I have just been thinking recently about the age and gender of skyline drivers. Are skylines seen by the general public to be "P plater" cars?

Is there a stereo type often associated with skylines? e.g hoons, street racers?

Personally I consider myself to be a mature, sensible and considerate driver. I drive a R32 GTST which is completely standard besides an exhaust so its not my aim to stand out from the crowd as i'm sure is the case with many others on these forums.

What are your thoughts?

i think alot of us fall into the same category (myself included). minimal, or subtle mods seem quite common. But that wont stop people from developing an opinion based on the badge on the car.

I too suffer from this tho......as every time i see a V8 commondoor...i straight away assume bogan (although my 55 yr old mum drives one).

as for the P plater car reference. this is about the only place where it seems true...im not sure why so many kids strive to have a non turbo skyline on their P plates, there are so many cheaper fast and more fuel efficient options. are they really just getting their licenses and going out thinking "fark yeah ima go get me a SKYLINE!"??

I'm on my L's atm (17) and I got my 25GT Coupe a few weeks ago, I brought it simply because I love the look of them, it doesn't worry me that it's a "slug" or a Magna can beat me lolol, but I'm sure it matters to heaps of people (So yes you are right, but performance didn't even cross my mind), hence why they had to introduce P restrictions, as too many inexperienced idiots wanted a fully sick turbocharged car and killed themselves. :ninja:

man i wish i could have imagined buying a 34 before i finished school....mind you they didn't even exist then....lol.

obviously if you really like the look of the car, and you can justify spending that amount of folding cash on your P's, then grats man :) enjoy.

Im a 17 y.o p plater with a non turbo r32

i have always liked the look of the r32 and when one came up cheap at the auctions i jumped at it with both hands haha

the fact that i paid less then my best mate who bought a 1995 corolla makes me pretty happy.

i had done my research and i knew its not fast but i still love the look and feel of it :)

so its not always the case of a kid getting there p's and thinking I NEED A SKYLINE BECAUSE THERE HELL FAST.

I can see why the P-platers want them. They are great looking cars! Obviously p platers cant drive anything quick these days, so why not drive something with good looks. Im sure a non turbo skyline would be much the same as a 6 cyl commodore power wise in a straight line (which most of us grew up driving) but they shit on them in handling and breaking. If i was 17 all over again, i would probably do the same.

18, male, P plater, but have driven powerful cars since I was 12.

The generalization that mainly P platers drive skylines is disturbing, I see so many people around 20-30 driving some wicked Lines.

True that mate, to be honest i hardly see any p plate lines up here (central coast, Newcastle)

I never was a skyline fan until i bought my 33 gtst off a mate, at $4000 i couldnt resist! All i can think now is that i would way prefer to be driving any sort of non turbo skyline than a commodore or falcon etc that most p platers have to resort to.

There's quite a few P plate liners over here in Perth, we don't have those shabby laws, there's too many P platers driving around in hotted up V8 commodores, they get really angry with the Skline drivers to be honest, we always beat them... Legally whistling.gif.

I was always a commodore fan until my friend bought his Skyline, then since then I have bought one and love it to pieces. Loved the clutch into too many pieces though.

haha yeah, those commy boys get the shits when a 6 nails em. I have always driven commodores, and LOVED my ss. Not ragging on ss commodores at all, cause they can be bloody awesome cars, but my skyline SHITS on it performance wise. I couldnt believe just how well it handled when i bought it.. i always say its a go kart with an rb25 in it haha

I'm 20 and male.

There is a stigma with P-platers and Skylines (i'd like to blame fast and furious). Unfortunately for myself, by a matter of 6 weeks, had to comply with the new P-plate laws that were introduced in Qld on July 1st 2007 (I got my license in the August)

I'd always wanted a skyline, from as early as I could remember. I decided not to get one once I could only get a non-turbo. Since there was not a huge market for N/A skylines previously, all available ones were snapped up straight away and then put back up for sale at a ridiculously inflated price.

So in the end I just waited until I received an open license and bought an R32 GTS-T and now a 350Z aswell. Life is sweet.

That's one heck of a list of car owned, Terry. :thumbsup: I can't see myself owning that much cars any time soon, as I love my V35 coupe too much. I plan to keep it for as long as humanly possible and do it up slowly. :) (By the way, I saw your posts on preludeaustralia forum the other day. :P ).

I am 26 years old. I came to Australia in 2006 and working full time now. I saved up as much as I can when I got my full time job back in 2008, and went out and bought my first car, 2004 Nissan Skyline V35 coupe.

The reason being I just fell in love with it on first sight. I admit I don't know anything about a V35 before that. Although it's not as common as the R-series, I still get bad rep sometimes from your common haters. Back in the days, all I thought about owning were R34 GT-T coupe, S15 (Nissan), Evo (Mitsubishi) or a WRX, Liberty (Subaru). Movies and books also affected my decision back in my childhood in Burma. Also, my first car in Burma for 6 months before I came to Australia was a 1989 Toyota Supra (N/A) that my dad bought me. :)

Anyway, I don't care about all the bad stigma associating with a Skyline brand. I don't have time for that. All I care about is I want to enjoy it for myself (Even though it only comes out on the weekends) and with my friends. I also learnt alot after that and got alot of helpful friends (On and off SAU).

Concerning P-plate issue, I would agree on banning some of them (Turbo, V6) as performance cars. Also, there's nothing wrong with buying R-series N/A for starter, as long as not many turns out as actual hoons. :P

All in all, I love my Skyline. :worship:

    • Don't do it if your gearbox box has already having syncro issues. The short hifter will put a greater load on them. If you must I remember Nismo did a shorter shifter, with the top part being physically shorter and the part that went into the gearbox was the same as stock. In saying that I've had a C's short shifter (I think) in mine for many years, which was given to me as the previous owner was not sympathetic to the gearbox. Thus forwarned I was careful and had to modify my normal changing style. You have to be super accurate with your clutch and shifts
    • Well, after a week of daily driving and having to crawl out between the wheel and the side intrusion bars. I got myself a quick release setup. I went with an NRG short hub and Quick Release with some cute heart cutouts on the pull tabs. Nice and matchy matchy with the rest of the interior accents I have going on.  The only downside is the total stack height even with the short adapter is longer than the old HKB boss kit. Luckily I had some adjustment left on the column so move the wheel away.
    • stock shifter with new bushes, springs and cup will improve it. Gktech do all the bits. The opinion as the years have gone on is the redline is not great in old gearboxes.
    • Hi all   what short shifter do you use on your skykine r34?   my synchronous does have a problem and i was getting huge delay and grinding sound between 2nd and 3rd, did put shockproof red heavy stuff and it is great now/ no issues   would in your view short shifter screw this up?   people seems to suggest/ use cube short shifter and there is standard and premium. Seen review of premium as much better and less play. Thoughts?
    • Yeah, there's a bit of a density and friability difference between pebbles and any of those other things. Silicone will definitely float in oil and so will be mobile enough to move around. Although, again, if it is upstream of the filter it really shouldn't go any further. I would only ever worry about silicone when it is in places downstream of the filter. Upstream of the pickup is a whole 'nother matter. We've all seen what that does. I have seen the most abominable crap settled out in industrial gearboxes, trunnion lube systems and the like, without any sign that any of it has touched anything in the machine. Just chilling in the bottom, waiting for the inevitable operator error that causes the whole machine to need to be dismantled for repairs.
