I'm always used to seeing a copper one, so based on that - yes!

it is advisable to have one. helps give it a proper seal since the copper is soft and squashes more and makes it all even. same principle as why cars have head gaskets and exhaust gaskets

I would have thought so...otherwise how will it seal - bolt head on sump? copper washer, o-ring, fibre washer, something is needed!

Mine has never had a washer of any kind on it and hasnt leaked a drop. But it couldnt hurt. I just always forget untill the point i have the plug in my hand.

But in saying that, it didnt have one the 1st time i did an oil change either.

^same, mine didn't have one at all when I did the first oil change (since the prev owner). I added a copper washer anyway. All good
