Ideally the front suspension allows easy extension of the shock, and harder contraction. This allows the front end to "stay up" and put more weight over the rear. The rears are to do the opposite, that is compact easily yet have more resistance on the extension - to allow it to stay "squatted" for a longer period of time. Shock absorbers and their valve setup are pretty important.
