hey all, ive got my head in at the shop getting a total rebuild and upgrade,

the guy is under the impression he will need the standard shims aswell as the tomie shims that are supplied with the buckets,

i didnt think this would be the case as the tomie buckets are suited to cams with more then 10.25 lift,

me not really knowing what i am doing thru the old buckets and shims out,

so do i need to rebuy standard shims to get this to work,

what likely price is involved with new nissan shims

cheeers

Dan

we'll he'll need whatever shims he needs to get the valve clearances correct. so yeah he'll either need to make up some appropriate thickness shims or buy the right ones from nissan. it's not a matter of 'standard' shims, he needs to measure the valve clearances, compare that to the stated figures in the manual and then buy and fit the appropriate shims.

Yeh that's what i thought I had. Nengun lists them as lifters for cams with more the 10.25 lift, and since I got 10.8 cams I got these to suit, thinking it would make life easier for machine shop

yeah the tomei buckets are thicker to compensate for small base circle cams but you still need shims to set the valve clearances. they don't come with any shims. reason is every car is different. hell every valve can be different. the ONLY way to do it is measure, compare to desired clearance, buy appropriate shims and install them in the buckets.

you can buy the shims from nissan as needed (cost practically nothing), or with the right sized punch you can make your own out of sheet metal. plenty of people do it that way. you can just get off cuts of various thicknesses and punch out the little circles you need.

He really only needs 1 shim and he can work out what the clearance is to order new shims

A full set will make it easier instead of doing 1 at a time.

I seen a guy on ebay selling stock shims for $75

doo doo gave me details of a guy who makes shims in melb

The website is precisionshims.com.au, all the details are there- the number is 03 9723 0199 and speaking to the guy is much easier when you order.

so turns out nissan have 70 variations on the R32 RB26 valve shim, and at 20-23 bucks each is not an option, so second hand is now my only option, hopefully found a set for $75

    • Stock ECU has compensation, you won't damage the engine. Personally I recommend getting an acceptable catalytic converter, it doesn't need to be OEM and super expensive but a cheap universal one to keep it from being super obnoxious to be around. Decatted cars smell pretty awful.
    • Correction. Ignition was on before, but I guess the car had to be running for it to work.
    • The stock ECU won't care. The gains from Nistuning the ECU and then "optimising" the fuel and ignition tables will be about 2 more HP.
    • Appreciate the feedback. It is street car, but not a daily. Last week I got a quote from a good exhaust shop for a decat, one which is bolt-on, bolt-off to be easily replaceable. I got quoted for around €150. I usually do push the motor, but I wasn't in this case to make sure that no damage is done until I get the cat sorted. I think it's best to also ask the exhaust shop for the other option and see what they can do. If (big if) I were to decat though, would it be best to tune the car or would the stock ECU handle it? As far as I know, the stock ECU is not tunable and that would require additional purchases.
    • As above, definitely bash it or get it replaced with a high flow unit.
