Umm from memory it was 300 odd Trent charged me more cos he hates working on soarers... Says they are a bitch to work on..

Then after said that it was in amazing cond and that it was a dream to work with.. No broken clips no brittle plastics etc... Cvnt. Lol

But yeah 300ish I think.. Which is still better than competitors I think.. But with my car I dont care for cheap id prefer to spend biGgerg and do it properly first time around and if I can't afford it tough tits I save up :)

Actually another useful bit of info....

Trents brother did it... said it'd take two hours to do... But spent about five and a half hours doing prep work with steel wool and making sure the film didn't interfere with the ceramic borders or the demisters etc... And the job is fantastic. Compared to my old cefiro that was a bit lifted around the demisters and around the ceramics was really dodge.. But you get that for driving a smelly nissan :)

WIth TKO tinting service, they don't actually come to your house, do they?

The reason I asked is because when I looked up their website, some photos show an R32 getting done at a house, not a shop. :P

that's actually a picture of Trents old house - and the R32 is his brother, Rezz's old car..

his brother Rezz moved to Japan to live if i recall correctly..

Rezz also started this website that you might have heard of.. it's called 7tune.

Victor to answer your question, YEARS ago - like seven years ago trent used to do mobile work... when he was starting out...

but as he said.. he got sick and tired of charging what he used to charge (about 200 bucks) to come to someone's house and he'd be trying to apply the film and there'd be leaves and dirt and dog hair and dust etc blowing everywhere...

so he started his own shop... formerly in vic park on albany hwy.. over the years that became a "cafe strip" and the prices got too high so he relocated to his new carlisle premises.. which are about 5 min drive from old shop..

my cefiro he did like 6 years ago for $240.. that's a price i remember... mind you that would've been 2005.. prices have naturally gone up exponentially as his reputation has built and he's perfected his craft. not to mention the costs of living / rental / operating a business / breathing / electricity etc. so naturally in 2011 he can no longer charge $240...

IMO - pay the extra and get a good job done the FIRST time around. :)

Yeah right hahaha. I called Trent yesterday and he quoted me 310 for 20 Grade, 300 for 30 grade and 290 for 35 grade (darkest legal).

5.5 hrs - he must have been pissed lol.

I'm gettin mine done in a week or so. I had my SNOARER done by Tint A Car back a couple of yrs ago. $300 for midnight express (sale month) and the job was perfect. Sept now they want like $400 for Octane on half a soarer size car - faggots.

TKO IS PURELY IN HOUSE NOW. NO MOBILE WORK.

Can I please ask a noob question? :P

What is 20, 30, 35 grade mean? Is that quality based ratings or something else?

Its the grade of tint, relating to its ability to block light, i.e the darkness of the tint.

The lower the number, the darker the tint. I think you can get like a 22 or an 18 as well hey.

Apparently 20 Grade will go more or less unnoticed. Anything under 20 will look illegal haha.

Cool. Thanks, mate.

I think I will just stick with 35 grade (darkest legal). It's the safest bet. :)

James - to be fair as i said, Trent's bro did it and i think he's a bit more finicky.. Trent took the day off... but he actually did put in 5.5 hours of labour. i would know.

...i had to sit outside the shop n wait that long.

...there's only so many games of angry birds that one man can play.

haha

and Victor - James is right, but the REASON they are called that.. is because of the FILMS light omittance...

meaning...

35 grade tint - allows 35% of light to show through it. meaning it dims the light by 65%

30 grade = 30% of light gets through

and etc etc

WA rules are - windows must have NO LESS than 35% light omittance. keep in mind that while many shops like tintacar will tell you that midnight express is the darkest legal tint.. it's not.

because while the TINTED FILM is 35 grade FILM... there is a factory tint in all automotive glass...

meaning darkest legal tint is actually illegal by ADR rules :/

years ago - TKO used to use a film called desert smoke - which was the COLOUR of the film...

it was BLACK black.

like wesley snipes black. it made samuel jackson look like mister robinson.

TKO have changed their film to a different brand which is not quite as black coloured nowadays.. so in that regard its a bit less noticeable to the law...

but put it this way.. i have a black car. i have 20 grade tint. james has a black / dark blue car, and will be getting 20 grade tint.

on our cars - dark tint looks fine, just fine.. because against our paint. the tint appears light..

however you have a white car... so it contrasts and clashes the two colours as polar opposites...

so for you - i'd go 30 grade.

again - still "illegal" but try putting a light meter on it - with discrepencies and allowance for error. 30 grade is passable.

but you didn't hear that from me.

Yeah all good bro. Spose the Soarer demands a bit more time spent on it haha.

+ 1 on the colour contrast. didn't think about that at all. but as you say I have a black/dark blue car (i prefer gun metal but anyway haha) so I'll be sweet. I have to pass pits in July though so I don't know whether I should go the 30 or the 20.

Did you get the Soarer assessed with your grade 20 already on?

WHOA DUDE NO

you're from over east. in WA if you bring an import from over east you need a full inspection that is treated like an initial registration to attain WA rego.

DO NOT PUT TINT ON YOUR CAR. OF ANY SORT. you will get declined registration if you do. WA pits do imports as special cases if from over east and moved across. it's a PITA.

but they will make you pull your tint off if you have 20,30,35, 50 grade. whatever.

repeat call up TKO and cancel becuase you will get made to pull it off in July...

..ps why you waiting so long to WA rego your ride?

and i see a tiny tiny thumbnail of your car in your DP - didn't realise it was GMG sorry man! :)

again - NO TINT. car must be stock / close to stock for this one - it's a BIG inspection.

EDIT: it may be worth calling up dept of transport and getting put thru to technical officers at welshpool and asking if they'll pass a car with WA applied 35 grade tint. but i wouldn't push it just incase.

my personal experience - car was brought from japan with tint on - had to pull it off because japanese tint is apparently dangerous to use. shock horror.

personally i would just wait it out unitl car is officially rego'd and then once that's done just go nuts.

because even IF the tech guys at welshpool inspection centre say "yeah we can register it with tint" - from my personal experience, what the technical officers say... and what the inspector says... are usually two very different things.

reason for this is because everyone that works for the western australian dept of transport who are employed in the vehicle examination centre tend to be:

  • ALCHOHLICS

with no consistencies in their dealings with the public.

James sympathises.

they behave like the hyenas from the Lion King when you rock up there.

NO

even better. they act like the "thugs" off west side story..

WHOA DUDE....im from WA for starters. I bought my 32 in Sydney and drove her back

Waiting until the NSW rego is out in July so I can get maximum free rego time ;)

...I'm well aware of the inspection process for interstate cars as I've already done it with my past cars (soarer and e36 325i) lol

But yeah very interested to know that I shouldn't have tint on my car before inspection day. *booking cancelled*

Seriously man thanks for that info, I would have been screwing myself over unknowingly!

And yeah sorry about my pissy little photo...pinch.gif

    • Harness update time have had great fun and learnt so much already so far with this project. I started off making both the ignition and injector sub harnesses in the hope any mistakes i made here aren't as hard to undo and learn from as the main harness.  A cool comparison of the old harness using presumably TXL wire and the new which is using Tezel. Also opted to use DTM plugs to keep the whole setup as neat and tidy as possible and tucked the wiring under the coil bracket to try and keep it all from sticking out too much. Although the injector harness, I'm not overly happy with as I'm still using the rubber boots that are supplied with the type of plugs it just looks ugly and sticks out like a sore thumb with the white identifiers so a slight redesign may be done.   Then it was main harness time and most importantly trying to route it nice and away from the heat it will use the OEM heater hose routing which is no longer present to keep the harness up high and secure. it's amazing how much smaller this harness is able to be compared to the old one. plugged everything into the emtron and with the help of the tuner again attempted to start it up and instantly fired up and running smoothly on all 6 which was a big shock to myself. So still some routing and adjusting to be done for the final fit up and installing a knock sensor harness plug which is in the post all has gone surprisingly well.     The old harness for shits and giggles.
