SargeRX8
Post up guys. Feel free to chuck in why you do what. This is not a thread about should I, shouldn't I. Its just a thread for people to see what the majority are doing and probably their opinion as to why they are doing what they are! battery
has anyone tried doing this with an AFM? I'd like to do the same but in the cooler piping instead of the intake. R33shaun
Map sensor all the way, My AFM was maxing out even running stock boost (RB25/30). Got a link G4 installed and run the internal map sensor. now 12psi no dramas at all. SargeRX8
has anyone tried doing this with an AFM? I'd like to do the same but in the cooler piping instead of the intake. That is actually quite common. Ive read about it in the past. People with cracked AFM housings normally extract the housing components and fit them into metal pipes for strength and looks. I guess it wouldn't give any performance gain but if your housing is cracked/damaged it would be a great option rather than buying a new AFM. Also a small hole in a intercooler pipe is easier to patch up rather than a piece cut out. I was considering this approach if I do decide to run my AFM in the cooler pipe, just not confident on how resilient the Z32 parts are to vibration and knock from the tools. Wouldn't be hard to seal it imo. My brother has this black stuff in a tube which sticks literally everything automotive. battery
What setup are you planning to run Sarge? Im going highmount with the stock plenum so im thinking about getting a pipe like on Roy's car made up. The issue is where would be the best place to place the AFM considering the wiring and also I think the pipe will have to be 3" to make that AFM in pipe mod possible so ill probably need a reducer at the radiator join or do the entire cold side in 3"..... bored33
I went MAFless and will NEVER ever look back. So long as you trust your tuner and take care of your car. I guess high mount makes it a little more challenging if you're running the cooler piping in the standard location, unlike the image you posted. You also need to consider the wiring because the turbo will be way too close to the wires and the heat wont be good. A low mount setup, the wires will reach as I did do a trial fitment in my old car. I needed 2 3" to 2.5" reducers to sit the AFM between my piping. Really stupid move to upgrade the size of the whole pipe system without upgrading the throttle body to a larger unit. I'm going with AFM infront of turbo with metal intake pipe! I would have loved a MAP setup but I am not going to hunt down another ECU. scotty nm35
I run both, AFM signal till 2 psi then the MAP takes over. Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/357165-your-air-flow-management-system-poll/#findComment-5712040 Share on other sites
Touge Kyousou
Standard position with a z32afm, pod adapter one end and stock standard turbo inlet pipe on other end but with that reinforcement ring in it (to stop it sucking shut...which some people claims don't work). WYTSKY
z32 afm in the cooler pipe. always been happy with gtr bov, but it leaks on idle (found out when we installed it in the position of the turbosmart one) and because it was located too close to the afm it was causing problems, so we had to get something we could tighten extra hard with no leak on idle - so had to get the turbosmart - but didn't want anything wanky so it is part of the stealth range, can't hear it at all... but thats due to the screamer Downside is obviously this looks far from stock... upside is I have no issue of revs dropping when u get on boost and then clutch in and the car nearly stalls... another upside - if cooler pipe pops off before the afm I can still drive the car fine off boost. Beer Baron
meh, I run map sensor with a motec ecu in one GTR. the other GTR runs twin AFMs with trust hard pipe kit, the silvia runs Z32 AFM on a alluminium intake pipe to the turbo. all set-ups work fine. I honestly don't really have a prefference for one or the other, but I will say most tuners seem to be able to more consistently get better results with AFMs. I've seen so many map sensor cars running poorly it's not funny.
