Safc II Or Aftermarket ECU..?

13_Devil, i've only heard of going with a power FC for R33 because of the price and results. The knock sensor tells you when the fuel mixture is too lean and your engine starts to ignite prematurely. It should be taken care of by the wolf if it's any good. It will just flood more fuel into your engine when it leans too much.

For the power you're asking (around 225-235rwkw) you'll need a decent sized fuel pump and most likely a fuel pressure regulator if you want to keep your stock injectors (much cheaper!). At that kind of power you'll probably need Z32 airflow meter or something similar as your stock will max out. An SAFC-II should just be able to cope with this or an E-manage if need be. A power FC would be great, but you wouldn't get your full money's worth out of it unless you were going for around 250 or greater rwkw.

Steg33, i was reading that wolf3d does not required a aftermarket AFM, if i could push 250rwkw, i will try but i dont really want to rebuilt the engine in the future as i would more likly wish to upgrade the car to a gtr (if i can afford) or an r34 gt-t.

Rob - pull your head in... if you've got a problem with someone mention it to the mods or pm the person in question.... why read the thread by someone you're sick of anyhow?

sorry for the off topic but someone had to say it..

back on topic - if you want that much power man, you gotta go an ecu.. an safc just won't cut it.. also remember that the ecu is only as good as the tuner - so get something that is widely supported and that is supported well.. both the power fc and wolf have good support in Perth..

i have 2 choices on tuners, SST or Hyperdrive, heading 2words ken more cuz it is just down the road (god i am lazy) but might check out SST when i get the time

ffs this is a forum for discussion, believe it or not this is what they are used for. For sure sometimes people can use the "Search" function, and yes point taken. But how hard is it just to give a little advice without dropping the bundle and going nuts over it? 13_devil may be new but has a right to ask questions so I don't see any wrong doing??

Anyways, Mike your best bet would be to go the aftermarket ECU, something along the lines of a Wolf. However it all depends on your budget. I mean if your just looking for a quick temporary fix for your fuel maps then get the SAFC. You can easily buy one and sell it later on for close to what you paid for it anyways. $400 SAFC......or $2k+ for Wolf.

In the end its up to you.

And its about time someone said something about the eriktufa's and the 13_devil's of these forums, the search button exists for that pure reason.

Sorry Rob but I remember back when you joined these forums ... trying to get a 13 on stock turbo ... you asked HEAPS AND HEAPS of questions about how to do it.

Not once did someone say "use the search function". But you say it all the time. If it annoys you that much just don't read the thread.

I wasn't having a go at you at all ... I merely said that if someone is looking for some information why not help them out rather than get all narky and tell them to search for it. As I said people helped you out so why not return the favour.

13_devil: I had an SAFC2 in my car. Once I had it tuned I didn't make any more peak horsepower, but I felt a hell of a lot more midrange. Can recommend it if you don't want to go to the expense of going a full aftermarket ECU.

I've helped him out in the past and dealt with several of his questions, I just dont see the point of asking a simular question in a different way about what we have already discussed between himself, paul and I. I find it an insult to be honest as it shows the person has no respect for what I have said, or just simply wasnt listening. Now I think its time this thread was closed.

Your or Pauls words aren't gospel mate, get off your high horse and let him ask his questions. In these situations regarding management everythings different; whether he's running different injectors or AFM's, different turbos, different requirements eg antilag, call it a technique of distinguishing if you will, the facts are dissimilar to possibly those that have been in the search

As people has suggested - if he or his threads annoy you, don't read them

If you want to have a go at me do it in a PM and not in this thread.

Hi 13_devil, Steve-SST is right. You have a power target that is in excess of what anybody would recommend for tuning via fuel only. Which is what an SAFC does, it modifies the signal from the AFM to fool the ECU into thinking there is less airflow (this leans out the mixture) or more airflow (this richens the mixture).

An SAFC does nothing for correcting the ignition timing, in fact I have seen cases where it actually does the wrong thing. An example, if you have somewhere in your RPM range where the mixtures are too rich. The SAFC can be adjusted to have the ECU lean this out by telling the ECU that there is less airflow, so it reduces the amount of fuel. The A/F ratios are now good, but what happens to the ignition timing? Well the ECU thinks there is less airflow (than there really is) so it advances the ignition timing to what the ignition map says is correct for that (lower) amount of load.

In my experience that's too far advanced quite often, so I have 2 choices. Either, retard the static ignition timing, which affects all rpm ranges. Even though it might be OK at some RPM's and even (already) too retarded at others. Or, compromise on the A/F ratios and balance it out so I get close to what ratio I want, but don't affect the ignition timing too much.

As you increase the amount of power and/or boost this "compromising" just gets worse. That's ignition, you also have the problem of boost mapping, idle stability, load correction for air con, power steering, electrical load, etc etc

    • Just out of interest, did you check the "ENG CONT" fuses in the engine bay fuse block? I had a very similar issue to this with my Link, and those 2 10a fuses were blown, so ecu was only getting 9~v, whilst having 14v supplied to the rest of the vehicle.  Likely not the problem, but just thought id make the suggestion after having a similar problem.
    • Am I correct in thinking that even if you flat a rear, you'll have to fit the spare to the front anyway? I'm thinking that the LSD will thank you for not inflicting a massive permanent speed difference on it.
    • Time for millspec wiring, MoTec electronics package, Bosch Motorsport ABS, let's goooooooo!!!   Maybe as @MBS206 suggested, just swap out those stupid blue relays near the ECU plug.  
    • My only regret with the NC MX5 was no space for a spare, even a space saver doesn't fit in I do have a couple of those puncture repair spray cans, but if I get a large puncture, or sidewall damage, I'm screwed until a tilt tray turns up I'm thinking I might get one of those 4WD style of puncture repair kits that have that rope stuff and glue, whilst it will kill any hope of saving a tyre, it might help getting me out from some backwoods road far enough to find a actual tyre shop if the first can of tyre fix doesn't work I'm keen to see how your new toy pans out Uncle Duncan, I'll be moving to the Highlands next year, you'll need to shout out if your heading to Wakefield, whilst I've lost my balls for happy laps, I still love watching those that can
    • Yeah not sure what the warranty was, but it will be years outside it.  I've shot Link a message, will see what happens, I'm told their support is good. It is a plug in, so its a Link board in a factory case, very easy to access both sides of the circuit board by removing the top or bottom cover. To be fair the the Link, although I've checked to the factory connections and wiring specs, as we learned with Neil's car in the early days not all ECUs source power the same way. He'd been running a factory ECU with no trouble for years, but when we plugged a PowerFC in it wouldn't start up, just kept cycling power on and off. We worked out that the car was missing one of the 10a fuses "Electronic Parts", and to Neil's knowledge it had never been there. Turns out the ECU pulled its main power from that source not the same place the factory ECU did.  Point being....there are multiple battery and ECCS power sources in the factory ECU, and multiple grounds as well....not telling from the outside exactly what the Link uses (and doesn't use)
