Hey all,

Does anyone here install cluches or know of places to install my clutch? My clutch should be ready by wednesday/thursday and it will have the flywheel with it too which is machined. I think it comes with the throw out bearing or what ever its called, I'm not too sure yet. Only thing I don't have is the seals as I don't know which ones(if any) I need to replace.

If I could get my car high enough I would do it my self but I don't think that is likely.

If anyone here in Sydney does clutch installations or knows of any places who don't charge my wallet, that would be great. Lube mobile quoted me $620 to do an on site clutch change. I assume this would be the highest cost so everything else should be less!

Cheers guys.

Oh and car is an R33 GTST.

I got quoted over $700 for a change on my r34 once.

Have a search in the nsw section for goos skyline mechanics, there are plenty in sydney. Just don't take it to someone who hasn't been recommended or they might fk it up, happened to me.

r34 clutches are pull type not push, different removal procedure. The mechanic I took it to didn't know that or that it was an important difference. He's been in the industry for 30 years and assured me that he'd done the job many times.

Point is, if you pay a little more to get it done right you'll be so much happier than going for cheap, them stuffing it up then then stuffing you around.

33 clutches are easy. It takes me roughly 3-4 hrs depending oh how much of a bitch the bolts are, this is on the ground. It would be half with a hoist.. most places charge 4-500 for a clutch and u won't need to replace seals if its not leaking

alright... i'm gonna give it a shot, if anyone reads a headline of "man crushed by gearbox in own driveway" you will know how it went.

So for those who know, whats the process?? disconnect the drive shaft, drop the great box and go to work?

Also, are their any consumables i should look at replacing while i'm at it (figure i'll do my gear box oil again whilst its easy to get to the filler hole).

And last of all, i should probably machine the fly wheel too no? if so is pulling the fly wheel fairly straight forward? and anyone know of a place in sutherland shire who do good work?

Tail shaft comes off, starter motor comes off, loosen all the electronic senders, undo bellhousing bolts, slide her back a little and drop her down.

You're gonna need new seals. There is a lower one, and some rear one. Theres a few more and a complete kit cost into the hundred or two region. I don't know much about the seals so I cant say. Might as well change the fluid.

If the clutch is different to your old one you probably need it at least shimmed to get the old material off so your new clutch can lay its new material on. Air wrench is good here, or a telegraph pole as a breaker bar. I think these are tighted to about 150 torque and loctite. You're gonna need loctite when putting them back on too. I still havent got my clutch or heard from the guy who is making it. I hope it comes soon because I really need to get my shit onto the car.

righteo... found the seal kit for 103 at kudos... so thats a start... i'll try and do a little more digging myself now aswell, cant seem to find a clutch section in engine manual so i might go searching elswhere.

that said, always happy to listen to any ones advice so feel free to keep it coming.

    • Well some mostly good news and some slight bad news.  Good news is cylinder 6 did in fact only require a honing and I'm good to run my 86.5mm pistons again. I should also get the block back by end of week. Bad news, had a few surprises pop up. First, main and rod bearings were trashed. No sign of any heat damage. I knew right away what caused this... I had not packed my oil pump originally and spent a lot more time than I would have liked cranking the motor to get oil pressure. It sounded fine once started so I chucked it up to luck and forgot about it. Luckily rod and crank are fine and just need new bearings. Engine builder agreed that this was the cause.    Another surprise that carbon covered up very well that I didn't catch, something got sucked up and went through cylinder 1, 2 and 3. Luckily this was no cause for concern, just needed a bit of cleaning up. Valves look fine but he will vacuum test the head this week to confirm. I'm presuming this was something left over from welding my intercooler piping, but we'll never know. I'm going to thoroughly reclean everything.    So all in all, happy the motor is fine, and I'll get it back much sooner than expected. I'll also be taking the time to convert my WMI system over to direct port. I'll snap some pictures of that when the parts come in.
    • I understand, thanks. Yeah I wouldn't want the car to tip over, I'll try and use the sills, I don't want to risk smashing the chassis rails. I ordered some rubber pucks that have a hopefully big enough slotting. If the front right gives me trouble I can always just make a wood block. I'll measure and inspect the sills closer once I actually take the car up. I hope so, but the rubber blocks I had in hand so far were pretty damn firm, if they are that hard they won't give much way. I'll let you know what happens. Angle grinding rubber isn't one of my favorite tasks. I'll probably start a build thread soon, for my own documentation and "log" as well as sharing what's going on with the car.
    • Kinda something I have been thinking about.  To be honest, we bought it already driving like that.  So there's no telling how long it actually has been driving like this.  Hopefully damage is too bad when we drop the pan.   I am having a hard time finding a site that sells the solenoid for the 5 speed auto, do you have any suggestions?
    • That'll be most likely down the road...  LOL
    • a stock / option or aftermarket?
