ecu self diagnostics. It also has sections on how to test the cas, afm etc on voltages it should be producing and stuff. Grab a mate and a multimeter (and a carton.. haha) and get to work.

you could possibly undo the fuel line and see if its pumping fuel (while its doing the not starting thing) to rule out fuel pump issues. Changed fuel filter?

It does sound like the fuel pump can suit those symptoms though. when you take the key out and put it back in it will reprime the pump, effectively kickstarting it. so maybe it's failing - you have one to test replace with?
