Car Details:

Model: 1990 S3 R31 Skyline

Engine: RB30-mf5 gearbox and lsd

Colour: Green and black

Ball park asking price: $2000

Condition: Few things wrong with it (gearbox needs reco or replacement, diff needs replacement, few cosmetic things to do), so it would suit someone looking to turn it into a project or drift car, or just as a daily driver as it's recently passed a roadworthy and still has rego. Looking for a replacement gearbox and diff at the moment so as with all r31 parts it's just a matter of keeping an eye out for someone selling at the right price as paying $800 to reco a $400 gearbox or diff is a bit of bullsh*t, so i'll add updates concerning that.

Back tyres need replacing so i'm about to do that. bought the car for $2000 and i spent around $1700 getting it more than roadworthy, basically everything mechanical besides the engine, driveline and diff are replaced. It's my project at the moment but i'm curious to see offers as i've been looking at other cars. I'll be doing cosmetic repairs also so once again i'll include updates. The dash electronics needs re-doing as the previous owner was a dirty tasmanian and decided to put bonnet gauges on it, which reminds me i'll probably replace the bonnet before any selling.

My rego runs out this month so i will be selling it with the rwc and whatever is left of the new 6 months rego. If i get most of the cosmetic work done plus the gearbox replacement, i'll bump the price to about $2800 with rwc and rego, so you can just drive that s.o.b away, but like i said just pm or email me with offers or trades i'll consider anything.

Parts that have been replaced -

Rear trailing arms (with urethane bushes) and others.

Custom gearbox mount

reco'd handbrake cable

wheel hubs and rotors replaced

new brakes

There were other parts replaced i just can't remember right now. Pics will be posted as soon as i can.

Forgot that engine was replaced with another RB30, though queensland transport didn't seem to notice or care so the rego still has the original engine number, but you can just change that if you really care that much it shouldn't be any problem.

    • Well, hydraulic lifters will get noisy if they are dirty/fouled in some way, and exactly how that manifests will depend on exactly what schmutz is where. There is a procedure on here somewhere for dismantling and soaking/cleaning them. Replacing them with new is about 50% of the work and about 5% of the money!
    • Thanks for the reply @GTSBoy this is is a hydraulic lifter engine. Yea right i did not realise the lifters were supposed to be compressible while installed. I could push them down but i had to lean almost my while body weight on them.  I have never heard of a lifter/ lifters ticking only at hot idle and getting worse the hotter it gets. I have owned a few jdm cars with noisy lifters. This noise is slightly more subtle, it is more of a sharp gentle metalic tic than the solid and more loud tapping I've heard on lifters. I have used a metal rod, alloy tube, hose and stethoscope and could not find the source of the tick. But it appears to be loudest on the actual engine block behind the exhaust cam gear and next to the oil filter. I had mate (40 year old mechanic) go over it with me and he couldn't find it either..  Could it be a cam seal issue of some sort?  Cheers
    • This seems problematic and unlikely at the same time. Vanilla RB2Xs have hydraulic lifters. They do have "zero" clearance, but only when running with oil pressure inside them. When not running, you should be able to compress them and obtain heaps of clearance. RB26s and Neos have solid lifters. They should have ~0.3mm and ~0.5mm on the inlet and exhaust respectively. If they have zero clearance then bad things are happening. With nothing else being wrong, it would mean that the valves would be held slightly (ever so slightly) open when they are supposed to be closed and it should have all sorts of problems when running, caused by leakage in/out through the valves. Or, zero clearance can indicate severe valve seat recession. None of it is good. Have you used a piece of hose as a stethoscope to try to localise the noise?
    • Sorry for reviving an old post, but I'm having the same hot idle tick issue. Did anyone ever find out what it was?  I have checked/ replaced Injectors Coils checked Lifter clerance (is at zero) Checked Cam lobes Replaced exhaust gasket and studs Would appreciate any advice this is driving me nuts
