In recent times I have realised how many bull shit technicalities you can get done on.

Here are a couple of examples, please feel free to add to 'The bull shit list'

*Empty wiper water bottle

*Blunt Wiper blades

*Air freshner from the rear view

*Not having matching front tyres (found this out on Monday when I had my tyres replaced)

*Xenon headlights (stolen from another thread)

The problem is using them to give someone a major. Ie wiper jet blocked (this has happened) all it requires is a pin to be put in to clean the dirt out and it's fixed. Washer jet bottle empty...excuse me while I pour my bottle of mt Franklin in.... But hey, damn, still gotta tale time off work to get a roadworthy or see vicroads to clear it...got no leave n can't take time off? Too bad reg suspended oops... Etc. It's the biggest joke.

no....bulsh1it "*Not having matching front tyres (found this out on Monday when I had my tyres replaced)"

Under hard braking, you want both tires to perform the same, so you stay in a straight braking line. So nothing bullshit here. Rear, you can mix and match which makes sense to me.

*Xenon headlights (stolen from another thread)

-I have average lights, and at night when one of these fag lights point directly at me, i cant see nothing! So agree with ban here as well

The reason Xenon headlights are a roady issue (and it's only aftermarket, not factory fitted) is the reflectors aren't suitable for xenon and you get this issue, ie. glaring lights for oncoming traffic. Xenons need a different focal point to regular headlights.

So, especially as a motorcyclist, I couldn't agree more. If your car doesn't have xenons from the factory they should not be fitted at all.

The rest of the rules, however, are pretty much BS. If you can fix it on the side of the road or fix it with a single trip to Autobarnz and $5 then it should never be metered out for a major,. Even a minor is pushing it. But then again, I find these are more for attitude than anything (a few examples notwithstanding). You would only get pinged for this kind of stuff when A) you've been a d!ck to the copper or B) you've just been stung by an anti-import copper such as that prick in Knox. In both cases it could be considered your fault or at least partially your fault.

More often than not a copper wouldn't even think twice about checking these kind of things.

On one of my recent pull overs (P plates on a Skyline, I get pulled over ~2 times a week in Bendigo) the cop was trying to defect my car and failing, so told him was wasting his time and mine. He then told me that tecnically he could get me for the huntsman spider that had just wandered across my windscreen as it was 'in my line of sight'

That provided my LOL for the day.

Totally agree if it can be fixed road-side it shouldn't be used.

You need to be able to clean your windscreen - if you go for a roadworthy check or to clear defect, they will check this:

ADR 16 - Windscreen Wipers and Washers

The function of this Australian Design Rule is to specify requirements for windscreen wipers and washers to ensure reasonable visibility through the windscreen in inclement weather.

*Air freshner from the rear view

This falls under the same law as you cant have anything hanging from your rear-view because of the position - whether it's fluffy dice or an air freshener - once again, a national rule. This rule would also include things like improperly positioned GPS devices that obstruct vision, and even windscreen damage (cracks/stone chips) within the 'critical/primary/secondary vision' area (each has differ rules). I believe this is covered under ADR 8.

*Not having matching front tyres (found this out on Monday when I had my tyres replaced)

As someone has already mentioned - no tyre shop would let you do this as you need consistent handling & braking on both sides of the car. This is about protecting you and other motorists. Would imagine there would be a ruling in ADR 24 for this.

*Xenon headlights (stolen from another thread)

If your headlights were not designed for xenon globes, then you will be sending out glaring light. If they were designed for xenon globes, but don't have the necessary auto-levellers and washer, then they're also illegal (think various skyline models with factory xenons which have to get converted because of this rule). This is all in an effort to stop glare to oncoming drivers and make things safer for everyone.

This one is covered under ADR 13 'Installation of Lighting and Light Signalling Devices on other than L-Group Vehicles'

Summary:

The requirements of paragraph 5.5.2. shall not apply to dipped-beam headlamps. Dipped-beam headlamps shall not swivel according to the angle of lock of steering. Dipped-beam headlamps with gas-discharge light sources shall only be permitted in conjunction with the installation of headlamp cleaning device(s) according to Regulation No. 45.

I think what the headlight thing I is say for example my car, I have a series 3 33r with factory xenons but they're still illegal despite it being factory. Same with r34s. Mine aren't even bright enough to hurt really. It's listed more from annoyance I think

    • Was planning on getting an R35 MAF and the adapter, should this be okay? Also any idea where I could get my hands on an intake pipe?
    • I mean yes, if you're starting from scratch on an unknown engine yes you don't need to be doing all kinds of math in the background but if you're doing relatively minor changes like AFM + injectors + boost up with some aftermarket turbos it takes quite a bit of math if you want to do something like maintain OEM fuel + timing tables but compressed and then a bit more load scale up top. I think I've spent too much time working on big engineering nightmares though so I'm a big fan of trying to constrain the scope of whatever work I'm doing as much as possible and trying to get it right before moving on. For example, a local owner just did the usual E85 + single turbo conversion to his R32 GTR and nearly burned his car to the ground doing some spirited driving up the local mountains. Turbine is unshielded and too close to the hood insulation. It's tough to balance "just get the project done" and "seemingly small details can cause massive setbacks I'm not willing to deal with".
    • No idea about Neil's steering wheel, but I have the same behaviour in the Stagea. I doubt it has ever been messed with so might be normal. Indicating to turn right at a roundabout and correcting even a little bit to the left to go around will cancel the indicator. Never considered it an issue other than it being a bit odd.
    • Does anyone know if this is off centered? Looks like it, when I indicate to go right, but turn my steering wheel slightly left it cancels (was always like that even before I started messing around with it) was wondering if anyone else has the same issue?
    • Nothing photo worthy since last update, lots of little plumbing bits for the AAC/Cold start valves, and unfortunately I still need another couple of parts for the brake booster line and the AAC into the plenum. Otherwise it all looks good to start up engine wise, onto checking the electrics/interior
