Hey peoples,

Just had my car dynoed tuned at 168rwkw but had problems with the anti-knock sensor kicking in (Z32 ecu). The intercooler was struggling to keep the air cool. We would get a good run and then it would get hot and cause the anti knock sensor to kick in.

I am looking at installing an evo 1-3 front mount intercooler since it fits relatively well (won't have to cut away any bumpers) and it is relatively cheap. Has anyone here done this installation? Since I am new to this and will learn as I go, will I need to custom the intercooler pipes? or use existing/mitsi ones.

Yes, I have used the search and it doesn't have any threads from what I can see on installing evo intercoolers.

Mate I could probably get you a pic of an EVO 1 intercooler install (in an evo though :S) If it would help at all.

They are a good intercooler though and wouldn't struggle at all given the power output your looking at.

surely it would be easier to get a just jap bolt on kit to your suit car instead?

cost + time + mangling ??? it come out cheaper and easier with a bolt on kit

I was warned not to because I would have to cut my bumper etc, and it would make it a cop magnet. There are HKS and G-redy (whatever it is) kits for 1500-2500 lol. I'm looking at spending $500.

cheers,

This was a run with an auto, apparently if it was a manual I am told it would be doing around 190rwkw. I read somewhere the evo intercoolers were capable of up to 250kw.

The evo intercooler is a waste of time, get yourself one of the Just Jap Black Edition Stealth Intercooler Kits with black core and black pipes if you are worried about Police attention

Just jap return flow is your answer will cost more to fit the evo cooler with all the custom piping

Phoned mag and turbo warehouse in whangarei NZ and they have never heard of "Just Jap" brand of intercooler. Must be an OZ thing?

Sorry, I thought you meant a chinese one. I was warned not to get those.

yeah they are chinese core. check out their website. justjap.com

if you really don't want a chinese made core, then I would consider buying a 32/33 GTR core over an evo core. the GTR core is much better and being only 60mm thick you should be able to fit it fairly neatly. if you do go evo core or GTR core you are still going to need custom piping and it's expensive. there are lots of choices in kits out there, and if really on a budget buy a second hand kit.

What power are the GTR intercoolers capable of holding?

standard GTR intercooler is no real restriction at 300kw and plenty have been used with even more. once you get to 350kw or so it's a bit debatable as to whether or not they are a hindrance but certainly they are fine up to 300kw.

Just buy a yum cha spec cooler kit from eBay... GT-R core or Evo core, custom piping and all that schizzle will blow your budget. You're not running massive power so those cores are fine!

Look for HDi on eBay or Hybrid.

I am from NZ so trademe is the place 4 me :D.

But what if I decided to go into the 200+ rwkw? I don't want somethin huge but if I decided to go a little further then I don't want to have to buy intercoolers and parts all over again.

I can't tell if its a sales pitch or not but Mag and Turbo said I should get a G-redy or hks (1500-2500 bucks) kit since they are good quality. The guy reconed the cheap ones were only good for looks.

How would kits like these perform?

In my price range but I am guessing they are cheap for a reason? anyone had experience with kits like these?

well yeah the HKS and trust kits are good (though be aware the base model trust LS kits are now made in china). so are the blitz and ARC kits. but they are more expensive. the basic chinese intercoolers work 'ok' but they do have some negatives when compared to the better products. they still do the same basic job though and are much cheaper of course. where they sometimes fall over is with poor fitment. so if you're getting a workshop to fit it sometimes the initial cost saving gets eaten up by bigger install costs.
