That was the main appeal of this setup over the old. Changing wastegate springs now would be a 20min job, changing on the old setup would be 2 days at best lol...

We will run the car as is simply to get seat time, biggest thing holding the car back is my lack of seat time due to so many niggly reliability issues... Hopefully we continue to eliminate those through the year and really get some bulk laps done through 2023... 

No point blaming the car or the combination until I give it a fair go!

The EFR sounds good, looks good and goes good but if I can't swing spanners on it easily being a track car then I'll be better off with the changes I have made! Whoeever buys that combo will get a killer deal on a system that is good to go! I didn't notice anything to rave about with the EFR compared to previous turbos but I guess I never really got a good crack at it either... The last run with the EFR wasn't that long ago and we are going back to the same track so it will sort of be back to back if the conditions are right!

Racepace has a G30 770 1.01 result coming soon on a race car with the same engine combo so I will have something to compare to with that thing as well, keep an eye on their socials as I would assume they will post results. They've been really helpful and suggested the G30 but I took a punt on the G35 for now.

Again be interested in hearing your thoughts, be the first person I know who has gone from a G-series to an EFR or vice versa.  

I hardly follow Racepace as they seem to hold back info, sometimes showing a dyno plot but not sharing spec - or vice versa, and thats the main interesting stuff :D.  For some reason they never posted the dyno plot for an RB28/VCam/G35-900 setup they did so I'm not assuming they'll share the G30 one either.

Mine won't be anything special as it will be on gate springs and low boost pressure compared to most running them!

It's not a choice I made based on performance as I was happy with the EFR as it was, it was purely for practicality as I built the 34 to do bulk laps and it is certainly hasn't had the chance to do that!

I'm keen to see how it goes but also nervous as I made the decision last minute as time pressure got the better of me! Decision was made on the turbo last week and the car will probably be on the dyno next week and then straight from dyno to the track so with fitting and fabwork I didn't give myself much time to mess about.

I will be upgrading my ECU later in the year so a tune will need to be done again anyway so if there are any concerns its not the right choice I can easily swap it over at that time without much fuss!

we could always potentially swap turbos down the track if it doesn't have the response you were chasing 😜

Though the more i drive mine the more i like it... 🤪I'm back on the dyno this Friday to see if we can turn things up a little now the alternator is upgraded...

I'm sure mine will be fine, should be nothing I can't learn to drive around on track and get good results!

Initially we will just dial in a tune to get it on track but I'm sure we can tweak things are required in the future.

I'm not sure the G30 is a good idea for a dedicated track car even though the response is appealing!

Been super busy getting things sorted on the car and so far so good.

Heat coating is not done yet so will hopefully get it tuned and running and then once the local place gets time I'll get the dump and rear housing down to them to do. Was considering doing the manifold as well at the same time as there is no word yet on an ETA of their manifold blanket thingos.

Cosmetically there is a bunch of stuff to clean up including the gate line plumbing but I recycled all of the original lines and although I had olives to re-do the lines I wasn't sure where I wanted everything to sit just yet so ghetto spec for now.

The focus is to get it running and then improve as I go, I'll make sure any track work it does will be short stints with plenty of cool off time until I get the heat coating sorted as the heat radiating off everything is amazing compared to the old coated setup!

Now that everything has a coat of paint slapped on it it doesn't look as bad as it did. Still room for improvement.

Car is bled and serviced and ready for a low boost touch up tune for now.

The goal is to just get it running on gate springs or a low boost setting for now as I am planning on changing the ECU once I sell the old turbo setup and have the funds to do so. At that time I can then get the thing wicked up a bit.

Not sure what to expect but you will all know soon enough...

An artsy manifold pics after a trackday heat cycle...

Have only run the car on track at around 1 bar at this stage so nothing exciting to report... Turbo and manifold combo really gives the car an RB note that it was missing with the fancy EFR setup.

First impressions of the G35 are good! Will run it again this weekend at the same boost as the EFR to see how it compares.

20psi on the EFR was roughly 405kw and 20psi on the G35 is 415kw so same same with curve above 4000rpm near identical. Under 4000rpm the EFR would kill it in a street application but on track so far I think the G35 is a winner.

Very promising feedback, especially the EFR setup you had was a twin scroll setup, vs. this in an open configuration.

Makes the decision easy for many in future hopefully.

Part of me wants to upgrade to G35-900 now 😂

Awesome, was hoping it'd end up something like that, sounds probably like similar spool/response (and probably not miles off the flow) of an EFR9180... which is perfectly acceptable on a 2.8litre track car, especially with variable cam timing.   Glad it's working out so far.

Yeah, the single scroll setups definitely have a particular sound to them and the G-series aren't too bad with transient response compared to the GTx series Garretts and especially Precision turbos so while you're giving away response that you could have with an EFR it's not really likely to be a problem.    As you said above, for a street car it'd be where it really makes a difference - like the EFR8474 doesn't sacrifice any flow over a G35 900, or noticable response over a EFR8374 buuuuuuut doesn't have the packaging and flexibility (or sound) advantages your new turbo have.

Look forward to seeing an overlay to see how things go when you wind it up!

A simple single scroll, single gate and dirty big Garry are more than enough to get me into trouble and with the added boost we will run in time it will be more than I can handle as a driver anyway.

The sound was something I was missing and tried to fix with the T51r mod on the EFR but the G35 sounds that way from factory so that was also a win! Inside the cabin I can now hear the exhaust note and it helps with judging RPM as I don't look at the dash (Not at Pheasant Wood anyway as you would very quickly find yourself in a concrete wall lol).

So far so good. More updates to follow once I get some boost in it and more seat time.

Street car = Buy my old setup and be happy forever... TS and EFR was killer for that

Yeah 100%, glad it seems like its working out well so far - this kind of thing is 100% a thing I've been viewing the G-series range as having some advantage over.  Also have a soft spot for the "single scroll RB sound", and a gripe I've had about the EFRs are how messy things end up having to be to run twin scroll and also the busy comp housings.   

Look forward to seeing how further meets go and if some more comparative data (like are you likely to get a dyno overlay?) would still be interesting.

Round one of the CSCA Supersprints done and dusted!

Was a wet and windy day for the most part with most of our sessions raining. We got one dry session where the wind created a semi dry line on track that last for a few laps but quickly got greasy again as soon as the rain started again. There was an oil slick from the bottom of the hill all the way to the pits where a poor old escort lost his oil filter seal. The oil created an odd racing line but it did the job anyway.

AR1s were really difficult to get pressure and heat into on the wet sessions which was unexpected, I thought being a soft tyre and a heavy car they would switch on well but turns out I was wrong! I really enjoyed the wet and slippery conditions as the cars balance is finally on point with all of the rear suspension changes and the visit to DNA Autosports so it was a handful but a lot of fun.

This footage shows those few semi dry laps and then how quickly the grip went away with a bit of water, nothing exciting to watch but I am loving the new G series combo - 

 

This was run again on the 16/17psi gate pressure setting and I wasn't letting the revs go past 6000rpm so the thing was hardly on boost as it turned the tyres very easily. Its days like this that made the EFRs epic response a negative and the TS setup being as complicated as it is I can't easily just change to a smaller gate spring for the day. A lot of people have asked why I would give away the low end response after spending all of the money to get the combo built... This is a perfect example of why the change was justified for a dedicated track car.

We plan on running the full CSCA series this year and RD3 is on the 1/4 mile which I will be running and not changing the car configuration so lets see how we go putting 400kw onto a drag strip with all that camber in the rear lol

We made a last minute decision to run the Toyota 86 at a lapdash event at Tamworth - Oakburn Park Raceway.

It was a little Go Kart track so we left the 34 at home and head off for a long weekend! Was a great place and I'll likely head back out there later in the year for a Tri Series event which combines your 3 lap times from a standing start.

We ran the car on Zestino 07rs front tyres which are pretty grippy and decent! The rears were near dead Zeknova 240tw street tyres that are the eveready or tyres - Never say die! The balance of the car is really ordinary with this setup but makes it more entertaining to drive!

As usual the little reliable FA20 made terrible fart noises all day but punched above its weight and handled the small tight track easily! We did knock a coilover loose for the last few runs but still kept knocking times down! Fastest run of the day was in the untimed practice at the end but was also cheating as the tyres were hot from back to back runs lol

There were some cool cars out there with a WTAC Evo, Aussie Race car, Cool old Datto, Sports sedans etc... If you see the lapdash events advertised on MA's entry section I recommend heading up for a look as they are a great bunch of guys and its a good facility for a bit of fun.

Next weekend the Toyota is back out at the local Hillclimb track - Ringwood Park Raceway... Round 3 of our local comp on track layout A4 which is a lot of fun!

I chose not to record any Go Pro footage of the 86 as a figured nobody had time to listen to that sound! 😂

The R34 will have the hotside removed for heatcoating ASAP so it can then be put back together and be good to go for the next track day. Round 2 of the Supersprints isn't until June so we may look for something sooner if possible.

This weekend was Round 3 of the MGCCN Tar Series at Ringwood Park.

The track layout was Track 4 which is tight and technical and the little 86 handles it well.

We ran the car as it ran in Tamworth and didnt bother raising the pressures back up, rookie error!

Run 1 was slippery as fk at around 75sec

Run 2 was better but still sketchy with 72.5sec

Run 3 was getting better again with a time of 71.5sec

Run 4 pissed down with rain as we were heading up to line up so slowed back to an 81 sec run but was fun!

Screwed up the Go Pro footage on 2 parts by running the 34 Cage mount on the 86 which makes it low and can't see over the dash and then also forgot to focus it anyway! The front old Go Pro 3 got a bit of front bar footage so made a crappy video just for memories sake, if you don't like the sound of wet farts you can use the mute button :rofl:

Just saw this video on your YT channel, looks like the Garrett G35-900 is a great match for your setup!

Barely even making your way into the red in 3rd at PWC, looks like a touge like circuit.

Yep the turbo combo has been killer so far!

I've been running 1 bar this year as its been all tight tracks or wet weather so the lower power setting has been a savior there as I would have had no chance with the 400+kw setting!

I did try 20psi at Pheasant Wood for a couple of laps but the rear of the car was trying to overtake the front on the straight :rofl: Will save that setting for bigger tracks me thinks! On 20psi the car pretty much mirrored the EFR with 417kw from memory, however the seat of the pants feel made the G35 feel a hell of a lot sportier once it was on song (Makes no sense but felt stupid quick for the brief hit I gave it).

Next outing for the R34 is Round 3 of the CSCA Supersprints at WSID on the 1/4 mile which will be kind of pointless with over -3 camber and half baked AR1 tyres but gunna lick the stamp and send it anyway :D

We've done alright in the series so far so may as well keep rocking up and having a crack! Have managed a 2nd and 3rd outright finish on the tight tracks but keep getting picked on by Lotus's and bloody Hondas! Will need to return the favour once the RB can stretch its legs on North Circuit and GP Circuits at SMSP for Rounds 4 & 6.

The GT86 fart box has also been out at the local hillclimb track for Round 4 of the Tar Series championship. We missed RD1 as we were in Tassie but so far in Rounds 2,3 & 4 we have managed a 1st and then two 3rds in class which isnt that bad for a mostly stock FA20 engine - 

 

I really suck at Go Pro footage and need to work out the settings to avoid the sun glare... Any advice?

We had it stuck on Hypersmooth since Tamworth which was 💩 and I also kept mixing the R34 and GT86 mounts up so had the wrong heights and positions! I will aim to get a permanent mount for both cars to resolve that issue but need to sort the settings so the footage actually shows something other than farkin dashboard!

We may also have further updates for our little team with another addition to the fleet potentially coming soon... Not the smartest thing to do but if we gunna send ourselves broke in race cars we will certainly go down in a blaze of glory :devil:

Saw the video and looks like a great little track.

With the glare I have found mounting the camera a bit higher up and slight tilt down helps a lot.
I'll link a video I used to set my gopro up and my setting are under it for In Car, I use a different settings for out of car.

Will give it a go next time I am out as the last few track days the footage has been rubbish in both cars.

I'll also try some different angles and positions on the car at some point once I get a chance to play with camera stuff and not just swinging spanners trying to keep the cars together for the day lol

Also, the little project car we are looking at is from up your way... Noticed the windscreen sticker and seen in mentioned in old mates videos... Will see how it goes and update here next week!
