is there nay reason why a r34 getrag gearbox wont fit into a r33 gtr?

Edit: just found the nismo conversion site. http://www.nismo.co.jp/en/products/competition/mission/getrag.html, has anyone tryed this? though it i could locate a box for a reasonable price it might be cheaper that a PPG or OS giken options

there is no reason, you will have to get the original cross member for the getrag ,the R34 rear tailshaft and the front tail shaft as the getrag is 20mm longer than a 5 speed.. it will bolt straight in, You use the R33 speedo drive it will work but the speedo will be reading incorrectly as the gearing in the R34 in higher.

sorta related. I was considering dropping one of these boxes into a R32 GTS4.

given that there are several things different about them vs the old 5sp I have

what needs to change in order to fit one to a 32 chassis

I know that:

32 has cable speedo drive

driveshafts are probably the wrong length

clutch is reversed.

unsure of:

ATESSA setup (34 vs 32)

rear crossmember mounting points

anyone done this?

Getrag 3.83:1

5 speed 3.214:1

Keep in mind that is just a quick search my mobile. Running 4.375:1 diffs in my car as well, so know how short first is already.

do you have a 6 spd in yours by chance? if so does the shift hole line up? ( I have just bought a full interior for my car and I'm not about to chop that up..)

No, currently have an old r32 spec 5 speed totally missing 3rd-4th synchro, with the gts4 4.375:1 diff ratios front and rear.

Have a brand new ser3 r33 box waiting to go in on monday so will finally get to experience what everyone else takes for granted (my gearbox was on its last legs when I bought it over 4 years ago).

I can't think of any reason why you would want to fit the 6 speed instead. 5th is the same as 4th in the 5 speed (ie 1:1), and the overdrive is about the same so you don't gain longer legs for distance driving. Just have to shift more often.

A bit better search revealed:

getrag ratios

1st 3.827

2nd 2.360

3rd 1.685

4th 1.312

5th 1.000

6th 0.793

r32/33

1st 3.214

2nd 1.925

3rd 1.302

4th 1.000

5th 0.752

Knock everything into a gearing calculator like this one http://www.boosttown.com/gearbox_differential/speed_calculator.php and see what you get. The getrag with 4.11's is shorter than the 5 speed with 4.375's.

Fitting a getrag was a fleeting thought, but the hassle and extra expense to end up with something that is a curiousity was not justified.

My mate did this in my shed a while a go.

It's possible but you will have to massage the firewall and gearbox tunnel.

We had a hoist, a hammer or two and around 4 blokes to fit it in coz I did not have a gearbox jack atm.

so how did it behave?

whilst I see the numbers above (and they make sense) what rpm are you doing at 100kmh?

ideally I would like to see mine at 2500ish in 6th. the idea I haev is a quick street car with highway driveability. current subaru with 4.44 rear/front diffs does it at 2800 with a 4spd auto.)

You could change to Stagea diffs (4.08:1 about the same as GTR at 4.1) to reduce your cruising revs. R34 GTR is 3.545:1 possibly a bit tall for you without a massive power increase (rb30/26 conversion!).

You have Subaru 4.44 ratios in your GTS4?? How did you manage to make them fit??

    • @soviet_merlin Thanks mate!  Nothing too major but will hold me up for a while. I've got lymphomas to get taken off the back of my neck and the middle of my spine which always conjures scary thoughts!  It sounds worse than it is. Yeah great, conjuring more rabbit hole deepening , just what I need! 🤣
    • I'd argue the F50 kit I got is very good value. For ~2k I got the calipers (refurbed condition), adapters, pads, brake lines, rotors, and top hats. I think you'd be pretty hard to get Evo/GTR/350z brembos + the additional hardware for similar money. Used market for a pair of front calipers alone I've seen tend to run anywhere from $1500-2000 depending on condition.    That said, something like a GTR or 350z brembo is a lot easier to adapt to the Silvia.
    • Is there a significant price difference between the Evo/gtr/350z brembos vs the F50? Looks amazing.
    • I was actually being a tightarse at the time LOL... My OCD is tickling me into running a 2nd 8AN Teflon hose all the way down and removing the 2x OEM hardlines. My other side of my brain is telling me to run 2x hardlines front to back (also acts as a fuel cooler, so win win).
    • As I mentioned in an earlier post, I had some trouble with the Silvia's brakes dragging back in 2023. I managed to sort it out then, but the same problem came back to bite me late last year. Just take a look at the picture – I had a feeling the handbrake was acting up again, and I was right. Anyway, I'd been wanting to upgrade to bigger brakes for a while. Not that the Silvia's brakes were bad, but it was more of a "want" than a "need", you know? It was funny, though – at the time, I couldn't find any Evo Brembos, 350Z Brembos, or GTR Brembos for a decent price (of course, tons of them popped up online after I already bought my kit!). I ended up going with an F50 Brembo kit, which came with adapters, brake lines, 330mm rotors, and top hats. The F50 Brembo caliper was used in a few other cars too, like the FPV. I also decided this was the perfect opportunity to ditch the Silvia's ridiculous rear brakes and that awful handbrake (some of you were definitely right about that!). I picked up some R33 calipers and all the necessary bits – rear drums, backing plates, and new hardware to refurbish the calipers. Of course, it wouldn't be a project without a few hiccups. Turns out the brake master cylinder was playing up and basically (to put it simply) keeping the brakes engaged. I had it overhauled, and after some adjustments, everything was working again. The whole process took a while, as you can imagine. To top it off, the front right wheel bearings were shot and needed replacing too. This is a rare occasion where I'm posting an update while it's all still fresh! These pictures were taken just this afternoon.
