Hey guys,

Have a R34 Coupe here, just wanting to know a few things,

I was planning of getting some 18" CR Kai's and lowering the car a bit (not too much as I have a fairly steep driveway), but I am pretty new to the car scene, so am still a total car newb.

So I'm not sure what I should be looking for, I have read around the forums and have obtained quite a bit of knowledge, but thought I should just ask.

I was thinking of getting these Coilovers and these Springs for lowering the car, I'm not sure if I need the springs, I read if you want to lower your car, either get Coilovers, Coilovers + Springs or don't do it at all?

As for the spring rates I was reading this thread and some say 8/6 is a bit harsh for street use, this car will never see the track, it's a daily car and it's an NA anyway , will it be ok?

Lastly, I'm still not too sure on wheel size (Width, offsets, etc), I did read this sticky and it has helped a lot, but I'm still not sure about the 8.5, 9J, 9JJ etc, when on the site and actually buying them :S

I'm just looking for a set that will sit flush with the guards and doesn't require any or much rolling at all.

Thanks in advance

You either go coilovers OR lowering springs.

I would highly recommend getting coilovers, i have some in my r31 and they are an awesome improvement. The car handles alot better and you have control over ride hight and shock stiffness. Before coilovers i had cut springs which is pretty much the same as lowering springs but not as good.

I bought my coilovers from this site: www.justjap.com and i'm pretty sure you get warrenty this way.

Hope this Helps

And welcome to the Skyline Scene.

:thanks:, that saves me a good 3-400 dollars down the road.

So the stock springs are upto the job, if I get the car lowered?

I just don't understand as the lowered springs are defiantly shorter (Duh) than the stock springs, if I was to lower the car with a Coilover change, wouldn't it mean the is more tension on the longer stock springs, if that made sense?

:S

When you have coilovers you are replacing the standard springs with new ones which are part of the coilover, the height adjustment is made by adjusting the height of where the spring sits.

Coilovers are the way to go for sure. Do not waste your time with lowering springs as you will never get the ride height the same from side to side. I had major issues with my hr31 getting the ride height ok and even then is was shit with lowering springs.

As for wheel specs it all depends on how much you wanna spend, most cheaper wheels only have certain offsets and widths available. On a r34 you should be able to go a 9 +30 all round easy.

Ohhhhh, haha, now i feel like an idiot /facepalm.

I will get the Coilovers instead then

Was looking to spend about 3Kish max on the wheels, with that, would I be able to get the right offsets and widths to make it sit flush the guards on the R34?

Yea easy for that cash.

Another option would be xd9's, they look better imo and are cheaper.

Try hawthorn tyre power as they do good prices on work wheels.

Also keep a look out on importmonster as they always have really nice 2nd hand wheels coming in, could save yourself a fair bit buying 2nd hand.

Awesome, thanks for the help :D

I'll have a look at the XD9's, what are some well known places to get wheels online?

I have had a look on JDMConcept and Nengun, I was thinking of buying the wheels from there.

These fitments look like a flush fit with the R34, not sure if he had the guards rolled though.

Front: 18 x 9.0 +30 / Rear: 18 x 9.0 +30

EDIT: Should I get slightly wider rear wheels?

I know it won't matter to my 25GT, but will it offer more traction for later if I decide to upgrade the car or help with resale value?

Would anyone be able to shed some light on what the J's mean on some site, ie, 9J, 9JJ, etc.

Thanks

JDM concept are meant to be good, but they seem to be a bit more expensive them some other places.

Those look like r34 gtr wheels in your link.

You should be able to go wider on the rear with a 34, 9 +30 sounds perfect for the front though. A guy that works near me has cr kai's on his 34, look like 9.5 or 10's on the rear and they fit pro.

http://www.jdmconcept.com.au/index.php?option=com_jdm&p=detail&cid=34

18 X 8.5 - $500 per wheel [5-100, 5-114.3 +30, +32, +37, +38, +43]

18 X 9.5 - $520 per wheel [5-100, 5-114.3 +12, +20, +30, +38]

8.5 +30 and 9.5 +20 or +30 should sit flush.

Awesome, perfect, thanks heaps for your help. :worship:

I'll do some more research before I bite the bullet.

Was having a look on Just Jap for the Coilovers and they have a few more choices then expected ,

What one would I be looking at for the standard 25GT Coupe?

don't hit yourself too hard. your new to the scene and it takes a while to learn even the basics. i bought the bc coilovers. they have four types. the inverted and also the external resivoir ones would be over kill for a street car, which leaves you with the two cheapest options. the cheaper one is good enough but for an extra $100 you can get the next set up which is more robust and stronger. i'll try find a link for the ones i'm talking about.

The BR type is what i recommend.

cheers.

Hey,

Thanks for the kind words ,

Turns out the link decided not to work, but there are 2 types from the BR series that fit the GT/GT-T

BC Racing Coilover Suspension Kit - Nissan Skyline ER34 GT & GT-T (4WS) (Out of stock)

BR Type RS Series - 30 Level Damper Adjustable - Free Australia-Wide Delivery! (Fork Type)

- Nissan Skyline R34 GT & GT-T (4WS)

- Hicas Equipped

- Fork Type Rear Lower Suspension Mounting

BC Racing Coilover Suspension Kit - Nissan Skyline ER34/ENR34 2WS (Rear Eyelet Type)

BR Type RS Series - 30 Level Damper Adjustable - Free Australia-Wide Delivery!

- Nissan Skyline R34 GT & GTT (2WS)

- Non-Hicas Models

- Eyelet Type Rear Lower Suspension Mounting

I'm pretty sure mine has the HICAS, does the (4WS) stand for 4 Wheel System, mine isn't the 4WD version, but then the (2WS) says it's for Non-HICAS models.

Cheers

Ok, since the first one is out of stock and I'm pretty sure it's for the 4WD versions, what's confusing me now is the Non- HICAS on the second model.

EDIT: Was there even a model without HICAS?

Edited by Converge

Not sure on which you need. If you give the blokes a call at Just Jap they will let you know exactly what will suit your car. They're pretty good blokes in my experience with them. Also anything over about $300 is free delivery from memory.

Just sent them an email, will see if they're open tomorrow and give them a call.

4WS = 4 Wheel Steer (HICAS)

2WS = 2 Wheel Steer (non HICAS)

not sure what model came without HICAS... Maybe the 4door N/A

Ahh, thanks for that, so the second one probably won't fit, that's majorly confusing then, that means that none of the BR series will fit...guess I'll have to wait for a reply from them or give them a call :glare:

EDIT: Found this,

Please specify below whether your application is 4WS hicas equipped with -

  • fork type lower mount rear strut
  • Eyelet type lower mount rear strut

If that helps anyone??

Edited by Converge

Ah no reply from them and woke up too late (They close at 1)

But I did manage to find this last night,

R34 GT (2 Door) = Eye Eye

R34 GT (4 Door) = Eye Eye

R34 GT-t (2-Door) = Eye Fork

R34 GT-t (4-Door) = Eye Fork

R34GTS4 (2 door) = Eye Eye

R34GTS4 (4 door) = Eye Eye

R34GTR (2 door) = Eye Fork

So looks like I need the eyelet type, also read that R33 GTS-T will fit in the 25GT no problems.

Also found this,

if you have hicas rear end (4 wheel steering ) http://justjap.com/s...196&cat=&page=1 the only difference is the rear coilovers on (4ws) have a fork mount (like an upside down U)

for non hicas rear (only steering from front ) http://justjap.com/s...866&cat=&page=1 these hace an eyelet on the rear coilovers like the front

have a look under your car ans see what u have at the rear !

hope this helps ya !!

I'm pretty sure my car has the HICAS, but the rear mount is definitely an eyelet....

Edited by Converge

easy to see if its got HICAS, just look at the back to see if theres a motor with tie rods mounted behind the diff, You should have a HICAS light on your dash but? That doesnt mean it hasnt been pulled out due to an issue or something, best to double check the motor is mounted behind the diff that way you will know for sure

:thanks:

I'll post a pic up tonight after work to confirm, but I'm pretty certain it's there.

Seeing as you own a GTS-T would you be able to tell me if the rear coilovers are Fork or Eyelet type mounts?

Edited by Converge

Marks 2 cents.

Bilstien shocks with lowered king springs, around $1500 for a set if I recall, better than cheap spec coilovers which are to hard for the street, my car handles better on the street and on the track now compared to my old multi adjustable G4 coilovers.

Thow in a HICAS lock bar, some good brake pads and tyres and your on your way.

Rims size would be to suit the best rubber you can afford, and if you dont have too aggressive camber they should last a while.

    • Ah, fair enough. For the IAT, I'm using a legit GM sensor that was used on the car prior to my current build. I'll get another wideband and IAT ordered and follow up when they show up. Thanks for the help.
    • You shouldn't need to massively fatten up the mixtures for cold conditions. For one thing - 0°C is not that cold. For another, the Haltech will be using the IAT sensor to tell it how dense the air air, and calculate the correct amount of fuelling. Then the cold start enrichment is added as a % on top of that, so it should scale with the main fuelling. You might also doubt the IAT sensor at this time. You're not using one from an RB26 are you? Using a nice Bosch sensor or similar? Happens. Some wideband units take great pleasure in killing their sensors. Put another wideband in the tailpipe and compare. Or just swap the sensor to a brand new one and see.
    • Oh, my misunderstand. When the car was running, it sounded ok, but if I gave it any gas it wanted to die but caught itself afterwards. It's very different from how it was a couple months ago when it was warmer outside. The logs show that the AFRs are better during, what I assume, is warmup enrichment. Because it's cold, and air is more dense, should I work on the enrichment bit?
    • yess of course im not using 2nd hand parts from my spare engine, but the place where i live is hard to find parts for the RB20DET ,but for the RB20E is everywhere including new ones and a lot cheaper ,because for the RB20DET you have to order it overseas to get one and it cost a lot of money 3x the price to be exact. so i ask this topic because if i can use the new ones but for RB20E is it compatible or not. if not im screwed haha, not totally screwed but i have to save a lot of money first before i can begin repairing my engine, thanks for the information before.
    • Unless my sensor just died, was only a couple months old, I strongly believe it didn't. How can I test it? I never mentioned it being 20:1+?
