Neighbour came knocking on the door tonight, says the lights on the car are doing weird things. I go out, and they are, rear lights and at the front, flashing between high beam and the fogs .... not bright, just dim like there's not much power. And there's not either, not enough power to open the doors by remote, or turn over the engine. So I've disconnected the battery, but now what?

I've looked at this post http://www.skylinesaustralia.com/forums/topic/343588-possessed-lights/page__p__5540346__hl__battery__fromsearch__1#entry5540346

but today has been one of the driest, sunniest days here in Melb for a long time, and there's not even a hint of moisture in the battery compartment. I didn't have the car today, my wife was using it, but it doesn't sound like she was doing anything unusual with it, certainly been no warning lights on recently.

I'm presuming it will go again with a jump start, once the RACV get here, but any ideas as to the cause? It's an '04 300GT sedan.

Cheers,

Richard

Thanks Chris, will do.

Is battery death in these always that sudden, or should there have been other signs?

there is not a science to it.

IF you are lucky the car will be slow to start otherwise it will simply die. average life of a battery is 2-3 years at best. if in doubt - change it.

So when the car comes back to life it 'knows' where the windows are. You know that little automatic adjustment your car does when the door closes? Yeah you need to reset that.

Put window down, put window up and hold the up button for three seconds at the top, put the window back down. You should be good.

Just curious,

i changed my battery last week and read you needed to make sure the windows were all the way down before disconnecting...why?

So that process of "put window down, put window up and hold the up button for three seconds at the top, put the window back down" is after disconnecting and connecting it back?

Hmmm cant say i did that exact procedure,

but as far as i can tell windows go up/down fine and still do that lil kick at the end.

Well I got the RACV to jump start it this morning anyway. Seems like the fog lights had been switched on accidentally, which obviously did the battery draining trick. Guy said the battery was still very healthy, so I'll just leave it and keep an eye on it for now.

    • What HVAC actuator is under the steering wheel? Do you mean on the RHS of the centre console, immediately to the left of your shin? If so, then yes, it is probably that one, because that is the mode door actuator, and from what I know, it's still a pain in the arse to replace. I don't know about whole dash out, but you certainly have to rip into the centre console section. I don't know if it's covered in the workshop manual, as I haven't spent much time looking at those parts of it. (and by "the workshop manual, I mean the R32 GTR one, which is the most comprehensive one we have, and it should be similar enough between that and later cars to serve as a guide).
    • ...oops. forgot the TCU end...
    • No I got mine from a friend that had fabricated one … but I had to fit it to my setup which was a hks turbo setup. His was a Garrett -7. So one of my turbos was not a flange for one side … then I had a leak in the welds I had to find a weld shut … in the end the setup was decent priced but I spent a lot to get it fitted. A couple companies I checked would make it but you’re talking 7-9k aud with titanium. No joke mine was 6-7k even second hand after I had to fit it in Hong Kong … labour is expensive here.
    • I'd just like to restate that I don't think anyone here is actually hating I recently sold a car part to a guy who was building a forged auto R34, with MV stall and aiming at ~450kw. I told him that I'm him, from the future and to stop after it explodes once. I told him I knew he won't listen the first time, and that's fine. But if my predictions do come true - Change direction faster than I did. I also said it's probably no coincidence that the dyno plot of a reliable turbo engine starts to look a lot like a N/A motor. :p
