Hey guys,

Before buying a car i've been looking at all aspects of what will be needed. I've got insurance worked out, but the next problem is parts.

Where do you guys buy your parts when you need them?

For example, pretending that i need new pads, as they wear out or a new exhaust manifold gasket... and other stuff like air filters? Is there a place that has everything i need? The car in mind is an r32 gtst and disadvantages are that no other model overlap (eg with a mustang, you can use falcon parts on them) with r32s and I've been told that parts are quite expensive. :D

Any help would really be appreciated.

P.S i have used the search

Brake pads are readily available from Bendix and others - same as (Oz) GTR / 300ZX - DB1170 front, DB1220 rear.

Air filters are same as earlier (R30 / R31) Skylines, or Commodore. Oil filters are same as earlier Skylines.

Thermostat - I bought one for a VL-Turbo for my RB20DET. Even came in a nice Nissan box.

Any other parts, Nissan dealer can get them in from Japan - usually about 2 weeks delivery.

Worst case, you can try any of the numerous import wreckers.

Nissan can source just about everything for imports now directly from Japan. In fact when I did 2 exhaust valves last year in my RB20DET, I found them straight off the shelf in Melbourne. All nissan parts are expensive unfortunately, even for locally released cars. Example: My dads 1989 Ford Maverick (Nissan Patrol), he needed new window seals, pretty obscure part. Quoted $95 from nissan for the pair, rung up ford and got the exact same part (with nissan stamped on it) for $49.

In terms of body panels etc.. The local used market is pretty good for that sort of thing, people bringing in lots of container loads of used parts. Ive never had trouble finding bits for my 32, sometimes ive had to be patient though. Ive even had to get some obscure plastic interior and exterior parts and had no problems.

Supercheap Auto stocks things like pads for import skylines, and as people have been saying, places like Kmart even have things like the oil, oil filters, fuel filters, etc that you'll need.

Many of the parts are in fact common with other nissan models, and across skylines, so usually are pretty readily available. Nissan Australia, yep, can get stuff but its usually very expensive compared to other sources, and everytime I've spoken to them they've said "hmm, don't have it here, gotta get it from Japan, x weeks" so usually I turn to other sources.

For 2nd hand parts and panels, plenty of wreckers specialise in skylines and similar imports, again not difficult. Usually if you just wait on here for a month or so you'll find what you're after as well for a good price -- much cheaper than wrecker prices.

To be honest, when it comes down to it, parts are no more expensive than any other car out there that age. In fact, sometimes cheaper!

haven't had much hassle with getting parts, but of course only the expensive aftermarket guys make bits for 'em - ie upgrades - and everyhting else is genuine, and genuinely expensive.

example - air con relay (accident with a large spanner, don't ask) simple kinda 4 pin thing, hella one =$8 , but of course wouldn't fit in moulded block, nissan one, overnight from capital city (perth in this case) =$89 (managed to get trade, so $44, but still pricy)
