Hey!

Firstly, a lot has changed on this forum! I haven't been here in over a year.

Okay straight to the point, I'm actually selling my skyline and looking to buy a 350z. The one i am looking at is all stock. I'll show you a picture of it's interior/dash so you know what i've got to work with, then please read the text underneath the picture since i'll be explaining what i'm confused in regards to doing.

Okay as you can see, theres a 6 cd stacker stock CD player, then above that is basically just a glove box. There is nothing inside it. Now i've seen some pretty cool stuff done in those areas, refer to the two pictures below for an understanding of what i mean. I know that there are some very creative people in here, and i know nothing about GPS systems, in car PC's, all that sort of stuff. So what i'm asking, is what you think should go in those areas? The advantages of each. For example maybe an alpine media system/headunit in where the 6 CD stacker is, then have a GPS in the glove box section. I think it'd be cool to be able to flip open that lid and find something such as a gps screen under there. But then i've seen people do stuff like integrate a PC into that glove box area, which has a gps and everything else in it. Now i have no idea how one does that, but if you could give me some ideas on what i could do there, and possibly point me in the direction of someone who could do it for me in Brisbane Australia? I remember there used to be a guy on this forum who worked on those screens that the R34's have, so i'm not sure if he's still around, but maybe he could help me.

Thanks!

EDIT: OMFG what is going on with this forum now? Nothing seems to be working for me, pictures etc. Sorry i'll try to figure this out.

you mean christine rogers? :P

she knows heaps more than us mortal guys

wow I must have missed the memo on the sex change, either that or your voice was really deep last time we talked christine..lol :whistling:

you can do a lot of different things with the current screens or ditch it and put in a better one. but it can get expensive if you can't do the work yourself

Thanks for the replies, firstly i got to say your R34 looks amazing Terry!

I might be referring to Christine Rogers, i really don't remember, it's been about 2 years since i was last active on this site! hahah

Theres some stuff i probably can do myself, well i got friends who are panel beaters, friends who are mechanics etc so I'm sure they can help me. But theres a possibility they can't help with everything, and for that i'd pay someone to do it for me. But at the moment i'm really needing ideas. Like for example, a headunit with an inbuilt gps/touch screen dvd player VS a touch screen dvd player with a SEPERATE GPS. Like theres 2 spots obviously that i can put things. If i can have some sort of PC in the top dash that does everything and i can leave the rest stock, then that'd be great, but otherwise i'm really in a pickle about what to do. To put things simply, i know nothing about anything, so telling me anything helps.

If you think for example headunits with in built GPS's aren't efficient, then say so, that way i can buy the two seperate. That sort of thing. But if there is someone who knows a lot, such as that Christine Rogers, then tell me what YOU would do in my situation, since whatever you would do is probably far better than the best thing i can come up with!

You could always look at getting a tablet instead of a carpc.

You can get the android based ones fairly cheap, and alot have built in fm radio and gps.

Thanks for the idea, but that looks horrible in my opinion!

Plus it's not exactly 'user friendly' while driving a car.

I'd prefer an in car PC with a touch screen, i saw one on youtube that looked really cool. Is there someone on this forum that might be able to help me with this? I might send Christine Rogers a PM. Or i might try to find somewhere that does custom installs who will give me ideas.

its chris rogers , not christine...lol we just like to tease him

he can do up something for you or ditch it and do a ipad.

car pc is to much work , Ipads can do it all now built in. and can be removable too. seach youtube for soundman, or david fishman, they can show you ipad installs

I have dumped the nissan gear and done mine with the things your asking, but if I had to do it now, IPAD or similar. is the way to go.

my 3gs iphone is being dumped into my car soon for a game console. etc. in june Iphone 5 come out, if no delays

I have the panels to do that in a 350 Z and yes I'm still around. if you have bought the car - drop past or call me.

see sig.

troy, haha.

terry - wait till SAU nats - I'll get you back then :P

Hahah, thanks for making me look like an idiot then! I thought the name 'Christine' didn't seem right, sorry Chris!

I think ipads look ugly honestly :(. I've seem them installed in peoples car and i think it looks gross! Also a lot of the dash has to be cut to fit in it, preferrably i want the least amount of dash cut, i want it to appear perfectly stock.

Thanks Chris, i'll check out your website now and I'll definately drop by when i get the 350z, i wouldn't be surprised if i have it in two - three weeks from now.

What's your take on Car PC's? What is your preferred audio setup?

the navi Z panels I keep elsewhere. they are not on my site. I have a second wholesale biz I sell them through. (that does not have a website.)

let me know when you are ready. integration wont be an issue.

as for setup - matter of opinion. car pc via radio is my preferred use. still a bitch to get 100% correct though.

Aah okay, I'm a bit of an idiot when it comes to cars and anything related to it. I just pick cars that look good basically. So the 'Navi Z panels', what panels are they? I noticed on your website it said you try to keep things looking stock, which is exactly what i want. That's why preferably i'd want the car PC in that little glove box bit above the cd player in the 350z, since that way i can have it hidden behind that little flap thing that comes down, so that no one knows it's there.

The car pc via radio, does that mean the factory 6 stacker CD player in the 350z can stay there and can play through the PC?

The PC's have navigation in them right? If so, how do they work? Like how do they connect to the internet for maps/your location? And are they just as good as any other GPS?

What sort of parts do they need? The screen obviously, then some sort of little tower/processor (whatever they are called), i imagine, is there anything else?

What makes it hard to get 100% correct? I've heard a fair few times that if it's not done correctly, it's not worth it.

And finally, could you give me a rough estimate on the price i'd be looking at? Even if you just want to tell me over a PM or something, i'm aware it's not going to be cheap at all.

Sorry if i've kind've overloaded you with questions, just wanted a bit of a foundation of knowledge to help me research further so i can ask you more direct questions when i come see you about it and so then i can let you know exactly what i'm after as well. I definately will be buying a 350z, i'm just waiting for my skyline to sell since i don't have room for two cars at my house.

we need to talk - easier :)

put simply though anything is possible with time and $$. I have access to a lot of things that most others don't. that includes odd panels. I do a fair bit of business with japan and can land damn near anything OEM.

price: suggest you work out what you want from a house PC and double it in cost.

Thanks! I'm quite sure that price would be within my budget then, so I'll definately contact you when I get my 350z! :)

    • Actually, that's not entirely true. It's also the same motor in the 1st gen Nissan Cube but they're rare as hen's teeth.
    • Yeah it is always worth testing and balancing actuators out of the box, just set the pressure regulator on a compressor very low (eg 5 psi) and increase it slowly to see when they both move.....unfortunately while you may be able to adjust the length of the actuator rod to minimise any difference, the actual pressure they move from is not adjustable so you need a well matched pair. And yes, the VCAM is probably contributing; the earlier in the rev range they come on boost and the slower the revs build (I think your demo was in 5th), the more you notice it.  Driving at WOT through 1st, 2nd, 3rd etc you will probably never hear it as any shuffling starts and is over super quickly
    • oh they were with that motor, you need to remove the engine to change the spark plugs (don't have to, but it does make it easier)
    • I certainly fall into the annoyed camp, but glad to hear that if it's happening at low boost then I'm not likely going to blow a turbo and end up with metal shards in my oil. Just feels like it prevents me from really driving it without hesitation and "peak" performance. Wonder if it's the VCAM, it did an impressive job of shifting the torque curve and faster spool, but maybe now it's "too fast" and there's too much air for how open the throttle is.  Based on some other threads, will also do some reading on synchronizing the actuators. They are the default actuators that come on the Garrett's and I would think they would be set the same coming from the factory, but if the turbos don't actually work exactly the same way at the same time as previously mentioned, it would be worth making sure the actuators are actuating together properly
    • I went down this rabbit hole before, ended up sourcing a motor from the UK (I'm in Japan) which also didn't function correctly. With the original motor, I disassembled it and reassembled it and it works somewhat, sometimes. What I could deduce from all my screwing around is that there is calibration of the gears on the inside of the motor and two ramps on the main gear which activate switches that operate the motor and move the sunroof either to retract into the roof or tilt. Where I got stuck was that, it seemed in my case that one or both of the switches that are activated by the ramp on the gear did not always activate and thus the motor did not move, causing it to sometimes not retract or tilt (apologies, I've forgotten which way it didn't work.).  Of course this part is discontinued at Nissan now, it's the same part in the S15 but no other models. I also contacted the manufacturer of the component for schematics - forgot the name, they're based in Gifu - but they declined to share the information due to being bound by an NDA, sadly. Looking through my pictures now, it seems I last had a crack at this in 2022. See, I so kindly wrote "open" and "close" next to the switches. If you figure it out, please do tell me. Those little switches, with the red buttons may need to be replaced.
