well, this should get the enthusiasts breathin heavy........

looking to see if anyone has converted a GTR to RWD ONLY, so not talking about removing the fuse.

Removing the diff from the sump, all front drive shafts and plating up the transfer case, remove all altezza lines and pumps etc. Obviously there is a very large weight advantage, but no 4wd....

I realize that the most response i will get here is, don't wreck a gtr, and why would you bother, but I'm more interested in the positive sides to it, if anyone has a link to some cars done or a build thread or anything. I realize this has been done before and its not exactly breaking the ice, but there is very little on the net about it, trust me i've searched lots.

Think of it as a better looking wide body gtst with rb26,

larger brakes

alloy front end

stronger 2 way diff

bit better seats etc

i DONT want to get into the "whats better a GTR or GTST":thumbsup:

running a rb26dett in a r32 gtst sedan, rwd. obviously not the same, but ..............

track only car. weakest point in mine would be the gearbox.

i know a lot of ppl have done it, personally though if I had an awd gtr I wouldnt change it to rwd.

have an awd 250akw stagea and love the awd handling; never want a fwd/rwd road car again!

i think there is some merit it but most wouldnt bother

you get the extra looks of the GTR

you get ITBs with twin turbo

you get less weight than GTR

you get the extra guages, interior differences etc, gtr badging

you get working air temp correction

are you after lap times? if yes then I wouldn't ditch the 4WD... unless your going the whole hog and completely stripping it, adding aero and running on slicks, maybe then it might pay off... maybe

if just for fun I say do it:)... I have avoided dropping the front shafts in mine cos I'm not sure I'd ever put them back in hehe... they're a really front heavy old bus and any way you can remove some of that weight is only going to make it more rewarding to drive... it just won't make it faster!

well it's not very hard. don't remove your "altezza" though. lol.

simply remove the front diff and replace with a RWD diff (might need adapter) or just cut off the sump part and weld it up. remove front drive shafts and front prop shaft, might need to modify hubs with no driveshaft in them. cut off transfer case and weld it, remove the ATTESA computer, wiring, pump and resevoir (need to look at any impact on ABS though, perhaps remove ABS too if you want).

The problem is though once you do that there is not much in the car that is any better than a GTST. so you'd probably be better off just starting with the GTST and do a 26 conversion. I mean yeah the brakes are better but by bugger all (296mm rotors vs 280mm rotors -callipers the same) and even for a RWD GTR they would be under-braked for any kind of serious driving. sure it has alloy bonnet and guards but they are easy to get or get carbon, same goes with bumper etc (can get a fibreglass one which is lighter than standard and cheap). interior is easy to get and cheap, the only hard bit would be the rear guards.

the real problem is the car would be pretty traction limited. have you driven a powerfull GTR in RWD mode? it's an experience full of on-boost wheelspin at pretty much any legal speed.

but by all means if you really want to do it then go ahead. it's not been done very often cause it's not a good idea. if it was you'd see dozens of RWD GTRs out there because it's certainly not hard to do.

See above - there are a range of other benefits you get.

However, after thinking about it most of that stuff (diff, alloy guards, bonnet, brakes etc) would be much easier to retrofit to a GTS-t.

IMO the only real challenging part would be transferring across the pumped rear guards to the GTS-t, and you are going to need them b/c you will want some seriously wide rear wheels.

Lastly I think it would be far, far easier to get an engineer to sign off on a r32 GTS-t with an rb26dett fitted (and brake/diff upgrades) than to sign off on a GTR with the 4WD and god knows what else disabled. That is based on the assumption that legality matters - if track only then clearly it doesn't.

You can easily buy the guards and so on. It's really a non issue and they don't cost too much.

A 33GTS-t for example - sells for what, 10-12k less than a 33GTR in most cases (yes this is general)

You'll spend MORE getting a GTR to RWD than you would putting a 26 into the GTS-t and upgrading brakes and so on.

So end of the day you spend more, for the same result. That makes it rather pointless.

yeah my r32 sedan with rb26dett cost me under 7k.

all up fully rebuilt 87mm bottom end, ported head with cams, half-cage, brake upgrade, fuel system upgrade, slicks, track ready cost is around 20k.

But they did what the barron talked about, they cut the sump apart and welded it back up.

you sure about that? got a quote on putting GTR rear guards on a GTSt?

not just the front guards and bonnet but the front bar as well... then respraying the lot

also interior, dash, seats etc

(I'm thinking 33GTR tho, not so sure about 32)

the 26 will need to be upgraded while your at it... whilst most GTR's you would start with would already have the turbos changed etc

for me to build up a GTSt to the same spec as opposed to removing the 4WD from my car wouldn't even be close

yeah it's a bit of work to fit 32 GTR quarters to a 32 GTST but not impossible. fairly straight forward for any competent smash repair place. but sure it's probably the hardest bit of the conversion. and yes you want guards to be able to run big wheels and tyres. though even standard GTR guards can't swallow HUGE tyres.

Same thing happens when you pull the front diff out of a GT-R.

One thing worth mentioning is 32 gtr's are very cheap these days, some very much so, $11-13K, while these may not be the 'best' gtr's to buy, people do stil purchase them.

When you look at the costs to do conversions, they normally blow out of the water. converting gtst to rb26 etc.

Once you drive a gtr you will understand why its a good thing its AWD.

When starting my track car build this idea came up and after discussing it for afew pages with the motorsport dudes on the forum. its just not worth it for the gains you get you might aswell just strip the shit out of the gtr as that will be alot cheaper and you will save way more weight.

however i still stand by my signature that real race cars are rwd, guess im just a girly man

I think it's a great idea.

Also the suspension is lower and a few joints are stronger, steering more direct and less deflection that GTST.

If you just want a RWD RB26, the GTST option is definitely much cheaper.

I know on my R33 GTST, i've spent a lot of money on GTR seats front and rear, new front bar, bonnet, grill headlights etc and mine isn't even widebody yet. I'd much rather a RWD GTR over a engine swapped GTST!

    • Thanks again, really helpful chap from alpha omega wanted to speak to me, little concerned if this is meant to he aero alloy/ airospace quality and car sitting on drive has caused this.  Airplane are subject to much more changing temp and conditions than road salts! My caliper, many other components much older have surface rust but never eating part of the metal   Had I not seen it , could have been a disaster! specifically on rear part of bracket coming off like biscuit will update on what they say, helpful people so far

    • The MX5 has had some annoying rattles in both front doors over bumps So I installed fancy pants door bushings, which stopped all of the rattles with the windows up, but........with the windows down there was still rattles, so after some googling,  and a chat with MX5 Mania, I got some new door to glass weather seals, all the rattles, windows up, or down, are gone now Shout out to MX5 Mania, the weather seals were on sale, and when I head to Dural to pick the up they even fitted them for me for free I did see a "really" nice Blue NA sitting out front   and this Black NC PRHT that looked like it has sat in the sun for its whole life and never had a wash, the clear coat was non-existent, an it looked horrible, really horrible, but, it had a nice turbo kit with over 200kw, the thing went like a cut snake, bagging the rears through the gears and dosing like a champ 😍 But, as I've always stated, I am keeping my NC na, I'm happy with the current power the car makes In other news: MX5 Mania do a drive in drive out turbo kit, the only minor additional part recommended for boosting my car, as it sits now, is a oil cooler, and that bonnet vents are definitely required for track use Aftermarket version look a bit to "racecar" spec I wonder how Focus RS bonnet vents would look?????
