when i bought my commodore last month, the ad had been on carsales for about a day (i was checking every few days looking for a car that fittted my requirements). i sent the guy a text asking if i could see the car. he sent me the details etc. this was at about lunch time and i said i was going to look at it after work. a bit later on i get a message saying that the car was sold. then just before 5 i get another message asking if i still wanted to go view the car because the guy who had said he was going to buy it was a scammer.

Got a new one just this morning, the third one for the kart (in sig).

He was really persistent, sent about 4 emails, with me replying saying cash only on pickup and this looks exactly the same as the other scam emails I got. Though he assured me he was safe and that bad people out there ruin things for the good people like us (lol).

Anyways, I saw one where they sent the seller a fake email from "paypal" saying the money was in waiting, and the seller then had to pay the shipping company, which was probably just the guys personal offshore account.

How much control do they get if they have your paypal account?

First mistake with Scams ... Never reply

Yeah the first message was not highly conspicuous, just a little suspicious in the first message.

The usual situation only came out in the second. I've had genuine interest a couple of times from people with pretty horrific grammar too.

They're everywhere.

Must feel good to have got the commodore eh? Which one did you go for?

vt wagon. auto, lowered (needs a camber kit), 18's with near new tyres, 2.5" catback, tinted windows (legal darkness), 201,000kms and most importantly, cruise control (since i drive 67kms to work). cost me $3550. looked like arse until i gave it a cut and polish (probably hadn't been polished in a few years. the paint looked like matt white instead of gloss white). didn't buy it for the mods, bought it cause it was in my price range and was in decent condition and was one of the few that came with a RWC in that price range.

Geez good buy, I'm constantly surprised by what you can find if you wait a while and look around.

It's easy to pick up clean commodores for cheap these days, I picked up my immaculate vr v8 Calais for a little over 2 grand, not a mark on the body or interior, came with 18's and brand new toyo tyres. With 8 months rego from an old bloke.

the scam actually doesn't threaten the loss of the vehicle, they're just trying to get a few thousand out of each 'victim' for 'transport costs'.

they want the email you use for paypal not to hack in or anything like that, but to send you a 'receipt'. This will LOOK like a real paypal receipt, but it's fake. You THINK you have been paid for the car and you then agree to pay the transport cost to send the car to him/her. Either via paypal or western union. So it's not the car they're after, it's just a bit of a cash supposedly for 'transport costs'. Why a seller would agree to pay for transport, i have no idea, but i guess some people are desparate for a sale.

So yeah, it's not about hacking your paypal account, it's so they know which email address you use so they can send the 'fake' receipt of money to the correct linked email address. It's all just down to try and get you to transfer $1000 or so to them. That's it.

a lot of bike sellers being targetted as well at the moment too

    • Damn, as someone who just glued the damn things in (very slightly askew but better) I wish I saw this, or someone made this. Would be worth linking this to Boosted International. They're always looking for product ideas and this is something they would likely make.
    • You know what, I'll double or nothing. Save your money, buy a V8 Manual Mustang in 2 years and have a more fun street car with better support and all that. I often tell people "if I could do it all again, I wouldn't". Sell your R34 GTT to someone, spend the 20k in difference between that and a 2018 Gen2 V8 Manual Mustang. I'll bet you will have the $ in your pocket by the time you spend the ~20K differential on mods and get them installed. Just planting this seed for future regrets. Blah blah, wisdom of people who would do it differently who are at the end of the road you are just starting on, etc. Car modding is often death by a thousand cuts as you wait to afford the next big mod. Imagine a 2 door Skyline with a 330KW N/A V8 Revving to 7500rpm like the RB25, with 315's all round.
    • Yes I'm going through a similar thing with my R33 with rust in seams due to dried out seam sealer cracking. After much research I settled on Penetrol. Read what it does and its done a bloody fantastic job for me. Pressure pack comes with a thin tube to get into hard to reach places.
