Couldn't find a suitable thread for this, which was a bit surprising.

So, I am sick of the single din sony rubbish in the line and am looking at a good double din screen to take its place. I guess minimum features would be;

- DVD playback

- Blutooth (for handsfree phone and streaming)

- USB (preferably front mounted)

- GOOD touch interface

Optional

- SD card

- Navigation

- min. 5V pre-out

Looking in the price range of as cheap as possible atm. Have had my dash at big sound systems in my previous two cars..

Something like this maybe? http://www.ryda.com.au/Philips-CED1700-In-Dash-DVD-Bluetooth-Monitor-p/ced1700.htm

Anyone have a double din installed or have any recommendations? Anything I need to consider when installing one of these into the car?

not asking for much are you..lol

that unit isn't recommended

I would look at the big brands, Pioneer, Alpine, Clarion, but navigation is going to cost you a fair whack pushes you over a grand in most cases . what your describing is a eblow radio(under 500), which is fine but won't perform these tricks exactly,

I use a Audiocontrol overdrive to push my signal up, to 13volts per RCA channel instead of the aftermarket radio output.and it maintains that thru all the processors to the amps. each item has signal clipping meters on them.

depending on your current setup you may need additional parts, to reconfigure dash. a/c etc.

and dont expect the radio trim rings to fit right, not many do.

get a pro to install it if you want it done right, where are you located , and I take it its a R34 , dash photo ?

hey mate, thanks for the reply.

I had a peep at JB/wow the other day and have pretty much ruled out nav lol. I was mislead, not knowing the 'Nav' option actually requires a heftily price external nav unit.

Will definitely be getting a pro to install and still want my must haves (bluetooth, usb etc). I am located near twmba, but would travel to Bris for the right deal. Any recommendations for around $500? Will take some dash pics if needed, but its just the stock 98 R34 GTT dash with din pocket.

Cheers

Ticks all your boxes bar nav, as you said thats alot more costly exercise. All up was a touch under $400 delivered.

Older model brand name units seem to go much cheaper over in the US than they do locally, but a question sapphiregraphics might have the answer to, how different is the US FM band to ours? Are we likely to miss out on any stations by buying a US headunit?

the bands are the same, the jap radio freq, differ but the sat, nav wont work(in most cases ) , neither will the siruis sat, radio or pandora program for iphone .and warranty is voided , radios no, but with the dollar being so high now amps, subs etc could be way cheaper.

its going to put a pressure on local shops to drop prices as well, so shop around.

sonny q sorry about that useless post i just did - i was typing it on my ipod and it died halfway thru... hence that mega typo...

"Failing that many alpine units have a seigneurs you can set the badnwidth to"

^^^what!?!?!?!

ANYWAY

i'll continue what i was saying...

downside of the alpine W407 is:

it's mechless - meaning there's no CD player, no DVD player.. etc etc... it's purely digital. meaning it works only with USB connection or bluetooth

up side of the alpine W407 is:

it's mechless - meaning there's no CD player, no DVD player.. etc etc... it's purely digital. meaning it works only with USB connection or bluetooth

...which means...

no more CDs sitting in your:

centre console

glovebox

that window visor thing that your relative bought you for xmas two years ago that holds 5 cds which you're too worried to throw out in case they say something

under your chair

on your floor

in your boot

it also means there's no more unlabelled fkn blue coloured non descript CDRs that you find around that you have no idea what they are and you wonder what's on it only to find out that it's the fkn foo fighters - which is annoying cos you dont even know why you even HAVE The foo fighters cos you hate them. and you wonder how the fk your car keeps re-spawning these foo fighters cds cos you SWEAR that everytime you find it - you chuck it out the window

and yet every time you find a fkn blue coloured non labelled CDR you can bet your bottom dollar that you hear the buttery drawl of Dave Grohl singing long road to ruin

where was i.

oh yeah

no more fkn cds everywhere

you just have an iPod / iphone that you can plug it in stealth styles and just control your entire music library using the deck. cool huh. same goes with all your movies too!

the best part about it is that you'll have an ipod / iphone to carry with you for games / emails / music etc

linque...

Troy - while i agree that it's good to support local business and everything of that nature.. that particular unit is $400 AUD delivered.

that includes:

head unit

wiring harness to suit your car so it's plug n thug

din frame

mounting kit

to buy that unit in australia is special order for $1400 through alpine - that's not including the bits n bobs

...so while i like protecting australias industry... for once - - - i say just protect yourself! we've spent YEARS with our dollar matching 65 US cents, why not have some fun while the dollar is at $1.06!!!!

the world ends in 2012 anyway

haha sucked in!!! you not ballin!!!

ballin.gif

and what you mean skynet takes over today? whats that mean???

apparently to get the best quality audio from the W407 you need to get the umm

...IMPRINT sound quandmodulifier space capacitor

which is about $100 exrtra - but this reviewer says:

"This unit is just simply amazing.. I installed it on my X100 deck yesterday and WOW. The difference in the quality of the sound is like night and day. Much more clear.. The pre-out are a much higher voltage. There are hundreds of setting, including timing correction for perfectly tune you system... This is by far the most important purchase on my system"

and to all doubters of warranty:

Alpine products are warranted solely by Sonic Electronix, Inc. under the same period and terms as the original Alpine warranty. Sonic Electronix is not an Authorized Alpine Dealer and Alpine requires all merchandise purchased by Sonic Electronix customers to be returned solely to Sonic Electronix. Alpine products are also covered by our Standard Return Policy for returns on exchanges or refunds within 30 days from the date of purchase.

^^^probably not worth the pixels it's read off - but still... it's there :P

it literally streams bluetooth off your iphone / ipod

wireless connection styles yo

but i owuld assume for best audio quality - it's best to just plug it in

and yes you can make / receive calls from the unit too
