Hey guys,

For those who don't know me I've got an NA Supra which is in top mechanical condition, but terrible paint condition. It's a custom 4-layer pearl yellow (which was done in Japan I believe) and looks amazing, except for the multitude of scratches, dings and the GOLD coloured bodykit. For the record I bought it this way.

Now for a long time I've been considering respraying it myself. Its only an NA Supra, and whilst its mechanically good, its not worth getting a professional respray. My question is, how difficult is a backyard job, and what colour is easiest?

I've been recommended against doing yellow as lead based paints are now illegal and yellow is one of the toughest colours to do well. I was thinking possibly matte black? IMO I don't think the colour suits Supras all that well, but its not terrible. The reason being matte requires far less prep work and its less likely to run etc due to the rough surface. Plus being black it won't matter so much if I get some paint on the window trim, etc.

Does anyone have a link to some good articles or even a video with advice and lessons on backyard resprays? I have all the equipment as I've resprayed parts of the stupid gold body kit, but never been brave enough to attempt the entire car.

Just quickly, this is what I was thinking of doing but I may be getting it all wrong.

Sand the car down.

Tape it off.

Spray primer.

Sand primer, but still use a relatively high grit (I want the surface to be some what rough, not silky smooth).

Spray a glossy black (or should I use a flat black?).

Spray with glossy sealant.

The goal is to have the rough surface provide the dulling affect and the glossy paint give some reflective sheen. So its more of a satin than matte, hopefully.

I was going to practice it on my stock spoiler and see how it came out.

This would be the result ideally, but without the blacked out lights or deleted door handles.

just out of curiosity why would the surface need to be rough if it was going to be a satin finish? iv also heard of people just using a single base coat, no clear. or either add a flattener , and control it with the hardner

To be honest I don't know much about painting. Except from fooling around when painting my kid I know if you don't sand the primer smooth you get a matte like effect. I also saw and felt a matte black sil80 on the weekend which had the rough surface, black paint and came out with a really nice matte appearance.

I figured if I sanded the primer to a semi-smooth surface and put a glossy paint on it it would give it some reflection and make it more satin like.

yeah but either way its just like a crap spray job . irregardless of surface , gloss is gloss . itll shine through theoretically ? maybe google it ..

all i can say is a good quality finish is all in the prep work , sanding , filling etc...i do a fair bit of spraying myself, learnt a lot as i go over time , always trying new techniques . practice on the spoiler or something , test it out . i doubt itll be satin . you may need to get a special kind of clear with low gloss if possible , or either you just spray a base coat

no idea champ,

i sprayed my r34 front and rear bars with acrylic black (GV1) the stock colour , must say from my experience black is hard . see everything like dogs balls lol....but with acrylic you need to cut it back from like 1200 through to 2000 , then apply cutting compound and a few polishes etc

a lot of work , but its worth it . maybe try a lighter colour ? aston martin green would look epic on a supra

ive been told by a mate who has sprayed his vl twice that white is the easiest colour to spray as the imperfections dont show up as bad.

He also said that black is hardest as every little imperfection no matter how small looks 10 times worst.

but in saying that his no expert on paint, just from his experiences

Id stay away from green cause its not sexy :sick: and stick with yellow cause it is hot..

The easiest, cheapest way i reckon is you just rub it back a bit till you start seeing undercoat, fill scrathes and such with spray putty as you go, then spray yellow over the top again..this way you dont have to worry undercoating it again or about door jams, under bonnet etc

For best results you can hire a proper spray booth for a day as well, prepare it first then drive it to a spray booth ,mask it up and spray, then drive home and cut it and your done.Have seen a few people do this with some great results..One of which was a bright yellow panelvan and the guy had never painted before and it looked great

If you want the satin black, maybe just get as good a finish as you can and then have the whole thing wrapped in vinyl?

If you were in brisbane i could point you in the right direction of a guy to do it, but im sure you could get it done somewhere in Vic too

This car is actually painted white like the one next to it :thumbsup:

unecessary to sand back to undercoat . as long as its been sanded well and bogged etc , itll hold . up to you weather you prime , some people just spray over existing paintwork. generally i like to prime to have a good look at any defects or panel damage to clarify its at its best

haha vinyl wrapping, there is a commodore i see in melbourne occasionaly that has been completely covered in carbon fibre wrap...looks hilarious..

I actually want to see that 34 entirely wrapped in carbon but

A) Its wrapped in black as a promotion to his business

B) I have no doubt the commodore was done by the owner

and C) Im guessing the vinyl was cheap rubbish unlike the 3M carbon stuff stephen has :thumbsup:

Kez I live down your way mate ,if you wanna give it a quik blowover in yellow id be happy to give you a helping hand, ill even paint it if you want .I wouldnt mind the practice. Wouldnt take to long or cost to much and should look shit hot

    • Yeah, the latter. No diff should have a centre replaced without checking clearances because its unlikely to be the same as whatever came out. Not that that stops most people just checking a new centre in
    • Major thread necro but how bad of a job is it to DIY? Looking at it online it looks like if you reuse your ring and pinion as long as those are in good condition it should be fine to just pull the axles/front cover and replace the diff that way? Or should I be replacing everything and doing preload measurements/gear mesh testing like the factory service manual mentions for the rear diff?
    • in my list I had the R33 GTR as the best Skyline. Infact I had all GTR's (33>34=32), the NSX, the GTO, the 300ZX, the 180SX, the S15 better than the FD RX7. I had the MR2 and the A80 as 'just' better. I also think the DC5R Integra looks better but this is an 01 onwards car. I also think the FC>FD. It's almost like aesthetics are individual! The elements @GTSBoy likes about the FD and dislikes about the 180 are inverse in my eyes. I hate the rear end of the FD and it's weird tail lights that are bulbous and remind me of early hyundai excels. They are not striking, nor iconic, nor retro cool. The GTO has supercar proportions. I maintain these look much better in person (like the NSX) especially with nice wheels and suspension which is mandatory for all cars pretty much. Some (or all) of these you have to see in person to appreciate. You can't write a car off until you see one in the flesh IMO. Like most people we probably just like/dislike cars which represent certain eras of design or design styles in general. I also think the 60's Jag E type looks HORRIBLE, literally disgusting, and the 2000GT is nothing to write home about. FWIW I don't think the Dodge Viper Gen1's have aged very well either. You can probably see where I rate bubbly coupes like the FD. I know we're straying now but the C4 and C5 absolutely murder the Viper in the looks department as time goes on, for my eyes. Wouldn't surprise me if people who love the FD, also love the MX5, Dodge Viper, Jag E Type, etc etc.
    • I used to hate R31s, and any of the other Nissans that led up to it, and any of the Toyotas with similar styling, because of the boxiness. They were, and remain, childish, simplistic, and generally awful. I appreciate R31s a lot more now, but only the JDM 2 door. The ADM 4 door (and any other 4 door, even if they are unique compared to our local one) can eat a bowl of dicks. The Aussie R31 is also forever tarnished by their association with stereotypical bong clutching Aussie R31 owners of the 90s and early 2000s. I think the Nissans of the 70s (other than 120Y/180B/200B) are far superior looking to the 80s cars. The 240K era Skylines are boss. The same is broadly true of Toyotas. Hondas don't ever register in my thinking, from any era. Mitsus are all horrid shitboxen in any era, and so also don't register. Subarus are always awful, ditto. Daihatsus and Suzukis also don't generally register. They are all invisible. I think the SW20 MR2 looks fiddly. The 3000GT/GTO is like that but way worse. Too many silly plastic barnacles and fiddly gimmicks ruined what could have been a really nice base shape. Kinda-sorta looks like a big heavy ST165 Celica coupe (and I'm not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing). I think the 180SX is dreadfully bland. It's not bad looking. But it has no excitement to it at all. It's just a liftback coupe thing with no interest in its lines, and bad graphical elements (ie wide expanses of taillight plastic on the rear garnish). The S13 Silvia is a little better - getting closer to R32 shapes. But still....bland. S14? Nope. Don't love it. S15...a little better. Probably a lot better, actually. Benefits from not being like a shrunk in the wash R34 (where the S13 was a shrunk in the wash R32 and the S14 looked like a Pulsar or something else from the stable on Nissan mid 90s horrors). The Z32 was hot as f**k when it came out but hasn't aged as well as the A80. Keep in mind that I think the R33 is the most disgusting looking thing - and out of all the previous cars mentioned is objectively closest to my precious R32. It's just....real bad, almost everywhere you look. And that is down to the majority of what was designed in the 90s being shit. All Nissans from that era look like shit. Most other brands ditto. In that context, the FD absolutely stands out as being by far the best looking car, for reasons already discussed. Going behind the aesthetics, the suspension alone makes it better than almost any other car.
