Size Rims/tyres For Track Work

Hey,

Interested in doing more track work with my r32 GTST. (200kw atw~)

Would like to hear what is the best wheel/tyre setup for track work.

Options I can think of for rims:

- r32 GTST rims - 16x6.5

- r32 GTR rims - 16x8

- r33 GTR rims - 17x9

- Second hand aftermarket jap brand rims under $800~

Which rims would be best choice for light trackwork (in terms of cost)?

Also, what would be best size semi-slicks for the best choice?

I would get the 32 gtr rims over gtst rims cause they are forged (stronger and lighter) and the 225/50 16 tyre size is still common and relatively cheap, but 235/45 17 is quickly taking over and also offers more grip so the 33 gtr wheels are a decent option but will cost more of the bat. The $800 jap options can be good but you really need good offsets and it is cheaper to run same size/offset front to rear just for the ability to rotate. You prob won't get as good wheels as the factory gtr stuff as they are forged and the perfect offsets

agreed.....but I would probably take the 33 gtr wheels if they fit under the guards.

17x9 is a good size for semi slicks, plenty of options between 235 and 255/17.

and the factory rims are strong and light.

When I first started to get into track work i got a set of r32 gtr wheels. However I now want something in a 17x9 for the extra width and smaller side walls of the tyres. If I had my time again I would go for this size from the start. Personally I want an after market jap branded wheel as the r33 gtr wheels are a fair bit heavier than most of the aftermarket stuff and priced similarly. That being said, plenty of people do really well using the 33 gtr wheels, just look at Russ's r32.

Don't bother with 16's. Not much cost saving.

Should get a set of 33 GTR rims, lip the guards and get 235 or maybe even 245. They're forged and quite light, probably lighter than most. I think I weighed them at about 11kg's?

I had to pump my guards a bit to make 245's fit.

Should get some for about a grand. sometimes less.

With semi's are you willing to spend $2k or just like $900- $1k for KU's / RS-R's? I can recommend starting with 2nd hand semi's.

forget the GTST wheels. 16X6.5 is useless. 32 GTR is ok, but far better off just getting the 17X9 33 GTR wheels. they are good size and offset for a 32 GTST and take a 235/45/17 semi slick (like A050, DZ03G etc) very nicely and 245 or 255 will fit too (255 semi is a little big on a 9, but 255 road tyre is perfect). yeah they are not super light, but they are very strong and will take plenty of curb pounding etc. and they are by no means 'heavy'.

Thanks for the comments guys. Was planning on getting some second-hand semis to go on the tyres. Nothing hardcore, just something to start on.

Im afraid the 17x9 +30's will probably scrub quite bad on the fronts with the sydneykid suspension setup. Its quite soft to the point I had scrubbing issues on 17x8's +30 w/ 235/45 road tyres.

Would need to raise the car quite high if the recommendation is 235 semi's on the 17x9's

Also fair to say that 235/45's are a common second hand semi size? Probably easier to find second hand sets over the r32 gtr sizes...

yeah 235/45/17 is common in all tyres new and used. for semis plenty of cars run 235 semis in national and state comps.

if your suspension is really that soft it may not be ideal for track use with semis anyway. might need to look at getting them revalved and with some higher rate springs to control pitch and roll a bit better.

with normal suspension and average heights 17X9 +30 with some 235s on them should be fine on the front of a GTST.

i started with r32 gtr wheels (and i'm still a huge fan of 32gr wheels) for club day stuff, and can say they are probably going to be your lightest option, and they are extremely strong, 225 50 16 tyres are fairly easy to find, ku36 are cheap in that size, and if you call around you will be able to find used semi slick tyres.

i have flared guards on my car and have recently decided to get 17 inch wheels to use on club day's only because there are wider sizes available.

i'd like to start using 245-255 on the rear of the car to help with rear grip (and realistically help to mask the handling floors in the setup )....

i have my 32 gtr wheels up for sale (ideally i'd love to keep them for the sake of it but space doesn't permit) with some used semi slick rubber that has enough meat for a few days out.

you're welcome to come and try them on, but, at the same time if you plan to increase the cars power you will probably decide to run wider rubber at some point down the track which inevitably will mean getting a set of 17's to suit

I have circlip height adjustable Bilsteins with King Springs fitted on the car currently. Might be able to get away with scrubbing if i raise the height to 350mm~

How much power were you running? Would the 16's work with 200-230kw atw?

Might chase you up on those GTR's you have for sale

my car has approx 210rwkw, the wheels and tyres worked well for me as i was able to post some fairly quick times (for my car) at a few deca days, plenty of grip in a straight line, and great handling characteristics due to the light wheels and stiff sidewall r rubber.
